Overview

For 2015 as a whole, the 3.5 per cent return on investment in oil was the lowest since ONS records began in 1997. This clearly indicates the need now more than ever to reduce cost across the industry and one way of achieving this is rethinking the design of oil and gas equipment.

With this in mind, Low Cost Design is an unmissable two-day event that will focus on the latest new design strategies in engineering across the oil and gas industry, enhanced by first hand case studies from operators, engineering design companies and contractors.

Andrew Stokes: Managing Director, Augmentias Offshore and Maritime Engineering

Andrew Stokes is the Managing Director of Augmentias Offshore and Maritime Engineering, who previously spent twelve years in the civil construction and highways sectors.

Declan Fahy: Senior Process Engineer, Crondall Energy

Declan Fahy is a Senior Process Engineer at Crondall energy Consultants, where he is involved with the technical and commercial aspects of field developments using floating production systems. He has more than 10 years’ experience of project delivery in the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry, covering conceptual and technical studies, FEED, EPC and commissioning, having previously worked for Bechtel, Jacobs and Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies. Declan is a chartered engineer, Member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers and has a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering with Biochemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham.

David Simpson: Asset Integrity Engineer, Penspen

David Simpson is an Integrity Engineer at Penspen. Having graduated with an undergraduate masters degree in physics in 2012, he has been with Penspen for three years. He has experience with finite element modelling and stress analysis, defect assessment, span analysis and geotechnical assessment. Over the last two years, he has been heavily involved with a high temperature, high pressure, onshore, stainless steel pipeline design.

Matt Straw: Managing Director, Norton Straw Consultants

Dr Matt Straw is Managing Director of Norton Straw Consultants, a first-principles engineering and technology consultancy that aids product and system design and operation across a range of industries. Matt has been involved in flow and structural engineering simulation technology for 20 years and most of this has been spent working in the oil and gas industry. He has been technical lead relating to a wide range of design and operational challenges involving fluid-structure interaction, flow assurance and process performance for many major offshore developments. Matt holds engineering degrees and a PhD in computational fluid dynamics development from The University of Nottingham.

Brian Mercer: Managing Director, Theon Ltd.

Brian Mercer is the Managing Director of Theon Ltd, an Oil and Gas Engineering Consultancy. He has 30 years’ professional experience covering oil and gas, Aeronautical Engineering, Project and Programme Management, Operations and Maintenance Management and Asset Integrity. He has run a number of organisations and businesses covering: Brownfield Projects and Modifications: Asset Integrity; Oil and Gas engineering consultancies; aircraft engineering, maintenance, operations and projects; engineering training. He has managed projects and project portfolios in excess of £200 Million. He is a chartered engineer with a Bachelor’s degree from Heriot-Watt University and a Master’s degree from Kings College London.

Ben Eastwood: Process Engineer, Costain

Ben Eastwood is a Process Engineer who works at Costain, Manchester, UK. Ben has experience of working on a variety of projects at various stages of design including; Pre-feasibility, Front End and Detailed Engineering Design as well as undertaking secondments in Project Engineering and Commissioning. He has spent three years with Costain, focusing mainly on gas processing and holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Manchester. He has recently completed Costain’s Graduate Development Program, is an Associate Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and is currently working towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Simon Rees: Projects Director, Norton Straw Consultants

Dr Simon Rees is the Projects Director for Norton Straw Consultants, and has been providing technical advice to the energy sector for almost 20 years. After completing a PhD in fluid dynamics at the University of Leeds, Dr Rees spent four years in the glass industry in St Helens before moving to consultancy, where he has remained ever since. During that time he has worked extensively in the nuclear, renewable and oil and gas sectors, providing detailed technical assessments, safety case support, and management advice to major projects. Currently he is working on new project development and costing techniques to reduce the risks in marginal oil and gas fields. He is a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and Chair of the IMechE Offshore & Upstream Engineering Committee.

