Once and Forever #4

Immaterial Defense

Rate this book
She’s all alone in the darkness.
He’s lighting up the stage.

But not even the brightest spotlight can reach the shadows of a broken soul.

Declan
Every wanna-be rocker dreams of the day when crazed fans will pack their shows. But the more people worship me as some kind of musical god, the more I realize why singers are called "performers." I'm just a pretender. A fake.

I need something real. Something to break through the revolting glamour that's bled into every part of my life. And for one perfect night, I found that in Sara.

Then she ran.

Sara
No sane woman would’ve ever walked away from Declan Hollis after only one night. But walking away from him was the safest move for both of us.

I've spent so much time burying my old self in the past, trying to erase the vulnerable person I used to be. I’m smarter now—men are dangerous, and relationships are doubly so.

But the more time I spend away from him, the more I want to go back.

I may end up shattered all over again. Or maybe, just maybe, he'll be the one to help me pick up the pieces.

Hurray! Release date is Sept 25th!

Well, personally I think this book is fan-tastic, and I love all the characters. :-) Declan is the perfect balance of alpha-protector-with-a-heart-of-gold-who-isn't-afraid-of-looking-silly that I enjoy writing so much. And I felt for Sara in a way I'm not sure I've ever felt for any of my heroines. The side characters in this one were a lot of fun to write, especially their best friends - Trevor and Emilia.

Declan and Trevor are totally new characters to the series, but you may remember Sara and Emilia from Virtually Impossible and Deeper Water. They were Andi's friends - Emilia owns the virtual assistant company they worked for and Sara was Andi's hard-partying friend who lent Andi her name.

As there are with all my books, there are some serious issues in this one. I hope I was able to convey how much I respect those who've gone through heartbreaking situations like that or have watched someone they love go through them.

Thank you for your incredible patience with this book, everyone. The good news is I'm already about halfway done with the next and have FINALLY found my groove again. I truly hope you enjoy Immaterial, and stick around for what's next.

This starts out hot with a sizzling one nighter between Sara and the guy whose name starts with a D and ends with a N! She might not remember his name but she does remember how good his is with his mouth, hands and dick. She hit the trifecta! Much to Declan's dismay she runs off the next morning without making plans to see each other again. After all they had great chemistry and maybe a connection. But Sara is wary of men and she doesn't know who he really is. Declan is the hunky, reluctant superstar rocker in a band about to take off. But Sara is dealing with family issues and a devastating trauma. This story has some heavy subject matter that will leave you reeling and crying right along with Sara. Declan's not perfect and has his own baggage to deal with but these two obviously belong together. Even though they are shrouded with doubt at times they manage to work through their issues and find a good place together. Lovely writing and terrific characters makes this a great read. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

This had the humor and snarky banter I expect from a Lauren Stewart book. Declan is on the path to his band hitting it big. There are girls everywhere but one night with Sara he feels a connection. Sara doesnt trust easily so relationships are not an option for her.

This was a bit hard for me to get into. I had guessed what Sara's issues were but it was a slow reveal. I think it would have flowed better had it come sooner in the story. It was just at the surface making it drag. I loved Declan. He was a nurturer. This was evident by his relationship with his best friend. I can see why he was drawn to Sara.

Overall, I liked Immaterial Defense but it wasn't my favorite in the series. I love this author's humor and am looking forward to the next book.

This was a bit of a disappointment for me:( I've liked all the books in this series and was really excited to read the next book. But this was not the same quality that I've learned to expect from this author. Declan was a real sweetheart and I felt for Sara with her issues, but I think the story was childish and repetitive.
I hope Lauren Stewart is back to her usual form in the next part of the series!

Again...Lauren Stewart does not disappoint! Good humor (as usual), Great storytelling. Lovable but flawed characters with realistic insecurities. Story flowed very well. Great read!

ARC supplied by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I am loving this series by Lauren, and was fortunate enough to be chosen to ARC read this book, thank you for that Lauren!
Everything is not always as it seems.
And that couldn't be more true for our leading lady, Sara. Previously she has seemed in control and on top of her life, but the truth is slowly coming to the fore. Things are not that happy for our girl, and then she meets Declan. He too seems pretty held together and carefree, could he be the one to help Sara sort her life?
Turns out, Declan has as much crap in his bag as Sara does , maybe more.
Can the pair together get both their lives back on track? seems, yes, then no, then maybe.
But of course this is our own private world of fantasy and HEA's, so it's kind of a given that our Hero and heroine will get theirs.
It's the getting there that's the fun.
Another great installment in this series that I am loving.
Job well done, Lauren!

