Rules of Friendship

Rate this book
Friends-to-Lovers Standalone Romance Novel

As a guy, the number one rule to being best friends with a girl should be simple…

Never, and I do mean never, fall in love with her.
Oh and you should never fantasize about her either.

Believe me, that situation can get messy really fast and leave you with nothing but one hell of an awkward mess on your hands—literally.

Reese and I have been through everything together; our bond is deep. But I am going down fast, and I fear there is no way to stop it. I spend most of my time hiding my body’s reaction to her because like I said: just friends.

But things are changing. We are changing.

I no longer see her as just Reese, my best friend. When I look at her now, I see a gorgeous woman that takes my breath away. I see my future. But what if she doesn’t see me the same way?

I can’t risk losing her…

The fear of screwing everything up is excruciating. So that’s why I have chosen to stick to the rules. The Rules of Friendship that is.

She was off limits. Plain and simple.

Favorite Quotes:

I’ve known her since I was two. At one point in our lives we took baths together. What I wouldn’t give to take a bath together now.

We made a pact when we were ten… with spit and everything.

I never thought I’d be walking in on a jerking session with you stroking your prized pony.

It’s like seeing a two-headed snake or a purple elephant.

Oh please! She would so choose me over you. Chicks before dicks, you know.

My Review:

Written in my favorite dual POV, I enjoyed this quick and lively NA read featuring life-long childhood friends finally stepping up and taking the risk to be - more. Dawson was a modern-day sexy white knight type who worked for fire and rescue while sharing an apartment with female veterinary student Reese, who had been his best friend since the age of two. Their friendship turned relationship was fun and lively with easy teasing and playful banter and was only in the initial stages of “more,” which included a little bit of steamy sensuality when in the process of assisting someone else the perfect Dawson took a brief tour to the Land of Moron.

That hero gene can certainly make for a mess, but so can being excessively stubborn and angsty – which was extremely ugly and led to despair and heartbreak all around. I could have done with far less of the doleful and dismal but thankfully the sun returned the sky and despite Reese’s extended stay in the town of Butt-Hurt & Mulish Obstinance, and Dawson’s brief penchant for bending the truth - their world righted itself and Dawson was once again the thoughtful and perfect BBF. I really liked Dawson, despite his Pinocchio nose.

Get ready to swoon over Dawson!! Gah! I absolutely LOVED his character!!!

Right off the bat, I was hooked to this storyline because CA Harms developed the emotional angst perfectly. I needed Dawson and Reese to come clean about their feelings towards each other. I NEEDED it. Sure, they had been best friends since they were little, but I needed them to get over their fear and go for it. The angst was amazing, though!!

I found myself talking to my Kindle (seriously!), telling Dawson to just "TELL HER" or telling Reese to "KISS HIM! Do IT!" LOL!! The way that Dawson was always there for Reese really did make my heart swoon. He always knew when she needed him the most and he dropped anything and everything for her. I'm telling you, Dawson is seriously something else. Top Book Boyfriend material FOR SURE.

Reese did make me angry during the book, though, but not because her actions were uncalled for, but because I was SO #TeamDawson, that in my heart, I was ready for her to forgive him.

If you are a fan of friends-to-lovers romances, then you *must* read Rules of Friendship. CA Harms did not disappoint and once more, she delivered an amazing, addictive read. And let me tell ya, that ending had my heart doing cartwheels! FIVE STARS.

Editing!

