Wall Street meets the Sons of Anarchy in Hard Rules, the smoldering, scorching first novel in the explosively sexy new Dirty Money series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.

How bad do you want it?

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family’s business dealings legitimate. His reckless and ruthless brother, Derek wants to keep Brandon Enterprises cemented in lies, deceit, and corruption. But the harder Shane fights to pull the company back into the light, the darker he has to become. Then he meets Emily Stevens, a woman who not only stirs a voracious sexual need in him, but becomes the only thing anchoring him between good and evil.

Emily is consumed by Shane, pushed sexually in ways she never dreamed of, falling deeper into the all-encompassing passion that is this man. She trusts him. He trusts her, but therein lies the danger. Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret could destroy them both.

This is book ONE of FOUR in Shane and Emily's story.

★★★★★! Hard Rules, book 1 of 4. Unlikely steamy romance caught up in a power struggle over a fortune. Or is it just another player’s move in the game?!

Books in Dirty Money series should be read in order:
Book 1: Hard Rules
Book 2: Damage Control
Book 3: Bad Deeds
Book 4: End Game

Hard Rules (book 1) is the opening to a family saga. A struggle between right and wrong; good and evil in a fight over an empire, a legacy and a fortune.

A deathly ill father, a meddling mother, one good brother and one who seems to have fallen from grace. But this is only scratching the surface and as the layers are peeled four formidable, complex players emerge.

Attorney and heir Shane Brandon aka the good son does not have time to romance, but the more he tries to resist the stunning beauty he keeps encountering the more he needs to get her out of his system.

Emily Stevens on the run from something to unfold with story never planned on getting mixed up with a Shane nor a fight over a fortune, but her carnal attraction to the good brother has made her the perfect plaything in their game…

Nine words to describe Shane Brandon: Noble, perceptive, loyal, dutiful, dominating, powerful, conflicted, enigmatic and private.

Nine words to describe Emily Stevens: Secretive, loyal, cautious, naive, smart, perceptive, confused, vulnerable and desperate.

Hard Rules, told from dual POVs is the opening to a whirlwind romance with hot sex and a power game riddled with greed, deception, lies, danger & manipulation. It ends with a shocker leading right to book 2, Damage Control for the continuation of their saga!

Spectacular plot! Spell-binding story-telling! Supreme cast! Sky-rocketing sex!

***I received an ARC from the publisher, through Netgalley.com, in exchange for honest feedback.***

I love organized crime/Mafia themes and have loved some of this author's other works. When I saw that she had a new book out, it was a no-brainier for me...or so I thought. Unfortunately, while 'Hard Rules' was a decent read, it failed to wow me. I wanted to love this one so badly, but I couldn't force it.

The primary problem that I had with this book is that it was incredibly slow-moving. I understand that as the first book in the series the focus was on laying the groundwork for events that will transpire in future books. In this case, the result was a pretty uneventful, and even boring, book.

The entire storyline just felt so flat to me. Not once, did my pulse quicken or was I left dying to know what would happen next. It was lacking the suspense and anticipation that this author is known for building. At the most, I felt a very mild curiosity about where the story would lead.

While the love story between Shane and Emily was okay, that's just the problem. It was "okay" and nothing more. There was a lot of flirtatious dramatics, but very little action. Although they supposedly had a deep connection, I was not convinced.

I'm still trying to decide if I will continue this series. As a fan of this author, I'm hopeful that this book is just paving the way for something spectacular down the road. If nothing else, I am curious about Emily's past and whatever she's running from. That might be reason enough for me to pick up the next book.

➦This is book one of the Dirty Money series by Lisa Renee Jones. This novel revolves around the struggle for control, money and power. Shane, a badass lawyer from NY City, learns about his father's terminal illness and moves back to his home town to gain control of the family's empire. But his job will not be easy - he has to fight his brother for control of the Brandon Enterprises while at the same time maintaining relationships with his backstabbing family members. Who can he trust?

Emily is new in town and she has been running from her old life. She meets Shane by chance and ends up having a one night stand with him. They both feel the deeper connection but she runs, unwilling to complicate his (or her) life. Imagine her and his surprise when she accepts a new job as Mr. Brandon Sr's assistant. So who's side is Emily on?

❤I loved the first part of the book completely. I was immersed in the development of Shane and Emily's relationship. Some scenes were super hot and the first part of the book certainly did not lack in the steam department.

✘It was apparent from the start that Emily has a big secret. She is running from something or someone, she is super paranoid, has 2 phones. She is constantly battling her conscience about being with Shane and hurting him by being with him. By about 60% in everything felt dragging for me. It was just too repetitive , I lost count at how many times Emily insinuated that she has a big secret and that Shane wouldn't want to be with her if he found out.

✘The whole back and forth by 80% got annoying and I was thoroughly exhausted. He wants to fire her to protect her, she wants to protect him while knowing she's bad for him. And in the middle of all that there is talk about cartel and some stuff I stopped paying much attention to because I kind of no longer cared. Somewhere along the way I was lost.

➦To sum it up, I liked the book, primarily the first half. I rarely read more than one book about one couple, there has to be something to really hook me to the series. Sadly, I don't' think I will be continuing with this series. This is just my opinion, a lot of people seemed to have enjoyed the book very much and I encourage you to read it to find out for yourself. :)

LRJ has got me completely hooked on this series. I was enthralled by Emily and Shane. They have excellent chemistry that connects them beyond the physical. They started out pretty hot and heavy (much to our delight). They then end up crossing paths in another way. Shane has quite the drama unfolding amongst his family with his dad near death. They do things that may surprise you. With family like that, who needs enemies!? Emily has secrets and, sorry ladies and gents, we don't quite yet know what they are. There is obviously much more to this story and we must read on to get the deets. The writing is excellent. The plot interesting. The characters and development unique and dynamic. I am enthusiastically waiting for the next book in the series. This series debut just reaffirmed why LRJ is and will continue to be an auto-read author for me.

