Iconic Martini livery makes F1 return with Williams

Williams has revealed its official livery for the 2014 Formula 1 season, as it brings the iconic Martini colours back to the sport.

Confirmation of the new title title sponsorship deal on Thursday follows weeks of speculation. The team used its heritage blue colour scheme at the opening three winter tests.

The "multi-year agreement" will see the team race under the "Williams Martini Racing" banner and the Mercedes-powered FW36 sport the brand's famous blue and red stripes. Doesn't it look brilliant.

Martini has sponsored teams in a number of different motorsport forms and its association with Formula 1 started with the short-lived Tecno team for the 1972 season.

The brand returned to the sport in 1975 with the Brabham squad, achieving worldwide fame with its eye-catching livery, before moving to sponsor Lotus in 1979. More recently, it was a minor sponsor of Ferrari between 2006 and 2008.

"We are thrilled to welcome Martini to the Williams family and officially launch Williams Martini Racing," said team principal and founder Frank Williams. "Williams and Martini share a rich history in the world of motorsport, and the values of our two brands and our shared passion for racing make this partnership a natural fit. It will be great to see the distinctive stripes of Martini Racing return to Formula 1 once again in unison with Williams.

"2014 is going to be a fascinating season, with regulation changes of this scale often shaking up the grid and creating opportunities for teams to make a good step forward. Over the winter we have proved our ambition by making a number of positive changes; we welcome a new driver pairing, new senior technical personnel, and a number of new commercial partners for 2014.

"In Martini we have a brand that shares a passion for motor racing and winning championships. This partnership is a milestone in our history and we look forward to working closely with Martini over the coming years."

The team's livery was officially unveiled at an event in London on Thursday, with former Ferrari racer Felipe Massa being joined by team-mate Valtteri Bottas, reserve driver Felipe Nasr and development driver Susie Wolff.

"The decision to partner with Williams was a natural one for us as it provides an unparalleled opportunity for the Martini brand to connect with consumers through one of their lifestyle passions, Formula 1 racing," said Andy Gibson, president of Martini's parent company Bacardi Global Brands.

"Martini will give consumers a taste of life in the fast lane, bringing a renewed sense of Italian style and glamour to the track and beyond. Williams Martini Raing provides a powerful, integrated marketing platform and delivers dynamic opportunities that will strengthen the Martini brand."

It is certainly another big step in the right direction for the Grove-based outfit following a dismal 2013 season. The team has a strong driver line-up, new and highly respected team members, a car that looked fast and reliable in winter testing, new partners and now an iconic title sponsor.

I'm certainly expecting big things from the team in 2014 and I think the new livery looks fantastic. What do you think? Let me know on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