Lawd!, where has the editing gone?
Two pet peeves of mine.
I don't know how this word became the norm, but, 'gonna' has to go! It seems to have become a staple for authors, where using 'going to' is apparently to classy?
'Instantly', this word is unnecessary in describing a characters movements. We know they didn't wait a week, or even five minutes to complete the motion , thought, or idea that they were beginning. It's always overused.
The characters, I would have loved to have seen more of who they are apart from the time they spent pining or mooning over each other. Maybe something from their childhood, or time spent outside of the apartment. Something to establish personalities.
Reese, she was ok. Maybe a little to much time spent tearing up. She was right to be pissed at Dawson. And dude, you never give your female friends graphic details of your sex life! Or bring 'friends' over to make out with if you want the girl.
Dawson, he was an idiot. His first thought upon seeing his ex is whether he could still love her?! But we are expected to believe that he loved Reese? And his ex, she was a big girl who could have handled her own business. If you are pining over someone, you generally don't bed hop either. I wanted different dialogue from him, he spent all of his time with the same love her, she completes me thoughts.
The Vet thing, someone a year out of school is not going to be able to open their own clinic.
You all are probably reading this wondering why I didn't give it fewer stars with my lashing review. I did like the concept of the story, and parts were engaging, I just wished for more from one of my favorite author's.

They are friends since childhood. But now suddenly they are horny for each other. But this doesn’t stop our H from kissing other girls.
And also there’s this Ow drama, so I’m dropping this.

5 Stars.....

I Can't believe this is my first C.A. Harms book! I've a few on my TBR but this came my way recently and after reading the blurb I knew I'd read it ASAP. Best friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes of romance. That said, this is one of my favorite reads of this year!

Let's face it, most of us know in the first chapter whether or not a book will be a 5 star rating. For me this book was one of those. The writing was so smooth, the tension and angst was palpable and the wit and humor all contributed to my love of this story. I wanted to devour it. I wanted to read uninterrupted; that did not happen. I was in the middle of preparing for vacation so there were many times I had to put my Kindle down. Those times drove me insane with impatience and frustration. However, at around 60% I was on a plane and it was late at night. I had the perfect reading atmosphere. And yes, I devoured that last 40% only to hate myself for reading so fast. This amazing, story was over and I missed Dawson and Reese. The good thing...? I have just added this author to my favorites list and there are many books available that I can read. Yeah, me!

Dawson and Reese.....
These are two characters that are so personable and loyal. In addition, they watch out for each other. There is nothing Reese and Dawson wouldn't do for the other. They have so much respect and love for each other. A love that was so strong as friendship, turned into a love so all consuming when they finally admitted their true feelings for one another. Really, I could go on and on but I won't. I will tell you that the story is not rushed, there is a good amount of angst, a loyal and witty cast of characters and hero that you will love beyond. Total book boyfriend!

One more aspect I'd like to add is that this book is written in first-person dual perspectives. This made for an even more enjoyable read. Again, this is a top recommendation from me. A must read!

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)

So I have to mention this one small thing about the cover and then I’ll dive into my review, bear with me. My husband came across this book while I was reading it and he asked my why the chick was grabbing the guys stuff in the photo. I didn’t understand until I really went back and looked at the photo. It really does look like she’s preparing to relieve him with her front hand... right in front of his jeans. I never noticed until it was pointed out and now, I can’t unsee it. Please, someone else tell me you see this?!? I should mention that it doesn’t even bother me. It’s a beautiful cover with great colors. I just giggled like an 11 year old boy.... I apologize.

I love this genre! There’s seriously something wonderful about friends getting together. They already have this mutual respect and friendship that’s, hopefully strong. Dawson was every woman’s fantasy. I mean... a firefighter? Sign me up!! Plus he says the swooniest things! Reese didn’t stand a chance! Even with her feisty attitude, Dawson is head over heels for her. I just love how they’ve both been secretly thinking about the author.