As a highly successful corporate attorney, and potential heir to the family empire, Shane Brandon is a man who wields much power. Displaying little to no weakness, he exudes control and confidence in all things. Intent on protecting his family’s business becoming enslaved by corruption, he reluctantly inserts himself back into the fold of Brandon Enterprises.

The only chink in his amour is his mislaid loyalty to his wayward family. A chink they are readily willing to exploit. However failure is not an option and in order to succeed, Brandon must employ callous tactics that at times cut too close to the bone. It's a murky world where extortion and blackmail are daily occurrences. A world where his unexpected ray of light Emily does not belong.

Lisa creates much intrigue with Emily's character. From the outset we are aware there is more than meets the eye. There is a fragility to Emily's character, which I found difficult to not become endeared to. Her past is unclear but her future involves the exposure of information that may aid the destruction of Shane's plans. Shane describes her as: “My light in the storm of betrayal,” and I'll be interested to see what will happened when the light goes out.

Hard Rules is a sleek and sexy read. Lisa Renee Jones sets about creating a seductive display of sex, power and deceit, in a world where the lines of good and evil are so easily blurred. It’s a novel which managed to ensnare me with it's synopsis and kept my attention captured until it’s very last page. With many pieces in play, it'll be interesting to see who the winners and losers will be.

Title: Hard Rules
Series: Dirty Money #1
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Release date: August 9, 2016
Cliffhanger: Yes
HEA

The Dirty Money series has snagged my full attention with its first powerful installment Hard Rules. There was conniving and back stabbing around every corner and I never fully knew who was trustworthy, if anyone. I felt like I was constantly being forced to decipher every word, action, and nuance of the story in an effort to keep my head above water as to where the plot was unfolding. Every character was a piece on a chess board being moved around strategically by the author and the only question was who would finally be the victor?

The war that Shane Brandon is waging against his family is a war that he's determined to win. and finally wash their empire clean of the filth that has tarnished it. Lack of morals, greed, and power struggles are characteristics that I would attribute to the environment that he's become trapped in.

After returning to Detroit to save his shady family from serious legal trouble, he knows his job isn't done, no matter how hard he wants it to be true. As much as he wishes he could return back to New York and his ideal life as a corporate lawyer, his inability to give up on his family holds him strong. His father is seriously ill, and he's not willing to allow himself the freedom of turning his back on everything.

Shane's not afraid of a monumental fight, but he is feeling weary of the daily power struggle. When he runs into Emily in a coffee shop, he's immediately attracted to her refreshingly sweet nature. What is first supposed to be a passionate one-night stand quickly flares and burns out of control. Neither was expecting to see each other again, neither expected to care. But they were wrong on both counts.

"You rock my world and I don't get rocked. I'm damn sure going to do my best to make you do this my way."
"Which is what?"
"You stay with me." I lower my mouth a breath from hers. "Stay."

Emily is on the run, hiding her true identity and with every day, we see her indecision grow over whether or not she should continue to selfishly potentially lay a whole new set of problems on Shane. Knowing she may be a serious danger to those around her if her house of cards come tumbling down is consuming her with guilt. On the other hand, Shane is making her feel more understood and connected to another person more than any other time in her life. She may not reveal much to him, but he's a shrewd man and sees the truth in her eyes. They're more alike than either could have anticipated.

We are one in this moment, two people lost and found in each other, both of us fighting a battle the other understands in ways no one else can.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between these two. She was a great heroine who knew how push back when his control started to reach too far out of the bedroom. Working in close proximity, she's able to hold her own amongst the deceit and hidden agendas.

And though he had his moments of arrogance and pushiness, it all came from a place of protection. They both had secrets and were surrounded by lies, but with each other were able to find a safe oasis from the mind games they both had to play.

Hard Rules was a very promising start to the series. I felt like I was tossed around in a pool of sharks on the hunt for blood. There was quite a cliffhanger at the end, but with a four book series, I'm sure most people will be expecting that. I know even without the suspense and uncertainty of what's to come, I would still be on board with continuing with the next book.

*Damage Control is scheduled for release in February of next year.

Hard Rules is intriguing, sexy and dangerous with a swoon worthy sexy hero. It focuses on a family empire with their legitimate company, drugs and morality at the centre of play. There are good people and bad people, secrets and lies all wrapped in an interesting story that has only just started to unfold on the pages of HARD RULES, the first in the SEXY four-part DIRTY MONEY series.

Shane Brandon and Emily Stevens are the leading characters with an undeniable sexual attraction and the couple readers will root for. He’s charismatic and sexy, the good guy in his family who readers will, not be able to help, but fall in love with. Emily becomes his light but trust maybe an issue as their relationship develops and more and more is revealed, both to reader and the characters at the centre of the drama.

The characters and bones of the story are brilliant but the back and forth of certain elements, among another couple of issues took away a little from my overall enjoyment. For my personal tastes the story had a tendency to detail elements that I didn’t feel were necessary and simply elongated the story and caused my mind to wander and disengage with the characters. Having said that Hard Rules is my first story by this author and I appreciated the quality of the writing when it was on point for my reading tastes. I expected an interwoven story full of suspense and twists, intrigue and erotic passion and that was fulfilled. I'm certainly intrigued by how the story ends and curious for more. If you enjoy erotic suspense with romance and a swoony hero, then this may be a story for you!

Note: HARD RULES is the first part of the four book Dirty Money Series

Suspenseful, thrilling and deliciously sexy.
"It's time for some rules?"
"Rules? What rules?"
"Hard rules. And hard rule number one is, no more lies."

