ALP preference 'shock'

The people of Melbourne will be shocked to learn Victorian Labor will preference Family First ahead of the Greens in the state seat's upcoming byelection, Greens leader Christine Milne says.

The Labor Party had decided to prefer a party of climate deniers and one that opposed marriage equality, she said.

''I think the people of Melbourne will be shocked,'' Senator Milne said.

''This sends shivers down the spines of all the people in the Labor Party who watched this happen in 2004 when Labor in Victoria saw Steve Fielding and Family First elected to the Federal Parliament.''

Melbourne voters will go to the polls on July 21 to elect a new state MP to replace Labor veteran Bronwyn Pike.