I seriously enjoyed the fun and easy way Reese and Dawson had together. Theirs friendship was deep, and oh so sweet. The chemistry and friendship CA Harms created seemed so pure, so sweet. I was a bit bugged by Dawson’s out-of-character stupidity. He was really created as this sweet and caring guy that took great care to be a friend Reese needed. But then, he just changed... and it bugged me a bit. At the same time, I can get some of it. They are still young. Even with that little nuance, I’d totally recommend this story! It was written well with deep and. Ms. Harms is so creative and her characters are so real with their fun and banter.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

*ARC*

Rules Of Friendship was just what I was needing to read when I picked this one up. I love a good friend to lover’s romance, especially when the characters are best friends and both feel more than friendship feelings towards the other person. I have said it before and I will say it again because I truly believe that if you have a friendship before dating it just strengthens your relationship, or maybe it is just the romantic side of me that hopes people love their best friend. Okay enough mushy stuff from me.
Reese and Dawson have been best friends all of their lives. The bond between them is something they never want to lose. Each want more than friendship, but of course they don’t voice those feelings because both think it would break their friendship and neither want that to ever happen. Both silently keep their feelings to themselves until they can’t deny their feelings any more. The chemistry between Reese and Dawson is hot and explosive.

When something happens, neither Reese nor Dawson handled the situation correctly. Is it is misunderstanding or is it something more? You know the drill, I am not going to spoil it for you so read the book to find out. I can understand both reactions but sometimes things aren’t always so clear at first, and that can do more damage than you think. Did I get frustrated with Reese at times? Yes, but not an overly big amount. I wanted her to stop and just listen instead of jumping to conclusions but then again, I wish Dawson would have tried harder as well.

I really liked Rules Of Friendship and hope we get books for Reese and Dawson’s friends. This is one that should be on your TBR list for sure!

Hmmmm....Where do I start? Obviously, just just by reading the title you can sorta figure out this is a story about friends. Best friends. Childhood friends.

Reese & Dawson were practically besties in the womb. They’re moms were best friends, so by default...you get the point. They’re so close, they even live together. Living with your “person” is awesome! Until it’s not...

Yeah, so when Dawson starts fantasizing about Reese and she about him (all on the DL) they have to hide their new feelings. Because friends can’t be lovers and then end and still be friends. Everyone knows that.

Eventually, seeing Reese with another guy gets Dawson so jealous he can’t NOT make his move. To saw Reese is surprised is an understatement, but she’s more than ready to give this new friendship a try.

*cue the fireworks*

Yep. Explosive. So freaking hot! The fireman and the vet student.

Of course, a books not a good book until you throw in a some drama and a whole lot of tension. You’ll find enough here, all keeping you on pins and needles until the end ;)

The ONLY thing that made me give this story 4 stars instead of 5 was....the mush. Far too much lovey dovey for me. It was all very repetitive and I found my self skipping those chats. All the rest, I really enjoyed!!!

It’s no secret C.A. Harms is one of my favorite authors. It doesn’t matter what she writes, she manages to always create a story that completely captures me. Rules of Friendship grabbed me from the prologue and just kept pulling me in with every page! I’m not exaggerating when I say I devoured this book. I don’t think I even blinked while I was reading I was so hooked on Reese and Dawson!
These two best friends bring a whole new meaning to sexual tension. Both secretly in love with each other. Both terrified to reveal their feelings. The tension built between these two to the point I thought I was going to explode waiting to see what would come next! The build up was worth every bit of anticipation though because Reese and Dawson are absolutely soul mates.
I can’t even decide what I loved most about these two. When I say soul mates I mean it. They’re so deeply connected and so head over heels in love they will melt even the coldest of hearts. But even with the perfection they are together they still had hills to climb making for a book hooks you deep and doesn’t let you go!

I was pulled right into this story. This story contains love, laughs, heartbreak, secrets, and pain.

This is Reese and Dawson‘s story. Reese and Dawson have been best friends forever. But as the years have gone by they have both been slowly falling for each other. Feelings have changed from love to in love. But they are both afraid to shake the friendship up. So, they both stay silent. All the secret looks and hiding the attraction is about to come to head. But will these two be able to admit their feelings and be okay? There are still obstacles that they need to overcome to be together. Will they be able to build a future, or will they lose everything?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I highly recommend this book.