Power and money are the main fuel that moves the Brandon family. Unlike the rest though, Shane only wants it by his own merit and if it’s attained legitimately. Something he was well on his way to achieve as a successful lawyer in NY. Far away from the current tangle of fraud and corruption his family’s empire is in. But having his heartless father nearing certain death due to illness or his mother suffer the consequences of illegal company dealing, he’ll do just about anything to prevent his family’s legacy crumble, even step into a dangerously gray area to fight his merciless brother.
"Blood divides as easily as it unites, especially when money and power are involved".

And in the midst of his storm of lies and betrayal he meets the mysterious Emily Stevens, a woman who not only piques his sensual interest but also brings light into what seems to be his inevitable path to darkness. A woman who’s past he doesn’t know and could destroy them both. Because Emily has secrets of her own. She’s running and trying to avoid any entanglements that might get caught in the crosshairs of her problems, but she can’t escape the very intense, alpha who’s his sight on her.
"She's my light in the storm of betrayal."

I just love complex and well developed characters. Even when we don’t get a lot of details from Emily’s past be we do get to know her through Shane’s keen sense of observation and her own actions. She’s sweet yet strong, a perfect counterpart for Shane. She is the sweet mocha to his no nonsense triple shot latte.
“I drink my coffee the way I see the world. Hash and brutal. And I drink my booze with a smooth kick, the way I try and face my adversaries.”

Opposite to Emily’s scarce background details, we do get a lot regarding the domineering, dutiful and cunning Shane Brandon and his family which seems completely beyond repair or redemption. I half wanted him to leave Denver with Emily in tow. I felt for him and the lack of trust and love from the people who should love and support him the most. So I really want him and Emily to work out.
“I see it in your eyes.”
“Back to my eyes,”
I say.
“Yes. Back to your eyes.”
“Stop looking.”
“I can’t.”

Those two words sizzle, matching the heat in his eyes…

The chemistry between Shane and Emily was sizzling throughout the story, and the more they got to know each other the more intense their connection got. But the fact that they wanted to protect the other from each other’s difficult lives, made them push as much as they pulled which created a whole lot of drama.
“She’s a drug I could easily call an addiction when I don’t have addictions, and at a time I’d be nothing but poison to her. That’s a problem for her and me.”

Even though Shane and Emily have a serious case of insta-lust right from the get go, the story itself took a while for me to get into. But as it progresses, the plot thickens with mystery and intrigue I got really hooked.

All secondary characters were as well developed as the main ones. From Shane’s cunning mother to his wonderfully awesome assistant Jessica. All of whom added a great layer to the story.

Hard Rules is book #1 in the Dirty Money series by Lisa Renee Jones. It is a contemporary romance hailed as “explosively sexy Wall Street meets Sons of Anarchy” and I would have to agree. Lisa Renee Jones crafts a strikingly rousing and sexy opening story wrapped up in danger, deceptions and secrets. The book is told from both points of view and ends with an OMG I want the next book cliffhanger. I can't wait to know Emily's secret and how Shane will deal with it and his completely dysfunctional family.

'Hard Rules' by Lisa Renee Jones is book one in the "Dirty Money" series. This is the story of Shane Brandon and Emily Stevens. This book does end with a cliffhanger that set you for their continued story in the next book.
Emily is hiding and keeping a secret as she try to start a new life and forgo her past when she meets Shane. They happen to meet when she grabs his coffee by mistake. Shane and her are both attracted to each other but Emily runs off before Shane can get her name and information. Later in that day they run into each other again and this time Shane isn't letting her get away so easily.
Shane and Emily agree to have a one night stand in which they both keep their secrets but just enjoy each other. Shane too is going through some things that he doesn't want to share. They just want to get a break from their problems but can one night be enough? Can they keep from learning what the other is hiding?
Another great book by Ms. Jones!

3.5 stars!

Successful NY corporate lawyer Shane Brandon has achieved everything he did by his own merits, without staining his conscience and morality. Such cannot be said about his family. A heartless, dying father, a conniving, corrupt brother, and a mother scared of the possible consequences made by both the dying father and the corrupt brother pull Shane back to Denver to try to pull his family's company from total ruin.

In the midst of his mission to fix Brandon Enterprises, he bumps into the enigmatic Emily Stevens, and the instant pull is there. They were given a night to escape their problems, escape real life, but they both realize that a night isn't enough. Especially for Shane.

The connection between Emily and Shane exceeds the physical pull. The two seem attuned to each other's feelings and inner thoughts, even in their first meeting and night.

Shane is every bit of an alpha—strong, powerful, unwavering. What he wants, he will do everything in his power to get. Despite that, he is a good man. He knows the difference between good and bad, and he's doing his best to stop his family's legacy to crumble because of his father and brother's shady transactions and management skills.

While we are exposed to the history of Shane's family, Emily's remains in the dark. She has an air of naivety and innocence, but there is that unmistakable aura the opposite of it. Emily has gone through things an innocent could never even imagine. All we know is she's escaping from something. She's an interesting character, but I didn't particularly enjoy how undecided she was. One moment, she's pushing Shane away, the next she's angry at him for actually respecting her decision.

In this story, it was hard to see who was on Shane's side; who was good, who was bad. It made me consume the pages of this book in one sitting. I wanted to know the truth! I enjoyed the mystery, intrigue, and steam in this novel, and it killed me that this book ended on a cliffhanger! I can't wait to get my hands on the next books in this series as I would really like to see how things go for Shane and Emily and everything in between.

Lisa Renee Jones can deliver suspense and a cliffhanger like no other. When I get to the end of her books I am always left begging for more. Hard Rules is no exception. This is the first book in the series and gives a lot of background information so that you can have a solid foundation going forward.

