School bus hits turkey, smashing windshield and injuring 3-year-old

A school bus struck a turkey about 11:35 a.m. Thursday, May 23, in Tuscola County, causing a minor injury to a 3-year-old on the bus, police said.

VASSAR TOWNSHIP, MI — A school bus carrying students struck a turkey, smashing the vehicle's windshield and causing minor injuries to a child on the bus, the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department reports.

About 11:35 a.m. Thursday, May 22, a Tuscola County Intermediate School District bus was northbound on M-15 near Ormes in Vassar Township when a turkey flew into its path and struck the windshield, Tuscola County Undersheriff Glen Skrent said.

A 3-year-old on the bus received minor injuries of cuts on his head from the glass of the broken windshield. The child was treated and released, Skrent said.

The bus was inoperable after the crash, Skrent said, and children on the bus had to board another bus. The damaged bus was towed, Skrent.

Skrent said the county sees "a couple (accidents) every spring" involving turkeys. He said there was no citation issued, calling it an "act of God" type of accident.
