Dear Houston Humane Society,

(UPDATE! Houston Humane Society stopped declawing in August 2021.)

We, the undersigned, ask you, Houston Humane Society, to protect all animals and speak out against declawing, educate the public about the humane alternatives, and not perform low cost declaws at your clinic.

Your animal shelter is one of only TWO in America that is declawing cats in your Wellness Clinic.

UPDATE 2021. Here's the link to Houston Humane Societies declawing info where they say, "DECLAWING SURGERY
The Houston Humane Society has modified its surgical approach in regards to declawing a cat. If you would like to have your cat declawed at the Houston Humane Society, we require scheduling a "Behavior Consultation" prior to making the surgery appointment to determine if the cat is a good candidate for surgery. Making an informed decision before undergoing this surgery is important to us for the wellbeing of your pet."  HHS's 2021 declawing info

UPDATE DECEMBER 2020- HOUSTON HUMANE SOCIETY TOOK THIS DECLAWING INFO AND PRICE OFF THEIR WEBSITE BUT ACCORDING TO A SUPERVISOR AT HHS, THEY STILL DECLAW CATS AT THEIR WELLNESS CLINIC. THIS SUPERVISOR SAID THEY DON'T DECLAW THEIR ADOPTABLE CATS BECAUSE IT IS INHUMANE, BUT IF YOU ADOPT A CAT AND PAY OUT OF POCKET, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAT DECLAWED AT THEIR WELLNESS CLINIC.

There are many declawed kitties in Houston who were thrown away because of behavioral issues they developed from their toe amputations. Many of those declawed cats are euthanized because they can't find new homes.

Your 2016 Declawing info said, "The HHS offers limited surgical declawing by licensed veterinarians in an effort to help cats remain in their homes" and you say that the declaw must be performed at time of spay/neuter surgery.

There are no studies or proof that declawing helps keep a cat in a home, in fact the opposite has been proven.

Please protect the health and well-being of cats and stop performing this inhumane, mutilating, and very unnecessary amputation procedure in your WELLNESS Clinic.

These are some of the things you say in your About Us section on your website, "The Houston Humane Society is dedicated to, and working towards, ending cruelty, abuse and the overpopulation of animals while providing the highest quality of life to those in our care. With your help we can reduce animal suffering throughout the Houston area."

Declawing is the amputation of a cat's last toe bone and claw. Declawing is performed at the Houston Humane Society's WELLNESS clinic despite it having absolutely no benefit to the cat and despite it being bad for the welfare of ALL cats.

Cats deserve better.

Please provide brochures and information about the humane alternatives like nail trims, sturdy scratchers, and Soft Paws. Please educate cat owners in Texas about the awful truth about declawing so they stop asking for this barbaric and harmful procedure for their beloved cats.

It's time for you to be strong and be a true HUMANE leader in animal welfare and protection. We will celebrate your bravery in leading the way to a better world for cats.