Shane Brandon is a good guy in a bad family. When we meet him he has just moved back to Denver to take over this family’s company. His dad is dying and his brother is corrupt. Shane isn’t like his family though, he is an honest guy, a successful attorney. Jones comparing Shane to Jax Teller is what had me jumping to read this book. Shane is sexy, raw, but I also saw so many great qualities honest qualities.

Emily is Shane’s love interest and she is full of secrets too. Even though the story is told through dual point of view I was left guessing and speculating. Emily and Shane build this unexpected connection, but where does she stand? I am so intrigued by Emily and I want to like her, but I am also leery of what she is hiding.

I will be honest this book at times felt slower. I actually think so much of that came from the amount of information we had to have to build the rest of the series. Regardless, I was left wanting more, I was left wanting answers and guessing for what’s to come. I can only imagine what’s to come for these characters, but I know it will be addictive and shocking.

Shane Brandon.

description

Shane has been in Denver for just under a year now. He left his amazing NYC lawyer position to go back home. Home to his criminal family. To save his dad and brother from going to jail or even getting killed. He wants to get all the family companies and monies back under control and into legal businesses. But easier said than done, because his brother Derek is not really interested in anything legal. And his dad is dying of cancer but still holds all the power and he's also still doing illegal things left and right!

Thank God for this pretty girl he meets at the coffee place. Emily. Sweet Emily. It can't hurt to have a little sexy time for himself...

But Emily is not without her own problems....she's running from something or someone.

She was strong, but also sweet and soft in all the ways this life, and my family, has made me hard.

Lots of troubles on the family, business and love-life-front for Shane - and we still don't know what Emily is hiding .....

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO BRANDON & EMILY???
WILL EVERYBODY SURVIVE THIS FIRST BOOK???

Another amazing Lisa Renee Jones series!

GREAT FIRST BOOK!!!!

I had no idea what to expect. I read something about Sons of Anarchy in the blurb and I expected Jax Teller to come riding to the rescue on his bike. But nope. No Jax. It's Brandon...

description

...and he's just as sexy. A hot, tattooed, troubled lawyer trying to save the world. Or at least his little part of it. For all the people he cares about. And that now includes Emily too.

I loved watching them both fight for and against each other and their problems.
This will be an interesting series.
It reminded me a bit of Lisa's Amy Bensen series!

Lots of sexy, romantic, funny, mysterious, frustrating, suspensy and exciting moments!!!
I can't wait to see where book #2 will take us!
Because we're SO not done with #Shamily yet!!!!!☺☺☺

description

HARD RULES was an extremely interesting & exciting & sexy romantic-suspense-mystery... Run to your nearest amazon to find out if there will be a HEA yet!!!

If I had to find something negative...it would be the wordiness of the book. I think it could've been at least 50 pages shorter without losing anything about the story.

When I first read the tag line "Wallstreet meets Sons of Anarchy" I damned near drooled and I couldn't wait to start this one!! Because let's be real: my first thought was Jax Teller in a suit,and those brain cells that I had? WERE COMPLETELY GONE. What I got was a ruthless back stabbing family, secrets, betrayal and more secrets that left me completely exhausted.

"Blood divides as easily as it unites, especially when money and power are involved".

Emily is on the run. Looking to start over and get a new job, her plans for a new life is about to fall In place. Meeting Shane was not a part of her plan but her instant attraction to him, is something that she couldnt deny. But what you're rumning from your past, how can you possibly move on and be at ease with your present?

"She's my light in the storm of betrayal"

Without giving too much away, I really liked the fact the setting was in the corporate world and Shane's interactions with certain members of his family was something to watch. Buuuuuut......... there was too much stuff going on for me. I was left with more questions than answers and I felt like nothing was explained at all.

Another problem that I had was as much as I tried, I couldn't connect with Shane and Emily. I didn't FEEL their connection and they moved a little too fast for my liking. I know that this is the first book in the series but I just wanted SOMETHING to happen in this one and not have me scratching my head in confusion.

If you could overlook that and you love a hot alpha with some good ol family rival, then this book is for you.

This was an adult contemporary romance story, about a guy trying to turn his father’s business legitimate, and a woman hiding secrets of her own.

The characters in this were okay, and I liked both Shane and Emily. I did get the impression that Emily maybe wasn’t her real name though, which was intriguing.

The storyline in this was about Shane and Emily meeting and having an instant connection. Emily ended up working for Shane’s father’s business though, and Shane was trying to do things with the business legitimately whilst his father and brother were going for illegal activities instead. The pace in this was quite slow though, and I didn’t feel sucked into the story the way I did with the Inside Out series.

The ending to this didn’t really tie much up, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the next book.

Lisa Renee Jones is synonymous with seductive romantic suspense and in her newest release, Hard Rules, she masterfully lures her readers down the proverbial rabbit hole of suspense, mystery, chicanery, passion and of the unknown. With her raw prowess and virtuosity of words, Lisa Renee Jones will define the hard rules of trust, duplicity, and love.

 photo 1c8ae2c25815893367ae0bd6dffc61_zpsxvk4wygi.gif “And thanks to you,” he murmurs, his lips near my ear, “I’m not thinking about what I left behind. I’m thinking about what I have right here.”

Hard Rules is the first book of the series Dirty Money and so in this installment, Lisa Renee Jones will lay out the foundation and building blocks of this series as she slowly introduces readers to the main players of the story line. Like in any game of chess, Lisa Renee Jones strategically introduces the players in the most calculating and smart way. She does not give away the secrets of her moves but she lures her readers to beg and question for more.

 photo 1c8ae2c25815893367ae0bd6dffc61_zpsxvk4wygi.gif “I want you, Emily. And I’m going to have you. On my lips. On my tongue.” He nips my earlobe, sending a shiver down my spine as he adds, “On my cock, riding me and thinking of nothing else but me.”

