Interview with Merry Doll Round

Hello everybody! Today we have a new interview, and this time the spotlight is on Nuria, also known as Jindoucel, the artist behind Merry Doll Round. As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, an all the photos here belong to Nuria and were used with her permission.

Now, onto the interview!

How did you find out about BJDs?
The first time I saw one, was a Dollfie Dream labeled as BJD on a comic store of my city. That was around 2006/2007. Later, I decided to research a little more about this dolls, I registered on forums and went looking for more information… I got my first doll, an Angell-Studio Vera, in 2008.

How did you decide to start your doll brand? Do you have a workspace?
I started due to several motives. Probably, the first was money. I had so much expenses due to College and it was impossible to save, so I decided to make my own dolls. But I never thought about the huge amount of money I would have to invest on it! I did several tries. Make a mermaid and a human body was my original idea, but I failed miserably. After realizing how much I needed to leard, I decided to be serious and do something easier, an SD head, Merry. And so it started, more or less.
I have had several workspaces, but the all-time space has been my desk in front of the computer, or the table of the living room, because I lived with my parents.
After moving alone I may say I have a place to work, although due to customs I can’t avoid occasionally moving to the living to sculpt!
Also I must confess that I’m really untidy! If I show you a picture of a tidy workspace I would be lying, so have a picture of its natural state ;D

I have always been curious regarding the name of your brand. How did you pick it?
It is really simple! Merry Doll Round comes from merry-go-round, or carousel. I have always been excited when I saw a classic carousel! The music, horses and painted carousels, the columns, the decoration, the lights… I’m really childish in that manner!

All your sculpts are really pretty and have distinctive features. Is there any meta/idea behind your designs? How do you get inspired to sculpt?
Thank you! Sometimes they are all so different that don’t look made by the same person! I believe that the most different one from Merry (the first head) is Ophelia (the third one) but I believe that is because I was looking for my own style. At first, I tried to sculpt them basing of sketches I had stored from my own original characters, but with time I have ended up using portraits to create a more realistic style. Right now I’m very focused on portraits of different ethnics and on attempting non-classical beauties.

You have recently participated on Dolls & Party. Do you want to talk about that experience? Have you participated on other cons or events?
Yes! The truth is that I have only been able to participate on the Dolls & Party that were located on Spain, and I have had so much fun on all the events! Everything has been excellent, and it seems everybody is really excited and happy to say hi, people (both people with booths and visitors) are very respectful (it is so funny when they ask permission to take pictures!) and the staff cares about the booths. I recommend everyone interested to be part of the next year’s edition.
To me, all of this has also the added value that such an event on my own country, allows me to meet people that I know from years on the hobby, but because we live far away we can’t see us a lot, it is really exciting! I still can’t afford to go outside my country to sell, but I hope to be able to participate on the Dolls Rendez-Vous on Paris this December! And on 2016, if everything goes well, I would love to participate on other European events and overseas. I would be so excited!
¿Has participado en otras convenciones o eventos?
Si!

Do you have a personal doll collection? Would you talk about them?
Of course! Before being a sculptor I have been a collector, but given that I’m so focused on sculpting and working, all of them are incomplete. I would love to have a whole vacations month and be able to work on finish them! My collection has always been small because I hardly have space at home. They are currently 10 dolls: Hotaru (Elfdoll sleeping Sooah), Charlie (Elfdoll June), Drozeh (DollShe Saint), Jiza (MDR Merry), Michello (Little Rebel Tenten), Amanda (Irrealdoll Ringo), Éclair (Fairyland Pukifee Zoe), Pruna y Lupe (MDR Pruna) y Mousse (MDR Mousse). You could have seen, but ¡I only have 3 MDR sculpts on my family, of the 6 I have sculpted, simply because I don’t have room!
¿Tienes una colección personal de muñecas? ¿Nos contarías un poco sobre ellas?
Claro! Hotaru (Elfdoll sleeping Sooah), Charlie (Elfdoll June), Drozeh (DollShe Saint), Jiza (MDR Merry), Michello (Little Rebel Tenten), Amanda (Irrealdoll Ringo), Éclair (Fairyland Pukifee Zoe), Pruna y Lupe (MDR Pruna) y Mousse (MDR Mousse).

Sadly, the hobby is suffering a lot due to recasts. Which is your stance on this matter?
I have had a lot of opinions on this regard, always against it, sometimes more radical, sometimes more moderate. It is clear that recast only damages the hobby. As a sculptor I’m afraid that some of my sculpts may be ‘too popular’ and that somebody decide that they don’t want to pay my job and recast it. And what would be a joy (to have a popular sculpt) becomes a headache. By “luck” none of my dolls are so popular! While trying to put a price, I always try to lower it as much as I can without losing money, because I don’t want the price being an excuse for it to be recasted. As a collector, you cannot even discard boxes (with the space they take!) or you have to carefully store certificated to be able to prove that your second hand doll is legit.
Maybe one of the most worrying things is that some-sort of “pro-recast pride”. A lot of recasts owners take pride on having something that directly harms the artists that sculpted something that they claim to love so much. It doesn’t have sense, right?
In the other hand, I know a number of people that have formerly owned recasts, but with time have realized how much harm they cause, then sold them and ended up buying the original sculpt. That is a big step.

Finally, is there something else you would like to share with us?
Before anything, I would like to thank all the people that follow my work on social sites, each ‘like’ or comment mean a lot and make me truly happy!
On the other hand, I want to share that there is currently an open pre-order for the Fang head, and also some limited units of the MDR SD-sized heads with the new Komorebi body.
I would also like to say that from August 5th to 15th will be an open pre-order for the little Mouse!

  1. I am such a massive fan of MDR as a brand but Nuria seems like such a lovely person too.
Fang is my most favourite sculpt (I'll be grabbing one as soon as I can!) but I also have a Merry. They are some of the most diverse and unique sculpts out there and I nothing but extreme respect for her range of talents. This was a great interview.

I love her 'messy' workspace too. I always find the best artists live in a state of organised chaos. Its how I live too. XD
