District plans to move to 4-day school week
A change in how Iowa counts the amount of time students spend in school could help schools like East Sac County move to a four-day school week. The district is considering the move, which would mean going to classes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on four days instead of 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on five days per week, which is the current schedule.Leaders at East Sac County Schools said a four-day school week will provide a separate day for things like professional development and parent teacher conferences."Then we can have four solid days of absolutely no interrupted education," said Tammy Vine, a Spanish teacher at East Sac Schools."We need to have professional and development for teachers so it's exclusive to them and then we just need to be able to teach," said Teresa Tigges, a study skills teacher at East Sac Schools. On July 1, Iowa law is changing to allow school districts to base their schedules on hours versus the current requirement of 180 teaching days. The new law will consider a day worth 5.5 hours and require 1,080 instructional hours per year."What we want to do is have the same number of hours but have it at a higher quality because it's really guaranteed so to speak we're not going to duck around with this, this is teaching time and it's sacred," said Kevin Fiene, East Sac County Schools superintendent.During a public forum on Monday, some parents expressed concern about finding day care and students staying alert for a longer school day.Teachers who support the move said the four day schedule will only add a few more minutes to each high school period and they may change elementary schools schedules to have academic classes at the beginning of the day and art and physical education classes near the end."I'd have more time to make sure that my project is done correctly and we would have more time in school so it's more time to ask the teachers for help," said Kayla Deal, a junior at East Sac Schools.School officials said they have had Skype conversations with Waco schools, which have already moved to a four-day school week. Leaders at East Sac County Schools said a four-day school week will provide a separate day for things like professional development and parent teacher conferences.

"Then we can have four solid days of absolutely no interrupted education," said Tammy Vine, a Spanish teacher at East Sac Schools.

"We need to have professional and development for teachers so it's exclusive to them and then we just need to be able to teach," said Teresa Tigges, a study skills teacher at East Sac Schools.

On July 1, Iowa law is changing to allow school districts to base their schedules on hours versus the current requirement of 180 teaching days. The new law will consider a day worth 5.5 hours and require 1,080 instructional hours per year.

"What we want to do is have the same number of hours but have it at a higher quality because it's really guaranteed so to speak we're not going to duck around with this, this is teaching time and it's sacred," said Kevin Fiene, East Sac County Schools superintendent.

During a public forum on Monday, some parents expressed concern about finding day care and students staying alert for a longer school day.

Teachers who support the move said the four day schedule will only add a few more minutes to each high school period and they may change elementary schools schedules to have academic classes at the beginning of the day and art and physical education classes near the end.

"I'd have more time to make sure that my project is done correctly and we would have more time in school so it's more time to ask the teachers for help," said Kayla Deal, a junior at East Sac Schools.