I devoured this book. I couldn't put it down. I just loved Dawson. He's such a caring friend to Reese and then it happens, they both start to develop feelings for one another but are scared to confront these feelings because so much is on the line. And Dawson, oh my word, a hot firefighter/rescuer who gives us lines like this "Reese is my rock. Could I live without her? Yes, but I never wanted to face that kind of darkness." Let's just say Dawson is pretty swoon worthy and Reese is a little spitfire who doesn't take anything from anyone.

Rules of Friendship is exactly like the titles says, except no one really follows this!
Dawson works for fire and rescue for LA. Reese and himself have been friends since they were basically born. Their moms we're best friends, so they always have been together.
Living together has started proving to be a little too much for Reese. She tries to see him in a best friend light but the temptation is slowly growing.
Obviously these two make a go at it. What you aren't anticipating in the drama that unfolds with it.
Lies, decite and friendship break down. It's not an easy road but it teaches you that friendship is the most important lesson.

Friends to lovers books are always a little iffy to me. I want my heroes to be all about their heroines after they've met. So when you have a man and a woman who are friends, but see other people even though they have feelings for each other. Yeah, it can be a hard sell for me.

That being said, this was one of the better ones. Harms has a way of immersing you into the story so that you feel what the characters are feeling. One of the reasons why I like her books so much and she's on the short list of my re-read authors.

The drama surrounding the ex seemed a bit gratuitous to me. I mean, they were best friends. He had to know that would be a hard limit for her. And the lying? Didn't he think she would know him well enough to tell if he's lying?

That crisis moment felt forced to me. The overall writing was good. For the most part, I enjoyed the story and Harms remains a favorite author, but I have to say this wasn't one of my favorites.

What happens when your in love with your best friend and they're clueless about how you feel. Or are they??

Reese and Dawson have shared alot over the years but the way they feel that's never been spoken about. I loved the concept of the story even if at times I was Infuriated with them. I found myself screaming ( in my head) at them to just talk to each other.

The deep bond they have for each other was easy to see, I liked that the author didn't go overboard with this but the reader see it unfold. I totally got why they were wary of change butt I was willing them to just the that chance.

I really liked both main characters they were relatable which is always a plus in my book. Another well written book from this author.

I really wanted to love this book. This author is one I’ve come to rely on for evocative storylines, complex and endearing characters, and a great mixture of humor, heat and emotion, so I was excited to read an early copy of this book. The friends to lovers premise appealed to me and I easily fell in love with both Dawson and Reese. They’ve been best friends forever, right into adulthood. He works as a firefighter and they share an apartment while Reese finishes up her veterinarian program. They share every aspect of their lives with each other and have been together through thick and thin, even when Dawson ended a two-year relationship with a woman he thought he was in love with.

My problem arose when Dawson was afflicted with a case of colossal stupidity. These two have been best friends since kindergarten and shared everything, and the one time it really matters, he’s not upfront and honest. Then he has the nerve to be mad at Reese and accuses her of being overly dramatic. Seriously? Any time a character does something so opposed to the personality the author has built, it significantly weakens them in my mind and makes it that much harder for me to like them. I get that we're all fallible and this is young adult, but I have little patience for self-sabotage as the crux of a conflict.

Otherwise, the story is phenomenal. It drew me in easily and I was halfway through it before I realized it. In spite of a couple technical inaccuracies that were easy enough to overlook by a willingness to suspend reality to a degree in the name of fiction, Reese and Dawson easily captivated me with their solid, lifelong friendship and comfortable ease with each other. Other than Dawson's brain cramp the fallout from it, I loved these characters and their story.

The friends-to-lovers relationship can be the hardest one to have. What happens when you go from "best friend zone" to "boyfriend/girlfriend zone"? What happens if the relationship doesn't pan out? Will you still be able to maintain your "best friend" relationship again? Will you ever be able to get back what you once had if the relationship fails?
Dawson and Reese have been best friends since they were children. Everyone, except Dawson and Reese, could see the love (and lust) they shared for each other...everyone knew they would become an item ... Oh, they dreamed and even fantasizes about being intimate with each other but they kept that hidden away from each other till one day it finally happened.
Will being in a relationship with each other change the dynamics of their friendship?? Reese thinks so, will Dawson?
This book sucks you in from page one and never lets you go till the final epilogue!! You too will fall in love with Dawson and Reese just like I have.

