Inova Hospitals Nationally Recognized for Excellence by The Leapfrog Group and CMS

Falls Church, VA – Once again, all five Inova hospitals received an “A” grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Inova’s achievements in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.  The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades program is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patient care.

In addition to this significant achievement, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital have received 5-star ratings for the 2021 CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating.  Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and Inova Alexandria Hospital also received impressive 4-star ratings from the federal agency.  Inova is still the only hospital system in the Washington, DC region with 5-star rated hospitals from CMS and is the highest ranked system in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“Safety at Inova has always been a priority, and even more so during the past year as we have more protocols in place to protect our patients, visitors and team members from COVID-19,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova Health System. “We know that excellence in healthcare is a never-ending journey and the recognition from Leapfrog and CMS confirm that we consistently make it a top priority to keep our patients safe. With our relentless focus on putting our patients and their safety first and foremost, we are on the right path to becoming one of the leading health systems in the nation.”

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Inova shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

Inova Loudoun Hospital has received straight A’s for 19 consecutive grading periods, since the inception of the program.  Inova Fair Oaks has received A grades for 18 consecutive grading periods; Inova Mount Vernon for 14; and, Inova Fairfax and Inova Alexandria Hospitals six consecutive times.

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

Inova’s 5-star ratings from CMS were earned through a rigorous analysis of 48 patient care standards during a three year period – July 2016 – June 2019 – including safety of care, re-admission rates, patient experience, effectiveness and timeliness of care, efficient use of medical imaging, and value of care. Of the 3,355 hospitals surveyed in the country, only 13% received the 5-star rating from CMS – and Inova holds three of those coveted ratings. These ratings help our patients make informed decisions about where they or a loved one may seek the care they need.

“This achievement is a credit to the dedication of each and every team member to provide safe, quality, high reliability and world-class healthcare to the communities we are privileged to serve,” said Dr. Jones. “The recognition by CMS underscores our commitment to Patient Always and reminds our patients that we are dedicated to providing excellent care every time they need us.”
