Sheffield Wednesday are thought to be keen on Cheltenham Town defender Will Boyle.

The 25-year-old Yorkshireman is likely to miss the rest of the season through injury, but the Owls could come in for him this summer.

They have been monitoring him regularly this season and watched him again during Cheltenham's 4-0 home win over Tranmere Rovers on Good Friday, which was his first appearance since damaging a knee ligament in February.

Boyle scored the Robins' second against their promotion rivals, turning in a low drive from Callum Wright in the 14th minute to mark his return to action with a goal.

He followed that up with the equaliser at Grimsby Town in Easter Monday's 1-1 draw, heading in a Ben Tozer throw-in after 34 minutes to cancel out Lenell John-Lewis' eighth-minute opener for the Mariners.

Boyle landed awkwardly on the same knee in the closing stages at Blundell Park, ruling him out of action for another six weeks and Michael Duff confirmed after Saturday's 1-0 home win over Leyton Orient that Boyle will be sidelined for the remaining six matches of the campaign.

"It just needs time, probably about six weeks like it was before," Duff said.

"It's not because he came back too early, he's landed on it in the last minute, really awkwardly so he's in a brace and hopefully he'll be back for the start of next season."

Boyle has been an influential figure during Cheltenham's improvement under Duff, playing on the left of the back three next to captain Tozer and Charlie Raglan.

He has chipped in with seven goals this season, beating his final tally of six from two seasons ago, largely thanks to Tozer's missiles into the box.

After picking up a calf injury at Orient on the opening day of last season, 6ft 3in Boyle had to be patient for much of the campaign due to the form of on-loan Hull City prospect Jacob Greaves, who has since broken into the Tigers' first team, who sit top of League One under ex-Robins midfielder Grant McCann.

Garforth-born Boyle is Cheltenham's longest-serving player, having arrived from Huddersfield Town in January 2017 after a loan spell at Kilmarnock.

He also appeared on loan for Kidderminster Harriers, Macclesfield Town and York City during his time at Huddersfield.

His contract at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium runs until the summer of 2022.

Wednesday, managed by Darren Moore, are facing relegation to League One for the first time since 2012, having been hit with a six-point points deduction this season for breaching financial regulations, reduced from an initial 12-point penalty.

They are seven points from safety with six matches left to play, starting with a home fixture against Swansea City on Tuesday (6pm).

League Two leaders Cheltenham's next match against Crawley Town has been brought forward to Friday evening at 6.30pm to avoid a clash with the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon.