4.5 stars of pure sweet, perfection

It's like these two wear blinders. All that love is being isolated in the "laboratory" that is their friendship. Must quarantine the "friendship" keep those pesky "more" feelings far away. Only problem is...eventually they eat you up. Feelings get hurt. Needs change. And that friendship you cling to so hard...is missing something.

If C.A. Harms hadn't written this in both points of view, I'm sure this review would have had stabby hands and death threats. But don't worry folks, you get both sides of this story and with it the tension, lust, and heartache. Rules of Friendship is a perfect friends to lovers story complete with enough epilogues to keep you smiling and love to keep you floating on a happy cloud.

Hands down the friends to lovers book to end all!
Rules of Friendship was everything I hoped for and more. I adore friends to lovers an this one is my new favorite, I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting for Reese & Dawson to get their heads right an open their mouths!! Every page I turned I hoped would be the one where someone admitted their feelings. This book is chock full of sexual tension, denial and two of the most impressive best friends I can recall reading.
Loved it, read it in one sitting, I could not put it down without a resolution!
July 27, 2018
Dawson and Reese have been best friends since they were ten years old. They have been together through the rough and smooth... thick and thin..friends to the end.
They have their routines and friends but they always make time for each other.
But neither has been honest with each other, about how they actually feel... because if they poked at it too much it would mean taking a gamble which could ultimately end their friendship.

Great way to spend a few hours, this book is sweet and saucy with a great big dollop of feels.
The chemistry between Dawson and Reese was wonderful and I really enjoyed reading their inner termoil about wether they should reveal their feelings or not to the other person.... making a very entertaining read more enjoyable.

Friends to lovers romance with a swoonworthy hero who can’t stop thinking about his female best friend/roommate.

Not my favorite of C. A. Harms’s books, but a pretty good read. Dawson is definitely swoony but man is he dumb. Reese isn’t too smart herself. Even though they harbor secret feelings/fantasies for the other, they continue to deny and see other people. I am not a fan of OW drama. Sometimes it works if it is written just right, but I didn’t work for in this book.

The writing is great as per usual. The characters are likable and the friends to lovers things is great. I just couldn’t get over all the denial.

It will work for some and not others.

A story and friendship, deep love and risking the heart has unfolded here in the new novel from C.A. She writes about two people who have been friends since they were little kids and now living together with these feelings they do not want to act on. They have been through one another being with other people and listening to any and everything. Reese and Dawson are best friends and they are both feeling something different towards one another but do not know what to do about it. They don’t want to risk their friendship but sometimes there is no way you can fight what your heart wants. When Dawson can’t take it anymore and makes the first move he opens pandora’s box and gives Reese what she has always dreamed of. Reese is still gun shy because she doesn’t want to lose Dawson and that cause her to be more stubborn than warranted. Dawson’s ex-girlfriend comes back into the picture and Reese freaks out because in her head she thinks that was Dawson’s love of his life. When he lies to her about seeing the ex-girlfriend she runs and being the stubborn one she is, she makes both their lives miserable. She must get through the past that is clouding her judgement to find the real reason she is so set on destroying her relationship with Dawson.

I love a good friendship story and this one is full of laughter, love and heartache. When two people can be friends for a long time and finally realize they do not have to lose that part it’s a wonderful thing to read about. I loved Dawson because he was a fighter and knew he wanted Reese forever. Reese on the other hand I didn’t love because her stubbornness and overreaction was just too much to bear sometimes. I’m like get it together Reese, what is your problem. She was letting her insecurities rear their ugly heads throughout the book. Dawson more than made up for her character and still made me love the book. It’s a quick romance read and if you are looking for good friends to lover’s book then you came to the right book.

