CLEVELAND, Ohio — Laura Siegel Larson flew into Cleveland to speak at today's opening of the exhibit honoring and her father and his famous creation, but unlike Superman, she flew in on a plane.

The permanent exhibit of Superman welcoming travelers to the city where he was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster opens at 6 p.m. today in Cleveland Hopkins International Airport's lower level near baggage claim.

Larson, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, other relatives of Siegel and Shuster are among speakers scheduled for the event, along with a performance by members of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.

The Superman exhibit was put together by the Siegel and Shuster Society, a group formed to honor the two Glenville boys who created a worldwide cultural icon in the midst of the Great Depression. Superman fans contributed about $50,000 to make the exhibit a reality.

Irving Fine, Jerry Siegel's cousin and a founding member of the Siegel and Shuster Society, is happy that the city is recognizing Superman as he approaches his 75th anniversary. Next summer marks 75 years since Siegel and Shuster's creation first appeared in "Action Comics" No. 1, heralding a worldwide comic book industry. A near perfect copy of that 10 cent comic sold last year for $2.1 million.

The unveiling of the display begins with a 5 p.m. meet-and-greet in the baggage claim area.

Both events are free and open to the public.
