Notre Dame successfully defended its title Tuesday at the Big East Championship. The Irish finished 16 shots ahead of runner-up Louisville.
At No. 60 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, Notre Dame entered as the highest-ranked team in the field. An opening 4-under 284 at Reunion Resort’s Watson Course in Orlando, Fla., left the team one shot ahead of Louisville but with second and third rounds of 286 and 282, respectively, the Irish shot 12-under 852 and pulled clear of the Cardinals. The title is Notre Dame’s eighth Big East crown, and it’s the 14th time the team has finished in the top 3 in 17 conference starts.
Villanova (870) finished two shots behind Louisville, followed by St. John’s (876) and Georgetown (883).
Notre Dame senior Max Scodro, despite a double bogey on the final hole, shot 73 for a 6-under 210 total to repeat as individual champion, the sixth Big East medal for the Irish. Louisville’s Justin Dorwood (72) finished one stroke behind. Villanova’s Michael Kania (72) and Notre Dame’s Chris Walker (68) tied for third at 212.
