Newsroom 101 application (2016)
Newsroom 101 is an award-winning program for high school students presented by The Oklahoman. The program is for students who are interested in journalism and would like to produce stories, photos, videos and more for a newspaper and website.
The program is free and meets weekly for 11 weeks.

Students compete for awards and scholarships. Participants are selected by a committee from the newspaper and will be notified by text message and email.

Participant Requirements:

Freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors or the home-school equivalent are eligible.
Class members may not have more than three unexcused absences.
Students must complete at least one project for print or online publication.
A photo ID of any kind, such as a student ID, passport or a driver’s license or permit.

The program begins Jan. 16 and runs every Saturday -- besides March 12 and March 19 -- until April 16. Each class period is from 9 a.m. to noon at The Oklahoman building in Oklahoma City. An opening reception will be Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. (location TBD). There is a closing reception in early May. (Date and location TBD).

The application deadline is Dec. 1. Students will be notified via text message and email by Dec. 8 if they've been accepted into the program.

Ideas can include but are not limited to the following story formats: 1. A story idea that you would write. 2. A photojournalism essay you would produce that tells a story of a person, group or organization. 3. A personal essay/column (only an option for high school juniors or seniors, at the discretion of the program director). Each idea should include at least three people you would interview.
If you have published work, please post links to no more than four examples of your published work below.
Acceptable submissions include stories, photographs, graphics, cartoons, page layouts, website designs, videos, podcasts and any other material you think aptly shows your skills. If you do not have links to your work, you can e-mail work to carrie.coppernoll@gmail.com. Your work must be submitted no later than Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. to be considered part of your application. This is not a requirement for your application but rather a way for the Newsroom 101 program team to understand your level of experience.
