She was rescued on Dec. 21, 2013 in the middle of winter. The officers got a call about multiple cats living in and around an abandoned house in Philadelphia.
Inside the cold home, officers found filthy conditions with floors covered in feces and urine. The officers found several cats and a dog that they named Gingerbread. She was found in a closet near another dog of the same breed who was dead.
When she saw the officers, she tried to stand up, but fell back down.
SPCA vet JoEllen Bruinooge says Gingerbread had a low heart rate, was dehydrated, emaciated and matted in urine and feces when she came in.
Now, almost a year later, the dog has recovered, put on a healthy weight and has been adopted. The SPCA says she lives with a family in a home along the coast of Delaware.
