in addition to providing affordable and responsive higher education to thousands of Pennsylvanians every year.
Community College KEYS Program Helps Single Parents Succeed
Butler County Community College interviewed single parents participating in the KEYS Program to learn how the program has helped transform their lives. Please watch the video to learn more about how this PA Department of Human Services program allows single parents on cash assistance to meet federal work requirements by enrolling in one of PA’s 14 community colleges.
Colleges Respond to Opioid Crisis
With 156 confirmed overdose deaths in Luzerne County last year and fatal overdoses on the rise statewide, Luzerne County Community College has responded by developing a program designed to prepare students for work in the drug and alcohol recovery field. The diploma will be especially useful for students who want to become certified recovery specialists.
Students in Recovery Learn They Can Succeed at College
Montgomery County Community College recently honored 20 graduates of the college’s Partnership on Work Enrichment and Readiness program, or POWER. The free POWER Program helps individuals in mental health and substance abuse recovery successfully develop and reach their education and career goals.
New Series of "Hope is Dope" Classes Begin in April at BC3
The "Hope is Dope" classes at Butler County Community College are open to those in opioid recovery, family or friends of those who suffer from opioid addiction, support group personnel, treatment providers, educators or concerned community members. Using science and easily understood analogies, this class provides insights into an alternative treatment plan that offers a clear pathway to recovery.

In a recent PennLive column , Nancy Eshelman profiles HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College , President John J. Sygielski, Ed.D. – better known by students and faculty as “Ski”. The column touches on the great things going on at HACC, Ski's background and pastimes, challenges facing higher education and the future of an institution that has more than 18,000 students currently seeking degrees and an additional 7,700 workforce development students.
College Makes Life-Saving Narcan Available on Campus
Narcan nasal spray, an opioid reversal medicine, is now available to the public and included in automated external defibrillator cabinets on Delaware County Community College campuses, enabling anyone who is nearby an overdose victim to potentially save their life. Delaware County Community College is the first college campus in Delaware County that the Heroin Task Force has partnered with to provide Narcan for their AED cabinets.