Shane Brandon is a powerhouse attorney who recently gave up his lucrative New York career to handle his family’s business empire. The Brandon Enterprise has gotten itself somewhat tangled with dirty money and it is up to him to clean up the ruthless dealings of his father, brother and possibly his mother. In this family, is there such thing as loyalty? And for Shane Brandon, the only thing that he is 100% sure is that the only person that he can trust and rely on is himself. But what happens when an unsuspecting player enters the game? Is she a pawn or is she an affordable opponent waiting to make her move?

 photo 1c8ae2c25815893367ae0bd6dffc61_zpsxvk4wygi.gif “But it’s not being naked on the outside that has a hotspot in my chest. It’s how oddly naked inside I feel with this man , like he really can see inside me and discover my secrets. It’s guilt that makes me paranoid. I hate the guilt. I hate the bad decisions that have changed my life. No. One bad decision. One stupid, stupid, decision.”

Emily Stevens is an enigma. She has secrets just like Shane but her walls are just as tough and high as Shane. But like any strong fortress, you just have to find that small sliver of crack. For Emily Stevens, Shane Brandon might be the key to unlocking and breaking through her guarded walls of secrets that she holds tight. Who is Emily Stevens? That is one question left unsolved as Shane Brandon finally has laid out the first rule… no more lies.

 photo 1c8ae2c25815893367ae0bd6dffc61_zpsxvk4wygi.gif “It’s time to for some rules,” I say. “Rules?” she asks, her voice quavering. “What rules?”“Hard rules. And hard rule number one is, no more lies”

Hard Rules was the perfect introduction to what I know will be an amazing sexy romantic suspense. This book was riveting, intense, and filled with so many questions. I know Lisa Renee Jones will slowly dissect every facet of truth, lies, secrets, fourberie and chicanery as she will slowly and seductively entice readers for more. More truth. More twist and turns. More suspense. More danger. And more passion. As Lisa Renee Jones lays out the foundation and hard rules, the only question left for you to answer: Are you ready to break the rules or abide by them?

Hard Rules teaser

❝Yes and please. Remember those words and my name because I'm going to make you say them over and over again.❞

Hard Rules is about a man, Shane Brandon, who comes back to town to save his family's business from the corruption which is caused by his father and brother. Along the way, he meets a woman who he fully intended only as a one-night-stand, or at the very least a f*ck buddy. But the more he has of her, the more he wants despite the danger he fears he may be putting her in by associating with his family.

Emily Stevens has come to live in Denver and as it happens, she was just hired at his company as his father's assistant. She needs the job and is afraid of losing it once everyone finds out she is having an affair with one of her bosses. There is also a little mystery surrounding her, what caused her to be there and who the heck is she talking to on those burner phones?

I enjoyed the first part of the book, I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the business. I liked Shane's POV. I could have read more about the happenings and mishaps of the business (which I know we will get in book #2).

What I didn't care for as much was the middle through to the end. I felt things progressed slowly, too slowly for me. I found myself skimming to get past the stuff I didn't care about. Mainly, Emilie's POV. She drove me nuts with the number of times she talked about how she couldn't and shouldn't be in their relationship, then Shane would talk her into having sex and bam, she was back in the relationship again. This back and forth was too repetitive. Also, to go an entire book without any real information about her and why she was there, who she was talking to etc. was maddening. I realize this is a series, so things need to be withheld, but we also need a little information to keep us interested to read the rest.

Will I read the next book, probably because I want to know what is going to happen with his family's business and see how that plays out. I really enjoyed that aspect of 'Hard Rules'.

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher St. Martin's Press, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review ***

I already read several books from this author and loved them all. When I saw this one on NetGalley I wanted to request an ARC immediately... And yay, I’m glad because I loved it.

This book gives us hot, protective Shane with his messed up family and a family business he wants to save by being a good guy. Who can he trust and who not? Is everybody who they seem to be? Even Emily? Emily has her own secrets and is running from them. What should have been 1 night of casual sex ... A hot one night stand with Shane becomes more. Will she be able to keep her secret. Will they push each other away to protect the other or are their feelings too strong?

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series! Is Derek as bad as he seems? I also loved Shane’s secretary Jessica and hope to read more about her. I don’t really have a clue about Emily’s secret so I really want to know it...

Let's just get to the nitty gritty, shall we?

Now hear this, my good friends: I would not lie to you, I simply can't. So know that what I'm about to tell you is 100% honest and not in the least bit embellished. There was a large portion of this book where I had NO IDEA what the heck was going on. Zip. Nada. Nothing. I don't know if I was all of a sudden drunk while reading or just couldn't follow along or what, but apparently some pieces were just going completely over my head. But don't worry, I figured it out eventually (LOL). After a few days of mulling this over, I think I've come to a conclusion as to why this may be. Personally, I feel like there was too much going on in the one book of this new series. It seems like the author thought of this grand plot, and then decided to shove all of the ground work and baselines in to one novel, without a lot of anything else. It may have been better executed (again, own opinion, no one else's) if perhaps we got 3/4 of what we did plot wise, and more relationship development in Hard Rules, and then added in more plot twists or finished the ground work at the beginning of the second book. It just seems like a lot to take in all at once, and I think this is where my biggest problem derives from.

With being confused at different times throughout the book, I found that I wasn't really getting as into it as I had originally hoped. There were a few times I had to reread pages and paragraphs because I simply had no clue as to what was happening, or I was just becoming bored. I don't know what the change was, but once I started on that last 20% the journey finally started to make more sense to me; I understood the characters more and what they were trying to accomplish. This doesn't mean I still don't have a million and one questions, but this section hooked me and didn't release. I think I'll be stuck with this series for a while, because I just have to know what happens!

"Blood divides as easily as it unites, especially when money and power are involved."

