Friday 17th Aug 2018,

It's August so this one is on the fly. More than anything I want to wish you a happy Serendipity Day tomorrow, 18th August.

With that in mind I hope this email jogs something that brings some synchronicity and serendipity.

I'm in Buenos Aires until October. So it is cold here but just like the summer it gives a bit of time and space to mull things over and find new directions.

In one of those musings I have been going through old video footage and in the next month will be posting some more of the video work I have been making for the operas of Oscar Edelstein.

You can find one short clip here which was one of eight short videos made for the site specific opera "La Carta Imaginaria" (The Imaginary Letter). It is a rant against injustice so though four years old has a resonance today.

As I said this is on the fly so over and out. Any questions or responses are always welcome.

If you are traveling I hope you get to do it in style. I'd love to be able to travel in shoes like in the picture that I found in my files of an early morning in transit at Madrid airport - but it never quite works out that way.!

Here is to your wildest intuitions and creative inspirations. Anyway I can help, shoot me an email.

Best wishes,

Deborah Claire Procter

Listen Up

I've just discovered an art blogger called Fran Meneses. She is an illustrator who uses Patreon and makes weekly videos for her subscribers. Here she talks about the problem of copycats and art theft. If you are short for time listen on 1.25 or 1.50 to speed up the speech. She makes clear points and serve as useful reminders of the key issues.

I’ve always had a secret love of lettering ever since my parents bought me those A5 landscape books calligraphy books to improve my handwriting. Now I have developed that bad habit of buying fonts bundles that I probably don’t really need.

If you too want to combine a love of lettering, experimental design, and music, then acclaimed designer and letterer Erik Marinovich has a quick class combining lettering, imagery and your favourite song!

Erik Marinovich is a San Francisco based lettering artist and designer, and is a co-founder of Friends of Type. Since 2009 he has drawn letters, logos and type for nice folks like: Nike, Target, Google, Hilton, Facebook, Sonos, Sharpie, The Criterion Collection, Air Canada, Gap, Ford Motor Company. In 2012 he co-founded Title Case, a creative work space that conducts workshops and lectures.

Inspired by one of his favourite personal projects, Erik shares his step-by-step process for combining hand lettering and iPhone photos to create album artwork. From an outdoor photo excursion to experimenting with every tool you own to create unique lettering, you’ll immerse yourself in music to create one-of-a-kind artwork that’s totally your own. You learn how to:

  • Use mind mapping to push your creativity
  • Take unexpected photos in your neighbourhood
  • Create expressive lettering with tools you already own
  • Edit your images to create a final piece
This class is hosted by Skillshare. Clear Insight is an affiliate which means we have a link that gives you unlimited classes for two months absolutely free if you register. Cancel before the time is out and it costs you nothing. Meantime we get $10 so it is a fantastic support for ongoing projects. I took to beloved Wikipedia to remember the roots of the word "graftfiti" -Etymology: Both "graffiti" and its occasional singular form "graffito" are from the Italian word graffiato ("scratched"). "Graffiti" is applied in art history to works of art produced by scratching a design into a surface. A related term is "sgraffito", which involves scratching through one layer of pigment to reveal another beneath it. This technique was primarily used by potters who would glaze their wares and then scratch a design into it. In ancient times graffiti were carved on walls with a sharp object, although sometimes chalk or coal were used. The word originates from Greek γράφειν—graphein—meaning "to write". (Wikipedia)

Don't know about you, but I couldn't live a day without Wikipedia. Okay we all know that  on some very contraversial topics then it's value breaks down but on quick date check it is invaluable. So it's worth bearing them in mind when you next thing of supporting a good cause.

What motivates this newsletter?

This newsletter is all about skim readable material for people who used to like to stare at coffee shop notice boards well before the internet existed and was started a year ago as a small corner to share contemporary cultural news.

Hope you enjoy it and that it builds as time goes on from the 2.5K subscribers. Of course, all feedback gratefully received. There is sometimes a geographical bias towards the UK where I am from but I try to balance with things that have a wider reach.

Recommendation; “Like so many human inventions the World Wide Web is both a curse and a blessing. I am working at my desk and a stranger introduces me to Ruben Jaurez, quite possibly one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. An unexpected gift that has added a new colour to my living.” Richard, Festival Artistic Director