Mick Cubitt: NUI Support Supervisor, Shell

John Richardson: Subsea Systems Engineer, OneSubsea

John Richardson is a field development engineer who has worked at OneSubsea for many years in various engineering groups and locations. His experience in field development ranges from large greenfield projects to smaller, marginal fields seeking to extend production life. John plays a central role in a changing industry: where traditional field development engineering models are being discarded and new ways of thinking are being adopted. He has practical experience of how technology can be used to enhance asset performance, and how essential that is in a low oil price environment. John was educated at the University of Leeds where he gained a Master's Degree in Mechanical engineering.

Gilonne Traub: Process & Proposals Engineer, Zeta-pdm

Gilonne Traub is a qualified Chemical Engineer with over 10 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. In her last five years as a process and proposal engineer at Zeta-pdm; a specialist technology supplier to the oil and gas industry; Gilonne focused predominantly on the optimization and recommendation of oil, gas and water separation solutions to their existing and prospective clients globally. Gilonne graduated with an MSC in Advanced Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2003.

Chris Freeman: Partner and Director of Field Development, io oil & gas consulting

Dr Chris Freeman is a Partner and Director Field Development at io oil & gas consulting. Chris has over 33 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, and is an entrepreneurial and experienced upstream executive with proven technical and commercial knowledge. He began his career as a Petroleum Reservoir Engineer with BG Group, during which time he also served as a Director at SPE. Chris later joined LAMSO as a Business Development Director, before becoming the first CEO of LOGIC (a high profile joint industry and government initiative in the UK). Chris was also MD of Catalyst Energy Advisers LLP and founder / Managing Partner of Prosperous Energy Ltd. Over the course of his career, Chris has managed a wide variety of major projects, where he has provided strategic management advice to senior executives. He also has a successful track record of managing operations and major projects in difficult locations such as Russia, Algeria and Libya.

Sarah Wilford: GCD Environmental and Social Lead Advisor, Upstream HSE, BP

Tom Fuggle: Business Development Director, Permasense

Tom Fuggle has a successful engineering track record in the Oil & Gas sector and was previously Director of Business Development at global energy solutions provider Dresser-Rand, where he led many of the company's large project developments in EMEA in the oil and gas sector. Prior to this he was Managing Director of Engineering and General Equipment and Group Products Director at Alfa Laval, where he also led university research in non-invasive, real-time condition monitoring. Tom earlier held project management and project design positions with various consultants and contractors. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University and an MBA from The Open University.

Steve Wheeler: Development Manager – Special Projects, iNPIPE Products

Steve Wheeler is currently running an engineering project management group within the well-established pipeline isolation and Maintenance company iNPIPE Products (international pipeline products limited). The primary focus of this group is developing and delivering unconventional pigging solutions to the Oil and Gas industry. Underpinned by his previous experience with ice pigging as an employee at Royal Dutch Shell. Steve, passionate about innovation believing that the way to stimulate progress is through disruptive technology implementation. Having an education background in engineering and several year’s practical experience working offshore, with varying degrees of success at being both an entrepreneur and intrapreneur.

Graham Dalzell: Independent Consultant, TBS3

Graham Dalzell studied mechanical engineering at Queens Belfast under the great Professor, later Sir Bernard Crossland. Their paths diverged but crossed again with their shared dedication to the prevention of major accidents; Piper Alpha and the Kings Cross fire respectively. Graham was leading on fire engineering in BP at the time, helping to guide them and the industry through the change to the Safety Case culture. Helping to develop and implement the Prevention of Fire and Explosion Regulations; taking the lessons from the North Sea to BP’s operations worldwide, his interest broadened into the holistic management of major accidents leading to BP’s inherently Safer Design initiative. For the last 12 years, he has worked independently assessing on and offshore facilities in Australia, Trinidad, Iraq and Norway. He’s now semi-retired helping the EU and OECD with their Severso and Chemical Accident Preparedness programmes.