The suspense! The intrigue! I guess on the flip side of the coin, this means I have absolutely no clue what's going to happen or where this story might go. I don't know or have guesses as to how it'll turn out, who might do what, where loyalties lie, any of it.

“Who burned you, Emily?”
I blanch but recover with a quick, “Who says anyone burned me?”
“I see it in your eyes.”
“Back to my eyes,” I say.
“Yes. Back to your eyes.”
“Stop looking.”
“I can’t.”

It's not a shocker that I enjoy cliffhangers, I think they're fun, will keep you on your toes and always have you guessing as to what will happen next. Now the ending to Hard Rules has some of these elements, but I didn't think it was as intense as I maybe would have hoped. Based on how it ended, I feel like it's going to be a pretty easy fix from the current situation to get back on track. It may not seem that way for everyone, but I've got a fairly reasonable idea of how to fix said predicament.

One of the first things that I noticed about Shane and Emily was the fact that not only were they both quick and witty, but they can hold a conversation. And I'm not just talking about a flirty, "I think he's cute", type of conversation. There was substance, they could speak about important topics and the other would always have a thought, idea, opinion, and wouldn't be afraid to voice it. And these two were excellent at thinking on their feet, which was both important and impressive considering the situations that they're dealing with. I loved all this! It was so much more than just fluff. Then, when the conversations turned to quick witted banter, I was thrilled.

Overall I really enjoyed these characters and how they play off of each other. Shane seems super alpha which I love, and I appreciate how Emily can and will stand up to him and his family. I'm quite excited to see how this all plays out.

"We are one in this moment, two people lost and found in each other, both of us fighting a battle the other understands in ways no one else can."

I know this can be the point with cliffies, but ultimately upon finishing I'm left with more questions than answers. In fact, I think I'm left with only questions, I'm not sure if i was given a single answer during Hard Rules. But you know what? That just makes me that much more eager to figure out what the heck is going on.

Whether you want to call them themes or just issues that play a major part in the story, I loved the back and forth between both of the characters gaining and giving trust and control. It was a constant struggle, the push and pull, but it was exciting to watch and experience the characters going through the emotions dealing with this challenge. I'm excited to see how this give and take continues in the subsequent novels.

“Say nothing or tell me everything, but don’t lie to me.”

When I started Hard Rules, I had no idea that it was going to be as big of a project as it is. I knew it ended with a cliffhanger, so I thought it might just be two books but no, it's four! There is a lot going on for this to become four books but at this point I'm quite intrigued and excited for the next one. As I already mentioned, the last fifth or so of the book really captured my attention and now I'm dying to see what happens next with Emily, Shane and Brandon Enterprises.

I have never seen Sons of Anarchy or Wall Street, so really I shouldn't be making comparisons but I'm going to anyways, because... I can. I have no clue what SOA is even about, but from what I've heard about Wall Street, this description of comparing it to both seems spot on. Like, 100% accurate, and it's exciting to see that. Drugs, dirty money, the good guy vs the bad guy, who will prevail? What will the casualties amount to and will Shane and Emily be able to take over the company, get it clean and keep each other in the process? Who knows, but I know I'll definitely be along for the ride to find out.

I don’t wanna be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me. —Frank Costello

As I'm sure you can figure out, this was not the average reading experience for me but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Now WHY on earth do I have to WAIT UNTIL FEBRUARY? If I use my grabby hands, do you think it'll come faster? Hmm?

Lisa Renee Jones pulls out all the stops in this romantic suspense that’s full of intrigue, passion, and power plays.

I instantly got sucked into the story of Hard Rules. I loved the fun way Emily and Shane meet, and I felt an immediate connection with both characters. They easily fall into flirtatious banter, and despite leading complicated lives that perhaps should have them running in the opposite direction, they find themselves undeniably drawn to each other. Shane fulfills Emily’s desire to be wanted, and she makes Shane feel like his happiness is a priority for once in his life.

It quickly becomes clear that Emily is hiding a mysterious past. Her life is one big lie, which makes dating a man who desires trust difficult. Meanwhile, Shane is in the midst of a family war over control of the empire his corrupt father has built. Emily could wind up collateral damage—with both her heart and body in danger.

This is one of those stories where everyone has their own agenda, and you’re never 100% certain who the good guys are. Shane’s family is beyond devious. You might want to grab a bucket of popcorn while reading this so you can sit back and really enjoy every backstabbing, calculating, shocking moment of this messed up family.

As much as I enjoyed the story, there are some shortcomings. Emily’s behavior towards Shane gave me whiplash as the story progresses. She pushes him away and then gets mad when he respects her wishes to keep his distance. She repeatedly runs away from him, but the next scene she’s back in his arms.

Another drawback of the story is that I never really understood why cleaning up his father’s company is so important to Shane. He doesn’t need or desire money and power. He doesn’t have a good relationship with his family. Why give up his own ambition and happiness, and get sucked into danger, for a company he was never even part of? I rooted for Shane anyway because I admired him, but the details about the company’s shady dealings didn’t hold my interest.

The biggest strength in this story is the unpredictable and questionable motives of the myriad of complex characters, the unanswered questions about Emily past, as well as Shane and Emily’s blossoming romantic relationship despite all odds.

Hard Rules ends on a cliffhanger. This is book one in a four-part series that follows Shane and Emily. I’m not sure there’s enough plot to continue the story that long, but I enjoy mysteries, and I’m definitely intrigued enough to read the next book.

4 I like drama stars

I am sure my moods play a huge part in weather I like a book or not, I had a really bad week and was in a sad and somber mood which matched this books pace.

 photo somber_zps7vakbpey.gif

I really liked this story and its characters but I totally understand why some people had problems with it. It was a bit slow, there was not enough descriptive sex in it, the whole secret thing that Emily was hiding for the entire book, that we still did not have answers for and my god that prologue!! I mean WTF?? It was of different people and the only references to the story were sports drugs/cartel. So unless I am missing something why was it there at all?

