Will talk to Mamata if necessary: Pranab

UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee has time and again sent feelers to Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee to back him.

Kolkata: UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee, who has time and again sent feelers to Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee to back him, on Saturday said there was no scope of meeting her now, though he would speak to her on the presidential polls if the need arose.

Returning to the city after a day`s visit to his village Mirati in Birbhum district, Mukherjee said it was not possible now to speak to Banerjee, who has so far stridently opposed his candidature for the top job.

"When it will be necessary, I will definitely talk to her," Mukherjee told media persons.

The Trinamool, second largest constituent of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), is yet to announce its stand on the Presidential choice after its preferred candidate, former president APJ Abdul Kalam, declined to contest.
Mukherjee is pitted against former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A Sangma, who has the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as also the AIADMK and the Biju Janata Dal.
