Welcome to issue 2 of Early Childhood Ireland’s Early Pedagogy Times ezine!

This issue for you to browse, watch and read at your leisure, contains an article from New Zealand discussing relationships, resources to share with parents, and we look through our online archive sharing Dr. Mary Roche’s Scéalta blog post on the joy of books and stories.

“Why I adore this profession. Because at our core, we are human. Because we teach with our hearts and live with our souls. We seek out and need connection to sustain our wellbeing and contribute to that of others.”

In this article we hear Bobbi-Jo Burkitt, Childspace, New Zealand, share her insightful feelings towards the introduction of lockdown in her country. She delves into relationships and what she believed this ‘lockdown’ meant for her practice and the relationships within it.

“I do it for the children that give love and laughter so effortlessly. I do it for the moments you can connect with families and share a story and a laugh. And I do it for the teachers that show up every day and give so much of their energy and life so freely. I do it because I see the importance of connectedness and relationships.”

If you were told that you could improve your child’s imagination, thinking ability, vocabulary, oral language, literacy skills, interpersonal relationships, empathy, attachment, and have great fun at the same time, you would rush to sign up for such an amazing programme.

Imagine if you were told that you can do it yourself and it’s free? So, ‘what is this magic and where can I get some?’, you would ask.

We are delighted to share some video resources developed by Early Childhood Ireland for parents as part of Let’s Play Ireland, a government-led initiative aimed at promoting play for all children living in Ireland during the COVID-19 emergency.

These videos aim to inspire families to discover the learning and play that can take place at home, indoors and outdoors. These provocations encourage families to use the home environment and to open up new opportunities to children, focusing on the process and not the end result.

Like many Early Learning and Care settings during this necessary period of “Stay at home”, the dedicated managers and teams of Daisy Chain Montessori and Creche were missing all the children whom they normally care for on a daily basis. The managers and teams wanted to stay connected to the children and also wanted to support their parents, many of whom are working from home. So, through Zoom meetings and WhatsApp groups, they explored together how they could go about this in a practical way and came up with the many creative and innovate ideas in this diagram.

The teams had live story time and shared many ideas for art activities, song and scavenger hunts. They also created a story booklet about “When we all had to stay at home” and included images familiar to the children. A second story booklet was created for children due to start “Big School” in September. This explained how they would come to creche for breakfast before leaving for school. Images included children crossing the road to the gates of the school, and the principle of the school. Another image showed the children where to wait in the school yard to be collected each day to return to creche.

The nature walk activity encouraged the children to explore in their gardens or when out on walks with their parents and the team also wrote a story for one boy who was finding it really hard to understand why he was not going to creche.
