Climate Strike: Petition to the Vice-Chancellors of Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Manchester, and University of Salford
We the undersigned support the aims of the school climate strikers, and we wish to support staff and students at Manchester universities who wish to participate in the Global Climate Strike on 20th September 2019. We are inspired by the actions of the striking school students, who have asked for adults to join them on this date. Serious action on climate crisis cannot come too soon – we believe that the strikes are an important part of a growing climate movement that can force governments and corporations to act now to mitigate against climate disaster.
Many of the school strikers will be applying to universities within the next few years – it would send a powerful message to them if the universities in Manchester supported their actions by encouraging staff and students to join them. Conversely, it would send a very negative message if universities were to stand by and ignore their call. We ask that you support our aims by making a commitment not to discipline any member of staff or student who joins the climate strike on 20th September. Better still, you could authorise time off for staff and encourage staff and students to join the climate strike.
This petition has been organised by Manchester HE Climate Strikers, a group of people who work or study at Manchester universities who want to build support for the climate strike amongst staff and students.