☆☆☆ NOW LIVE! ☆☆☆

"While I'd been so busy coping badly, I'd almost missed out on something amazing with someone amazing. If Declan hadn't been so patient, so stubborn, I would've kept thinking I could go on like I had been indefinitely"

3.5 Stars ☆☆☆+

I'm a huge fan of this author! ...but what I'm not usually a fan of is a romance where the MC is a musician (I know, there's something wrong with me!!) So as much as I enjoy Lauren's writing, I did struggle to get into this one at first. Compared to previous books it also felt alot heavier and the emotional stuff? Oh man it got to me!

I just felt sorry for, well, all of them! For Sara, who was clearly just having a rubbish time of things and doing her best to keep going To Declan being miserable so that his best friend didn't have to be. My heart broke for them and I think that because the previous books touched on heavier emotional stuff while still having alot more humour and banter thrown in to lighten things up, I just didn't expect it and wasn't prepared to almost cry, I guess.

BUT (and yay there is a but) I can honestly say that once the romance started to develop and I got to know the characters, I really did enjoy this one (especially the band!). Declan and Sara were far from perfect and they have a lot of shit to sort out but I LOVED how committed Declan was to Sara right from the beginning. I loved that when one of them inevitably started to doubt what they had or began to unknowingly sabotage, the other would be there, strong and supportive and exactly what the other needed. Character development game was strong ;)

My favourite thing about the whole book though? What absolutely stole the show for me? Trevor. I LOVED LOVED LOVED him. His banter, his love for Declan, his humour, his little wise words of wisdom and even all his flaws. That guy got to me.

"Have You learned nothing from me, Dec? No matter what it is, until you quit trying, every moment you have is a moment you can make something incredible happen."

If you liked the previous books in the series, you'll definitely like this and even if you don't usually like guys in bands, you'll still like this! Because when shit gets heavy, there is Trevor (brace yourself towards the end though! Literally almost cried!)

Fuck off, man. This isn't about having fun. This is work. So, because I love you as much as a man can love another man without breaking some countries' laws, I'm going to stay stone-cold sober until we find her. Or until next week, whichever happens first."

IMMATERIAL DEFENSE is a standalone in the Once and Forever Series and Book 4. I always enjoy Lauren Stewart's unique humor in telling her “Once Upon A Time” stories.

Declan Hollis is a reluctant up and coming rock star in a band named Self Defense. He is the face of the band because he is the lead singer. This is really not his dream, but he can't let his best-friend Trevor and the other guys in the band down. So when he went home he wanted to be left alone, just him, his guitar and his eighty pound Goldendoodle dog named Kitty.

All that changed when he had a one-night stand with a girl named Sara. She had no clue about the Declan Hollis that was lead singer of Self Defense. She'd met Declan Hollis, the man who just wanted to be normal. They connected so well and he didn't want to bring her into any part of his band life. He didn't want Sara to judge him for what he did. He wanted her to judge him for who he really was. He wanted the chance to get to know one another slowly, naturally, and in a real way. For one magical, perfect night he thought he had found what he wanted in Sara, but then she ran.

Declan was devastated that Sara left that morning, leaving him with zero ways to contact her. He knew how messed up he was, but it had usually taken at least until lunchtime for a woman to figure it out. He hadn't met a sane woman in years, so what was the chance that Sara wasn't crazy, too? Obviously, she had issues. But she was just screwed up enough to make her irresistible to his screwed-up side. She became “The Sara” and the one that got away. He was on a quest to find her. No matter what it is, until you quit trying, every moment you have is a moment you can make something incredible happen.

My favorite lines in the book, were between Sara and best friend at a house warming party. “Thanks for the wine and my wine rack, which has never been so beautifully filled as it is right now. But please tell me you didn't bring Chardonnay. I swear, every single one of Rob's friends brought us a bottle, and I can't stand the stuff.” I love wine, but got sick once on Chardonnay, so I can't stand it either!!

Immaterial Defense (Once and Forever #4) by Lauren Stewart
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Another great one from my friend Lauren. I can’t say enough how I love the snark her characters have plus I like that she brings different qualitied to them that you might not find in other books.
Declan is a Rockstar in a band he totally loves. He, however, isn’t a fan of the rock star life of love ‘em and leave ‘em. He wants to find a girl who has zero clue who he is and what he is. When he meets Sara there is an instant zing of chemistry. He is considering MAYBE getting to know her when she runs out of his room in the middle of the night. LOL Declan just can’t get her out of his head. He needs to see her again but he has zero clue her name or anting about her except for her intimate parts *Snickers*
Sara has some issues with men. She WILL NOT fall in love or be an idiot over a man again. She is just gonna love ‘em and leave ‘em. She made a stupid decision once and now her career is a hot mess because of it. When he runs into Declan again after THAT night, she decides to give him another quick roll not realizing he will not let her escape again!
Now Declan wonders if she will be able to handle who HE IS? Will she wanna be with the Rockstar or just Declan???
I loved Declan. He was the best thing about this book. He is so sweet ad emotional and I just wanted to snuggle him. His agent is a douche wanting him to choose a single career or staying with the band. His band mates were a scream and cracked me up a lot in the book. Sara…..she was a tough nut for me at times. I liked her and then wanted to smack her on the head in for being so freaked out.
As always, I love me some Lauren and I hope you give her series a try because sarcasm is something she does VERY WELL!

