Ouch that Hurt! The Neuroscience of Feedback in Coaching..

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”  Recent neurobiological research suggests that we are wired to react to interpersonal feedback in a way that can not only induce a sense of emotional hurt but elicit the same pathways as being physically in pain.  This presentation will present new research about the neurobiology of feedback –both giving and receiving that is important in coaching relationships. Participants will also learn about  the “tipping point” about just how much bullying and perceived negative feedback can interfere with individual health, team effectiveness, and positive relationships.  Participants will learn about the latest coaching research based on neuroscience to maximize motivation, goal setting and goal pursuit in coaching engagements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. LO1: Explain the association between emotional hurt/rejection and physical pain.
  2. LO2: Describe the two different neural pathways associated with compassion based versus solution based coaching.
  3. LO3: Identify three necessary conditions essential for successful individual behavior change over time.

Personality Strengths as Your Career Brand.

The Career Branding Exercise (CBE) is an innovative methodology designed to help people understand themselves and communicate their personal brand in simple accurate language. The model is based upon interpreting the Big Five Model from a strength psychology perspective. The goal of the exercise is to turn a personality strength into a professional distinction. By the end of the session, participants will write a memorable, meaningful and concise (seven word) statement that captures the essence of who they are. It is critical that participants experience the CBE and develop their own branding statement. Going through the process themselves will allow them to speak to clients from a first-person perspective.

Many clients need career coaching when selling themselves into new opportunities. The CBE is a simple effective tool that guides you to think accurately in self-discovery. The exercise helps people gain confidence and clarity when introducing themselves in business related settings. The CBE also helps clients prepare for important interviews and presentations by highlighting how they add strategic value to their business ecosystem.

The CBE has been used with our clients for the past two years with excellent results. This tool quickly and specifically helps people understand what their personality strength is and how it manifests when they peak perform. As one client shared with me recently “for the first time in 30 years when somebody asks me what I do, I have a perfect response”.
