A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Dry erase whiteboards are magical. Every student should have access to one (along with funky-colored dry erase markers, of course!) I have seen the most complex study material come alive for a student using a whiteboard and visual notetaking techniques, especially if the student struggles with verbal memory, working memory, attention and even higher levels of reasoning. Something incredible happens in the brain when we pair visuals with words...the left and right hemispheres 'talk' and POOF! associations and vivid memories are formed!

Watch this month's Screencast video presentation with Sam to learn more about memory, active studying and whiteboard magic!

"The success of visual note-taking is backed by science. The Picture Superiority Effect refers to the phenomenon that we remember pictures better and longer than words or text. If students read text alone, three days later they only remember 10 percent of the information - but adding a picture to the text increases recall to 65 percent. And dual-coding theory says that our brains process and store visual information differently than verbal or text-based information. When students use images and text in note-taking, it gives them two different ways to pull up the information, doubling their chances of recall," Sherrill Knezel
