Review: Magic Wand Unplugged (#MWRC)

The Cadillac of Vibrators. Now, unplugged. And not just unplugged, it’s got settings and patterns. And a silicone head. I wish my entire review could just be “Go buy one right now and if you don’t have one of the earlier iterations of the plug-in Magic Wand, then definitely go get one,” but that’s not enough for a review. What about if I tell you I’ve got Kermit flailing arms? No? Well, okay then. Let’s review.

Let me begin at the beginning, because I actually have stories around the Magic Wand. Get comfy, bring snacks.

Back in the Fall of 2011 when I was in San Francisco for my first semester of grad school, I was excited to finally get a chance to visit a Good Vibrations store. I visited it many times in that month. In fact, I continued to visit the little shop on Polk Street at least once every time I was in town. But that very first time was when I bought myself the Hitachi Magic Wand. Corded, powerful, and full of (feminist) history, I happily have had many delicious orgasms with it.

Fast forward about four months after I graduated. February 2014. I was back in San Francisco one weekend for a day-long (ish) conference and found myself in a situation where I wished I had packed my Hitachi. I could tell that I was on the precipice of some group sexy times. (They know who they are.) We were just about sitting down to some dinner after the Con, and it dawned on me. I could run up to Good Vibes on Polk and it might change the direction of the night. Let me tell you something, I don’t run anywhere. But you can bet your bottom I jogged the two blocks to Good Vibes, made a beeline for the Original Magic Wand (the name change had taken place by this time), and was ready to pay in a matter of minutes. The clerk commented how they appreciated someone who knew what they wanted, to which I explained, this could change my night. I jogged back to dinner and the rest is history.

Did you really think I was going to kiss-and-tell about my group sex? Come on now!

Okay, what I will divulge is that the night may have ended with the Original Magic Wand and me in, what I would call, a pretty successful fisting.

Hitachi-Original Magic Wand- Magic Wand Unplugged

Background to fore: MWRC, Original Magic Wand, Hitachi Magic Wand

Moving to the present, we’re here with the Magic Wand Rechargeable. As soon as I heard about this updated classic, I was on shpilkes waiting for a chance with it. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to review it for you!

As you probably are aware, the Original Magic Wand (and the Hitachi before it) had two speeds. High and higher. I’m being facetious, but seriously, it was intense. That definitely had pros and cons. For one thing, many people who used it, myself included, tended simply to stick to using the Magic Wand on the outside of our clothing, rather than right up against our bits; those who are more sensitive, a towel might be placed in between the Wand and the body to really diffuse the strength of the vibrations. For another, the head on the previous versions was PVC, which cannot be fully sanitized. Folks got creative around this too, by slapping a condom over the head, or using a silicone Pop Top

There are a few main changes in the new iteration of the Magic Wand. The first is quite obvious: It’s cordless and rechargeable! Now, you don’t have to worry whether the cord will reach the outlet. You don’t need to pack an extension cord for hotel stays. Or possibly move the beds around. In addition, the MWRC works when it’s plugged in. The best of both worlds!

The other change is, in my opinion, a Big Deal. No longer do you have to choose between high and higher. Or figure out ways to diffuse the intense vibrations. The MWRC has four steady settings and four patterns! Joy of joys! The low steady setting brings happy tears to my eyes. It’s delicious and I can place it straight against my vulva and it’s not too much. It’s rumbly on the lower two settings, a little buzzier on the upper two settings. The patterns incorporate lows and highs in their pulsations. (They’re serious business.) I really like the low-to-high wave-like teasing one.

Magic Wand RechargeableThe third big change is the silicone head. Earlier Magic Wands heads could never fully be cleaned or sanitized. This was problematic in terms of safer sex, sharing it with a partner, etc, but also because of staining. As I said above, a way to get around this was rolling a condom over the top. Effective and it’ll do in a pinch. The silicone head on the MWRC is a great upgrade because it can be cleaned carefully in the same ways you can clean other silicone toys, aside from boiling (obviously). If you’re planning on using it between partners (consecutively, before having a more thorough clean) you may consider the wrapping it in a condom for ease.

The Magic Wand Rechargeable does heat up a little bit, but not enough that it’s concerning. The biggest downside is it automatically shuts off after 20 minutes 1. It’s definitely annoying and can take you out of the moment, but you can just turn it back on again. It’s kind of a weird feature and I hope that if there’s a second generation, they’ll get rid of the auto-shut off.

What is it like to use the Magic Wand Rechargeable?

In a word, awesome. I always loved the my other Magic Wands,  but the added vibration levels and patterns, really made all the difference for me. I didn’t find myself numbing out quite as much or as quickly. It was temporary, but certainly a factor due to the high vibrations. Orgasms I had with MWRC were strong, deep, and felt amazing as ever. It’s a delightful change from more pinpointed, clit vibrators. The fact that it is cordless is certainly a nice perk, too. No more awkward angles because of where my outlet is in relation to my bed, or my desk chair.

One thing I will say that slightly annoys me about the silicone head: it doesn’t work as well over my clothes. Luckily, that’s not really necessary with the lower vibrations, but sometimes I’m lazy.

What else do I need to know about the Magic Wand Rechargeable?

  • The length of the wand and the circumference of the head: Just over 13 inches end to end with the head just over 7.5″ around.
  • Particularly if you have grip issues, this may be of interest: The MWRC is 4.75″ around at the narrowest part of the shaft; about 6″ around nearest the control panel; and about 6.25″ at the widest part of the shaft.
  • The charger is intended for North American outlets.
  • The vibrations: Low – 2,700rpms, Medium – 3,800rpms, High – 5,400rpms, Ultra – 6,300rpms (Compared to the Original Magic Wand: Low – 5,000 rpms, High – 6,000)
  • Since the head is silicone, I’d recommend sticking to water-based lubes like Sliquid SassyPlease Gel, or a hybrid lube like Sliquid Silk or Please Cream.
  • There are indicator lights. Blue bars for the steady vibrations, green ones for the patterns, and a red light while it’s charging.
  • It still fits the Pop Tops; they can be a great option if you want texture. I reviewed the G-Spotter one a while back, if you need some penetration with the vibrations.

Finally, the Magic Wand Rechargeable is $124.95 right now at Good Vibrations. It will almost never go on sale because of an agreement they have with the distributor. On the bright side, Good Vibes has free shipping on orders over $69 in the USA. You may wish to bookmark my sales and deals page which I update several times a week, especially on Fridays in case there ever is a sale specific to the MWRC.

If you do not already have the Original Magic Wand, or your current one is about to bite the dust, I’d highly encourage you to make the investment in the MWRC.

So much gratitude to Good Vibrations for sending me the Magic Wand Rechargeable to review!

  1. Who’s to say how long you should be “allowed” to run the MWRC? One time, it turned off right after I came. Seriously?