After getting the negative out of the way, some positives. I loved the family drama in this book, not knowing who we should trust or go for. I thought the character development was good and the writing felt mature if that even makes sense. Emily is strong and independent and seems to get even stronger near the end. I fell for the secretary Jessica her spunk and I do as I want attitude was welcoming but of course for me the winner is Shane that man got me all sorts of HOT.

For me this was a beginning of a well laid out family drama that I look forward in continuing.

5 "Chris Merit needs to make room for Shane Brandon" stars!!

I absolutely loved Chris and wondered what kind of hero this series would have. LRJ did NOT disappoint. She found a way to create another phenomenal hero. Shane was honourable, dedicated, dominant, intelligent, charismatic, loyal, protective, and caring. And Emily really seemed to be his perfect match. She was loyal, smart, perceptive, secretive, sweet, and loving. These two together were combustible!

While enjoying a passionate relationship, these two had to navigate their way through the minefield that was the Brandon empire. It wasn't an easy road with Shane's family members each having their own agendas and each trying to manipulate their way to ultimate power.

This book had many elements I love such as mystery, secrets, suspense, bitter rivalry, betrayal, sexiness, and developing love.

It's obvious almost from the start that Emily has been holding on to a huge secret. A secret that she felt could seriously damage her relationship with Shane. I NEED book 2 so I can find out what that secret is!! And to watch Shane show Emily that she had nothing to worry about because he's just that awesome lol.

Lisa Renee Jones created another gem and this story was an incredible kickoff to her new series.

4.5 "NO MORE LIES" stars

It's really ungrateful to sum up the story, so i'll use the blurb cause it perfectly depicts the essence, and it's way better than I could have ever done for this story...

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family's business dealings legitimate.

Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret that could that destroy them both

It's a cruel game of strategies, of scrupules and what you are prepared for to do in order to achieve "good/right" and sometimes the means to do the right thing are bad.

Shane Brandon is a second son, a lawyer and he has had his hardship even through the richness of his background. Cause the world he lives in is a cruel, unyielding machinery that will chew you up and spit you out in a matter of a blink of an eye...and the only way to survive is to play by your own rules...the merciless, calculating kind...and the biggest enemies are the ones closest to him...his family!

The inner battle Shane fights within himself to stay true to his own principles has a high price to pay in order to up float above the survice.

It's a big pond with many sharks and the only way to survive is to eat first...

The chance meeting with Emily Stevens, the young woman, escaping her past, stirs smth in Shane and he wants her...he needs her in a basic carnal way of an outlet...but she becomes more...
and when she turns out to be working for his father, he's needs to raise up his game, but the quesitons of trust pop up in every single encounter they have...and they can't escape the basic need...
The lies are lingering above them, secrets that are best kept hidden and when the danger starts knocking on Shane's door he has the need to protect Emily and keep her safe, away from the "eating criminal machinery" but when the "truth" about Emily's secret comes to the surfice...
the rules of the game are suddenly changing...
"It's time for some rules?"
"Rules? What rules?"
"Hard rules. And hard rule number one is, NO MORE LIES."

This is my first book by this author and I really had no expectations about any of the aspects I usually watch out for in the book...
this story had a slower pace that was manifested through dialogues, and it made me more watchful and attentive during the book, cause you don't wanna miss out on the potential info, right?
And that was both interesting and surprising cause It took me sometime to catch a grif to pull me into the story...
The background setting of an espionage, spy, crime, treachery, betrayal, distrust...made the general feeling risen to the high level of lingering angst and danger...where the main characters try to up float with heads above the muddy waters and still hoping not to lose the "essence" of them true selves in the process.

I freakin LOVE the cover...
I LOVE the blurb...
I might LOVE some other things too... *wink*

I especially, loved Shane and Emily's chemistry that was prolongued by the dialogue making me angsty with itchy anticipation!

Shane Brandon is having terrible, no good, very bad day... It started with his coffee being stolen by a beautiful imp named Emily Stevens, and went down hill from there.

After leaving a lucrative and satisfying law firm position, Shane's back in Denver trying to legitimatize the family business, Brandon Enterprises, much to the dismay of his brother, Derek, and his father. His father is ruthless and is pitting son against son in the battle.

The only real bright spot for Shane is Emily. Yes, the same Emily who he met in the coffee shop. But as Shane and Emily fall for each other, they both realize that the secrets they both hide may just be what undoes them in the end. Can Emily trust Shane enough to reveal her secrets—her truth? Can Shane trust Emily enough for him to reveal his real plan for keeping the family business afloat and on the right side of the law?

No one writes romantic suspense better than Lisa Renee Jones. She has the ability to keep the reader guessing until the final reveal, and she does this in Hard Rules. The ending leaves us at a bit of a cliffhanger—what will happen once Shane and Emily share their secrets; will they continue to work together as partners to ensure the success of Brandon Enterprises, or will those secrets be the nails in the coffin for their relationship, the business and perhaps even their lives?!