“Staring at his best friend thinking all types of dirty thoughts”

Dawson, as a gorgeous broad shouldered fireman and EMT, is everything I love about book boyfriends, and Rules of Friendship by CA Harms is everything I love about the contemporary romance genre.
He’s sharing a house, (and dirty thoughts) with his best friend Reese who is a vet student in College. They've been best friends since they were young, and what he doesn't know, is that she's been thinking of him too!

The writing is entertaining and the humour is lower key than the Oh, Tequila series, but I was compelled as always to grab every opportunity to read this book. Phones, tablets, aren’t we lucky reading is made more convenient than ever.

I loved the back and forth banter between Dawson and Reese. My favourite scene is where Dawson is going to the shop and Reece asks him to pick up tampons. Cue the horrified look of confusion from Dawson as he carefully explains the rules of shopping: "“the feminine hygiene area,” he air quotes the two words, “is, in fact, a forbidden zone for men.”” Reece has the best ever plan of revenge; to buy a bulk load of pads and stick them all over his room!!! This humerous interaction is enhanced by the added dynamic of sex and romance into their relationship.

Trouble is, the dynamic between them HAS changed things regardless, and when Reece catches Dawson out in a lie, she believes that not only did he not trust her with the truth, but a new level of insecurity previously unknown to her, makes her question not only his honesty, but everything about the sincerity of his relationship with her. Was she afterall, just one of many? Personally, I think she was a bit of a brat, buy hey, she’s still young, her best friend now lover is all kinds of sexy, and he has a varied history with women. Romance isn’t real life, and this was Reece’s drama.

I’ll read everything from this author, and Rules Of Friendship was a great read that I highly recommend. 4.5 Stars.

I swear to all that is holy that if the brilliant and so very addictive C.A. Harms ever stops writing, my world will end, as I'll NEVER EVER get enough of her epic stories no matter the topic. I'm a girl who likes a friends to lovers story, but after so many of them, I do tend to find them repetitive at times, however, Rules of Friendship hooked me from the get go, and I didn't even change positions until ever last word was devoured. See Reese and Dawson have been best friends since they were like 5 years old, but lately, they have been secretly catching feelings for each other, thinking the other isn't aware of the changes. It takes a bit of push & pull before they finally hook up, and I was so grateful since their chemistry was off the charts HOT from the start, and they definitely lit the sheets on fire! Of course things still changed even when they swore they wouldn't, and Dawson, no matter how close to perfection he was, is still a man who can't help having those clueless moments. So that added some serious drama that I didn't see coming, which even had me in depression for a minute or two. Luckily, the cast of secondaries were there to point out some things that needed to be said, making them add more depth to an already amazing story. And the list goes, humor, angst, drama, and serious hotness with a f-bomb worthy twist or two to tick off all the boxes. Plus, when I was finished with story, and upset because I needed more, Ms. Harms threw me bones with bonus scenes! I could read about these two for days on end, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

I love Dawson and Reese. The friendship between them was so strong; I could understand why they were both afraid to lose one another if a relationship between them didn’t work.
I liked Dawson but he did irritate me a little at times. He was ok with having other women around Reese, like Lisa and Renee yet he was jealous of any male around Reese. I thought that was a little hypocritical of him at times. That being said, the chemistry between Reese and Dawson was clear to see, the sexual tension between them was through the roof and I cheered when they both gave into their feelings for one another.
What I didn’t expect was for me to be hit right in the feels and be a little teary eyed. My heart ached for Reese anytime her mother was mentioned or when she spoke to her father. One good thing about Dawson making Reese run was her getting to spend the much needed time with her father and grow closer to him after he had been distant due to his grief. I really liked the epilogue for this story. I liked that Dawson and Reese had worked through their problems and Reese finally understood what was going on with Renee.
The storyline for this book is easy to follow and it is an enjoyable read.
