Humphrey Fellows Participate in the 2019 Global Leadership Forum
 

Humphrey Fellows from all 13 host campuses converged in Washington D.C. to participate in the 2019 Global Leadership Forum. Fellows engaged with distinguished speakers including Professor Arnold Offner, a historian on the life of Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, and Dean Laura Bloomberg, dean of the Humphrey School of Public Policy at the University of Minnesota. In addition to insightful discussions, skill-building workshops, and connecting with peers, Fellows participated in the first-of-its-kind Professional Affiliation Fair, where they had the opportunity to meet and network with Professional Affiliation hosts from around Washington D.C. Fellows also attended a Diplomatic Reception at the U.S. Department of State, where attendees included members of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, representatives from the Diplomatic Corp, and other distinguished guests. Remarks were provided by Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Caroline Casagrande; and President of the Institute of International Education, Allan Goodman.

The final day of the Forum took place at the U.S. Department of State, where Fellows showcased their research and work at a poster fair, engaged with regional bureau representatives, and attended a plenary discussion with State Department officials including Matthew Lussenhop, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; Jon Piechowski, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs; and Walter Douglas, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Public Affairs Public Diplomacy, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. 

Humphrey Fellow Presents at Harvard Conference

Humphrey Fellow Marco Konopacki from Syracuse University presented his research about misinformation and disinformation in a youth context in Brazil at the Comparative Approaches to Disinformation Workshop at Harvard University. He focused on how Brazilian youth are dealing with, fighting against, and developing tools to counter disinformation. During the conference, Mr. Konopacki spoke about a project he has worked on with other Brazilian Fellows through the The Hablatam Project, a nonprofit organization focusing on digital policy and technological tools for youth. Mr. Konopacki also presented a poster at the Global Leadership Forum Poster Fair at the U.S. Department of State on the same topic.

Humphrey Alumnus Receives Award from President of Tajikistan
 

Humphrey Alumnus Daler Jumaev received the Medal of Meritorious Services (Khizmat Sharif) from the president of Tajikistan for his work on improving energy access in the Gorno‐Badakhshan Autonomous region. As the head of Pamir Energy for the past 10 years, Mr. Jumaev has worked to increase energy supply in winter, repair and reconstruct hydroelectric plants, and add high voltage power lines around Tajikistan. He also started the Pamir Energy Network, which is laying the groundwork for a country-wide system of connected electricity. This network has already provided energy to 96% of the population of the Gorno‐Badakhshan Autonomous region. During his medal ceremony, the president of Tajikistan expressed his satisfaction with Mr. Jumaev’s successes, and discussed possibilities for future projects. The Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Usmonali Usmonzoda, also expressed gratitude to the company staff for their service. Mr. Jumaev was a 2005-2006 Humphrey Fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Humphrey Alumna Presents at Environmental Conferences
 

Humphrey Alumna Angelina Davydova has promoted U.S. – Russian partnerships in environmental science since completing her Humphrey year at UC Davis earlier this year. Over the last several months, she has invited American colleagues with whom she engaged during her Fellowship to present at several environmental policy events in Russia. Additionally, Ms. Davydova presented at events in the U.S. to encourage these bilateral partnerships. In early July, she invited a colleague from the San Francisco Department of the Environment to speak at the Moscow Urban Forum. In September, she invited several American experts to speak at Moscow’s Third City Climate Forum. In October, Ms. Davydova presented at the Fort Ross Dialogue, in California, where she discussed U.S. – Russian environmental cooperation and encouraged this collaboration across disciplines to address problems. Ms. Davydova has also been featured in several media outlets to promote environmental policies across the U.S. and Russia.