Well, what a beautiful love story! Lauren does not disappoint - another well-written emotional story of a jaded rock-star and a broken heroine. Declan is a popular lead singer for Self Defense with no shortage of sold out shows, parties, and women who worship the ground he walks on. On the outside Declan is a rock God but inside he is confused and jaded. Declan’s life seems fake and all he wants is something/someone real. Declan got his wish when he met Sara who has no clue who Declan was which is exactly what he wanted. They have great connection; the chemistry is instant and the sex was off the chart amazing. Declan thought he finally found someone he can get to know and have a normal relationship with, but after that one incredible night Sara ran. Declan was devastated Sara left no trace and no way of contacting her. Sara has her reasons. No matter how hard it was, Sara knew she had to leave him behind. Sara learned the hard way about men and relationship – dangerous and heartache. Sara’s motto is to satisfy the itch and leave them behind. What happened though when Sara ran into Declan again intending to do the same but this time Declan isn’t going to let her go that easy??? Declan is determined to break down her barriers slowly and show her there is true love out there. I love that the characters in this book are flawed. They are people with real issues and that make them so much more relatable. I especially love Declan – he is as real as you can get. He is sweet, loyal, patience, emotional guy. Sara has her issues and I totally understand why she is an intimacy-fob but I can see how hard it is for Declan. Immaterial Defense has a little bit of everything – humor, angsty, sizzling hot, a bit of heavy subject matter. Over all, this was a page-turner. A fantastic read!
I am a big fan of this author and all her books. Can't wait for more to come!

This was a great, angsty read.

"I really liked this girl. More than should be possible at this point. It's hard to believe I'd only met her a couple of hours ago."

Declan is a rising rockstar. He has no shortage of willing women but he makes a real connection with Sara and is convinced that she felt something, too. So why does she seem reluctant to explore something more with him?

"I'm surprised you want to walk away from something this good. Something I think could be amazing if given half a chance."

Sara has baggage. She's good with one-night-stands because that's intimacy on her own terms. She wants to be strong but that means being on her own and not relying on anyone except herself. However, Declan chips away at her defenses.

"There was nothing casual about what we were doing. This was real. And the scariest part was how good it felt."

Declan realises he needs to be patient and go slowly with Sara because she obviously has issues. At the same time, he is dealing with his own issues, and needs to know that Sara is there for him when the chips are down.

This was a great read. It was angsty and dealt with a sensitive subject. I loved how Sara gradually let down her barriers to welcome Declan in. She was prickly and evasive. Declan was a good, solid guy with a lot of responsibility on his own shoulders - decisions he'd made that he wasn't one hundred percent on board with - due to trying to please the people he cared about. He was a natural caregiver and nurturer. I loved how he looked past Sara's armour to the real, vulnerable woman beneath.

This story was based on The Emperor's New Clothes and it was about Sara outwardly being someone she wasn't, but I think it was just as much about Declan being someone he wasn't either.

Immaterial Defense is the story of two people with flaws & demons, so the angst levels were high, playing with my emotions throughout. It took a while for my suspicions to be revealed as truth about what happened to Sara to make her so skittish, which made for a frustrating push & pull between her & Declan, who has his own issues. However, his issues don't keep him from wanting to see if he & Sara have something real, while she was a flight risk. So as much as she drove me absolutely CRAZY on one hand, on the other, it was refreshing to see a heroine as the gun shy about relationships, especially since their chemistry was off the charts HOT, and they had already hooked up. As I turned page after page waiting for the big reveal in regards to both of their lives, it made for some twists that came out of nowhere, so the f-bombs took flight. There was an entertaining cast of secondaries that made for humorous interactions which had me laughing, just what I needed, as it seemed hard for me to really get invested until about half way through the book. Finally, after all the angst filled pages driving me to a big finish, it seemed like the ending was a bit too rushed after everything. (This is only MY OPINION) Anyway, Lauren Stewart's talented writing style kept me turning the pages, so I will be reading more of her work in the future, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I didn't think after the first three ....

