The American Turkish Society Earthquake Fund:
Relief, Rebuilding, and Preparedness in Van and Beyond

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck eastern Turkey, near the city of Van, on Sunday, October 23, causing significant loss of life, injuries, and damage. Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by fault lines. In 1999, about 18,000 people were killed by two powerful earthquakes that struck northwestern Turkey, followed by others since. For pictures of the devastation, please click here.

The American Turkish Society is deeply saddened by this most recent earthquake and extends its condolences and well wishes to families affected as well as all citizens and friends of Turkey.

As in the past, most notably with our campaign for the 1999 earthquake, we would like to encourage our members and friends to show their support for Turkey by giving generously to our new Earthquake Relief, Rebuilding, and Preparedness Fund.

All contributions to the fund are tax deductible and 100% of the funds received will go to immediate efforts in Turkey to help those affected by the earthquake, such as those of Turkish Red Crescent and AKUT Search and Rescue Association, as well as longer-term interventions to alleviate the impact of earthquakes in the future. We will be collaborating closely with Turkish diaspora organizations in the United States -  a number of which are also generously fundraising to help support the relief efforts - as well as public officials and NGOs in Turkey in directing the funds from The Society to ensure the highest level of impact and effectiveness. We will be sharing regular updates with you.

Thank you for your generous support.