Bring on Damage Control. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars

~~~
I waited what seemed like forever for this book. First, the cover grabbed my attention. Then, the synopsis. Then, my grabby hands were reaching like crazy for this book. And the verdict?
It was awesome!
I loved Shane Brandon. He was hot, powerful and intriguing. Emily Stevens is a beautiful woman with secrets, and she has taken Shane by surprise—all over a cup of coffee—and ostensibly changed the direction of his life.
Hard Rules takes us down the dirty rabbit hole of greed and power where money rules. Where the game is not only to win but at what cost. Who will remain on top? I'm a huge fan of suspense, thrills and chills and a bit of mystery. Lisa Renee Jones included all of these elements and a bit of romance, and had hit the jackpot for me.
I'm ready for the next one to see what happens. ~ Heather, 4.5 Hard stars
Emily and Shane have a hot one night stand that doesn’t really feel like a one-time only kind of thing. The connection between these two was powerful and I could literally feel their emotional bonding, not to mention the hot and lusty connection they made. The scene on the balcony is definitely one you won’t want to miss.
description
As is often seen in romance books, both the main characters are keeping secrets. With a dual point of view, Shane’s secrets are pretty quickly revealed. Emily’s however are simply peeked at.
description
I was craving to know what she was hiding.
While I felt somewhat bogged down by all the information that came pouring out at one time regarding Shane’s family’s business, I kept telling myself it would clear itself up the further I read. Nope. I’m still not really sure what exactly all the problems are. I know the brother is up to no good with help from the father. The cartel is involved and there’s some shenanigans with the FDA. The FBI are involved…I think. If they’re not, they will be. So yeah, I messed up by not paying closer attention to that landslide of details.
There is a brief moment or two of other woman drama which is quickly handled and I’m assuming she will come into play in the next book. Yep. That’s right. This is a cliffhanger. And not just a nice little happy for now cliffhanger. Oh no. This is a huge honking cliffy and my nails were being ripped off because I didn’t see it coming so I scrambled to hold on.
description
You know the feeling.
I will definitely be reading the following book.
P.S. This was an ARC that a good friend said was available through NetGalley for an honest opinion. Well, you got honest. And I will honestly tell you that good friends don’t lead other good friends to the edge of the cliff and push without warning.
My first endeavor in Lisa Renee Jones.......Dirty Money Series.
Book 1: Hard Rules
Book 2: Damage Control
Book 3: Bad Deeds
Book 4: End Game
Shane Brandon and Emily Stevens have a connection but it's complicated-Lies, Secrets, and a Family War. The dynamics of the Brandon Family is intriguing- father, mother and brothers all at war with each other, all spinning a tangled web for control of the family business. Emily is a solace to Shane but she has her own secrets and lies that can ruin everything. But along the way, Emily's secrets become too repetitive. (We don't know the secrets, we just are told over and over that Emily's secret will cause Shane to leave her).
I liked the plot and the mystery and intrigue. But the detailing became too much in my opinion and I found myself losing interest. Instead of moving the story forward, I felt that parts became stagnant. I know the setting had to be set but it just felt that the story was too long. I will say that the intense connection between Emily and Shane was very, very steamy!!!
The cliffy was actually really good so the series roped me back in and I am looking forward to book two. I'm interested in finally knowing Emily's secrets.
This is a much complicated cat-n-mouse game within the Brandon family empire that left me feeling slightly puzzled and out of sort. Half the time I don't care much of the corporate drama, the other half I'm feeling information overloaded. It was all very Wall Street and it was kinda dry. But the root of the problem is the romance isn't strong and convincing enough.
First of all, I don't understand the reason for the prologue, I feel like I'm missing something crucial here. Or maybe it a plot that the author plan to develop later on? I'm not sure. From the first chapter, I feel like I was dump into the middle of a family war without much background information.
Seth, the younger son of the Brandon empire is back in hope to gain control of the company and help to change the business into something legitimate. But he had his older brother, Derek, who is set against him.
We spent the majority part of the book on all the corporate espionage, sabotage, backstabbing and family drama between Seth, Derek, Brandon Sr. and their mother. I don't even know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys anymore. Everyone seems to be playing double agents and have their ulterior motive.
Emily, the heroine had a one night stand with Seth during their first day of meeting, only to have her turned out to be Brandon Sr's new secretary. I don't really see her playing an important role in the big scheme of things because most of the time the inside information that she give to Seth are not inconsequential, but she did appear to be hiding a shady secret of her own.
Truth to be told, I don't feel connected to either Seth or Emily because we never get to know about their background, their motivation or even the secrets they hide. There is this constant barrier that prevent me from really knowing them as an unique individual. Secondly, all these corporate drama don't really turn me on. Why do I care whether Seth or Derek came out on top? I don't hate Derek, I didn't fall for Seth either. Thirdly, the romance just didn't sold me. They just never really get the time to let things simmer or develop in a believable pace.
When the ending came, I didn't see that we achieve anything in this Book 1. Many things are left unresolved, question unanswered and it sorta just hang there without any big impact. I know this is a series and there are more to come, but I need at least something concrete to take away from this. Overall, Hard Rules just didn't really hooked me.
***** 4 Stars *****
Shane Brandon was an ambitious lawyer headed for the top in New York City, but he returned to Denver to help his family's empire. His brother was making sketchy deals and bringing in dirty money to the company. This had to stop before the scandal ruined everything.
Everyone in Shane's family is cunning and calculating. There are only a few people he can trust. And Emily is one person that could easily be turned into his weakness.
Emily and Shane's relationship was supposed to be something temporary. Nothing serious. But Shane wants to know everything about her. He can't get enough of her because she keeps him grounded as he goes against his family.
While we see what is going on in Shane's life, everything about Emily is a mystery. Emily wants to tell him her past, but she can't. We really don't know what she's hiding from or what happened to her. I assume book 2 will be more about Emily, and I can't wait to see where this story will go.
Emily is on the run and hiding. She bumps into the son of her soon to be boss, unaware that he is the son, and has a one night stand. Both want more but Emily can't risk it. What she wasn't expecting was to get in the middle of a family at war in their company that lead to the Cartel and possibly the FBI.
Emily and Shane can't stay away from each other and all she wants now is to help Shane fight against his family to protect the company. She knows Shane is the good guy but staying with him could bring more trouble he doesn't need.
This was a great start to a new series. There is so much going on in this story and I love it when an author can keep me guessing. I don't think I'm anywhere close to putting the pieces of the puzzle together. I Loved it and highly recommend it.