Novels I would buy this, however, finally in Hayden and Andi's book we begin to see who Sara is, and totally is not! Wow!
Yet again, you jumped straight into a subject that is incredibly difficult for anyone involved! But not just the surface, the reality, no one believes, surely your mistaken, whatever you're obviously making this more than it is ... So much more! This subject when dealt with appropriately, still attacks the victim, which explains why so many never say a word. Internalization becomes self destructive, and that destruction is not always alcohol or drugs, so many more ways, than people realize!
I loved Sara from the beginning, such a fun individual, then so withdrawn, not just fighting internally, but externally. Then along comes Declan, who is is dealing with the same issues, as well as a savior complex. But, regardless of Sara herself, Declan wants her.
Many teary moments in this book! But some terrific fun as well, Trevor was an amazing secondary character, who brought another social stigma to the table, but this woke Declan with Trevor's help, that Declan never even realized how much he did for him, and for Declan and Sara to be together!
4th intense book, and am glad I did buy!

Amazing!

4.5 STARS!!!! Lauren Stewart’s Once and Forever series is one of my favorites ever and this latest addition to the collection might just be the best one yet! I absolutely fell in love with Declan and Sara and mostly read their story in one sitting. It’s just that good. I instantly clicked with both characters and I loved their realism, their humor and of course their chemistry. But more than that I just love how perfectly they fit together, and how both Declan and Sara are characters that you can truly believe in, and truly want them to have their happily ever after. Everything about this story was just amazing, from the character development to the flawless dialogue, it works on every level. And Declan is perfect. Well, he’s got his flaws but they just help to make him even stronger.
Lauren Stewart thank you so much for bringing these characters to life and for giving us their story. This was an incredibly fun journey to travel on and I miss them so much already. As always, I’m waiting with baited breath for your next masterpiece.

Great Book

I really have enjoyed this series but for some reason this one was a little harder to get through. I think it was a case of bad timing. This book deals with some sensitive subjects and a lot was happening in the news at the time I read it related to sexual assault. That being said, the book was well written. I did get frustrated with both characters at times for being so quick to doubt the other person but I did like the way everything came together. My biggest complaint though was that the end felt so rushed. I would have loved to get some kind of epilogue or at least an extra couple of pages of them being together.

In true Lauren Stewart fashion, this story provides laughter and love for all the characters involved. Although it is book 4 in the series, it can totally be read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend reading them all, because the feels that each book takes you through is truly a wonderful adventure. I was provided an ARC for an honest review on the book, and the story of Declan and Sara truly left me with the warm and fuzzies. I fell in love with Declan from the get go, something about a guitar playing bad boy wanna be that just gets the blood pumping...

An ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This was actually my first Lauren Stewart book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. She did a great job on character development, and I as the reader loved that we got to know Declan and Sara so well. I sometimes feel that one character get more developed than the other when reading, but that wasn't the case here! The story flows well with great banter, laugh out loud moments, and perfect intimate moments as well. Overall, this is a great read and add in the fact that Declan is a musician and I was hooked!

Rock star Declan is the lead singer and the face of his band, but underneath he is jaded, and he just wants a normal life. When he escapes to his home, he ends up having a one night stand with Sara, who he feels is the “one” for him. No spoilers; this is a definite must read, you will not be disappointed! This is a well written story, which is flawless and filled with humor, fun, and is an all round entertaining read. I was totally hooked and intrigued throughout this addictive page turner. I cannot wait to read more from this talented author, and I highly recommend for all readers!

I love all the books from Once and Forever series so I cound't wait to read this one. And I was not disappointed! Once I started reading I was hooked. The story was PERFECT. I loved Sara and Dylan, ehm... I mean Declan. Lol I love Lauren's humor. And I really liked all the new characters. Trevor is such a sweetheart, I want to hug him. This story was exactly what I hoped for it to be and more. Also thumbs up for adding Kitty to the story ❤️

I adored this book! Sara and Declan were an amazing couple. I'm also kind of partial to the name Sara, so there's that, too.

Seriously though, this book is so good!! I loved the other books in the series, but this one is, by far, my favorite!

It was so well written and real. I was able to feel Sara and Declans's despair over their lives and the fear they both lived with daily. It's hard to make me actually feel, so kudos for that!

Loved, loved, loved!!!

Loved, loved, loved the story! I started reading this series of books with the "Virtually Impossible" book and then searched for the stories of the other characters in it. Each and every book is an amazing experience, but what I think really stands out in this one is the letter from Declan to Sara just before the ending. I still cry when I read it and often go back to this book just for that part. Certainly worth reading!

Immaterial Defense is such a wonderful read. The characters have great chemistry and the flow of the story was such that I got sucked in completely. True to her style of writing... I swooned, squee-ed, cried, actually laughed out loud and then ultimately cried all the happy tears!

I am absolutely in love with Lauren Stewart's Once and Forever Series. Her fairy tales never disappoint!

I’m going to have to come back to leave a proper review but between how much I love Declan (who is the reason this 5 stars and not 4) and how much I appreciated the growth and journeys for all the characters in this I just couldn’t stop reading and now I need to sleep.
