Description
The CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) is launching its fifth round of the IHDCYH Talks Video Competition, a unique opportunity to submit short videos (recommended maximum length of 5 minutes) sharing evidence-based messages in the area of maternal, reproductive, child and youth health. This competition encourages the production of videos that present a clear evidence-based message to a lay audience that is designed to have a positive impact on the health of children, youth and families.
This competition is soliciting videos not just from members of the research community, but also more widely from non-governmental or not-for-profit organizations (including community or charitable organizations), as well as members of the general public who are able to demonstrate a clear, evidence-based message related to IHDCYH's mandate.
Successful videos will be posted on CIHR and IHDCYH social media and shared through other communications channels. It is important that the content be engaging, easily understood and accessible to a lay audience.
Funds Available
CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $5,500, enough to fund four prizes.
- Of this $5,500:
- $3,000 is available to fund 1 first place prize
- $1,000 is available to fund 1 runner-up prize
- $1,500 is available to fund 2 specially commended prizes of $750 each.

- A knowledge user
- A trainee
- A representative from a Canadian non-governmental or not-for-profit organization (including community or charitable organizations) with an explicit health research or knowledge translation element within their mandate. If individuals cannot provide consent, e.g. passers-by on the street, then their appearance must be concealed such that they are unrecognizable.
- Content that does not originate from the applicant's team is acceptable for inclusion with appropriate consent, but should be clearly placed into context and should not be the predominant theme.

Evaluation Criteria
Ninety percent (90%) of the rating of the applications for the IHDCYH Talks Awards will be obtained through an assessment by a peer review committee, based on the strength of the video relative to the following criteria:
- Relevance (35%): The extent to which the video successfully presents evidence-based research related to IHDCYH's mandate and/or strategic research priorities that incorporate a message designed to have a positive impact on the health of children, youth and families. A clear description of the evidence used in the video must either be part of the video or included in the Research Summary of the application.
- Accessibility (25%): The content is delivered in a language that can be understood by a lay audience. It is engaging and provided in a creative manner.
- Innovation & Creativity (20%): The overall originality of the video; use of original ideas, illustrations and style.
- Video Quality (10%): Appearance, sound, image quality and duration.
The remaining ten percent (Reach 10%) will be attributed through a public online voting process. Public voting will open on November 1st, 2018 at 9:00am EDT and close on November 30th, 2018, at 5:00p.m. EST.
- The number of likes a video receives will be directly tied to the rating attributed for this criterion.
