Campbell Wells Fargo Bank Robbed By 2 Armed, Masked Men

Two armed men wearing caps and masks robbed a crowded bank in Campbell on Tuesday before fleeing in a stolen car that police later found a short distance away, a police sergeant said.

The robbery was reported at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Bank at 1790 S. Bascom Ave., where two suspects with handguns, gray beanies and black masks ordered employees and customers to the ground, Sgt. Dave Berg said.

More than 25 employees and customers were inside the bank at the time of the robbery, police said.

"It did feel like something out of a movie," said Tim Wenzel, a customer who was inside of the bank during the robbery. "I was directly under the teller counter at the time trying to stay still and as calm as possible."

Police said the suspects also used a police scanner while in the bank to monitor police traffic.

The gunmen directed bank employees to turn over cash and then fled to the parking lot into a dark-colored Honda driven by a third suspect.

"The thing that sticks out in my mind is that the last robber to leave said, 'have a nice day,' which I thought was weird," Wenzel said.

Police located the stolen car less than a quarter-mile away from the bank but could not find the suspects, who may have driven away in a second vehicle, Berg said.

"We don't have many bank robberies in Campbell, especially these kinds of takeover robberies," Berg said. "It is quite out of the ordinary. It causes us concern."

Campbell police detectives are investigating the robbery and are examining surveillance video taken by the bank, he said.
