Like A Lady #4

Say A Prayer

Rate this book
Say A Prayer is the fourth novella in the Like A Lady serial. It cannot be read as a standalone.

It hurts. God, does it ever hurt. Having your heart ripped from its home in your chest, metaphorically or literally, isn’t a fun thing. No, it’s gruesome, and once in a lifetime was more than enough. Twice. Twice is almost unbearable. I’ll make it, though. I’m strong enough to persevere, to move on, and I will because I know that there’s no other option. I can’t stop living. I won’t stop living. ~Red

One step. Two. I’ll take it a day at a time and hope to hell the pain goes away. The thing is, I know it won’t. It just keeps getting stronger because without her love, I’m lost. And it sucks. This feeling, the loss, it’s getting worse, but what am I supposed to do about it? She won’t listen to me. Nothing I say has swayed her, not a bit. Why can’t she see I’m miserable without her? ~Mason

“Sometimes, you just have to say a prayer and go for it, hoping like hell that everything is gonna be alright at the end. So, let’s say a prayer and get on the road. We have people to do and places to see.”

^^^^ My favorite quote from the book <3

I really like the plot of S.J.'s books. I love the Like A Lady series. I can never get enough of Mason and Red. This book was the perfect reflection and culmination of Mason and Red's story. I can't wait to read No Offense, Darlin'. It looks great! I am originally from a small town in the mid-west, so I can relate to a lot of these stories and it makes me feel right at home.

Favorite Quotes:

“Life has a funny way of coming around in circles, and karma is not always on target. In fact, I feel like karma meant to stop at another house, one a mile or two down the road, and somehow ended up here, dumping a heap of cow poop right on top of me.”

“She’s going to get weepy. I can feel it. The look on her face is as if someone has stolen her puppy, and I haven’t even walked out the door.”

“Sometimes, you just have to say a prayer and go for it, hoping like hell that everything is gonna be alright at the end. So, let’s say a prayer and get on the road. We have people to do and places to see.”

My Review:

S.J. Sawyer continues to taunt and tease me with her entertaining and highly addictive tale by releasing just enough of it to keep me on the hook – like a crack ho on the pipe. And after her latest release of Say A Prayer, I am really wanting to hit her in the back of her pretty head with my beloved kindle! I know my predicament is all my fault – I really should not read serials – I am too impatient… a less than appealing trait that I seem to forget each time I sign on for one… hmm I should blame the wine! But, sigh, she has done to me again! Here I was hoping for a conclusion and a HEA and she is stringing me along with yet with another installment of her ongoing NA dramedy. But I am growing increasing anxious and restless for that HEA. I am not a big fan of angst and conflict, but I am a big fan of steamy love stories, clever humor, and Mason, swoon - he makes this cougar purr! So Ms. Sawyer, don’t make me put down my goblet - gimme already!

I have been hooked to the Like A Lady series since book 1, and so was very excited to finally get to read Say A Prayer. I'm so very glad it didn't disappoint, but I do wish it had been longer as I LOVE LOVE LOVE these characters. Say A Prayer starts up right where we were left with Red's heart being broken by her best friend and Mason. Even though it was a long time ago, she still feels betrayed since they didn't tell her. Red is getting ready to leave for The University of Oklahoma but has yet to tell anyone. Just as she tries to fix things, her past comes back to bit her in the behind. Will Red and Mason finally get their HEA?

I LOVE Red and Mason so much that I could read about them every day. The character development is great, as the author gives us glimpses of them all through their teenage years that add to the fantastic story. A fast paced, amazing, and well written story line flows effortlessly, with well placed humor that had me laughing until my stomach hurt all through the story. S.J. Sawyer's talented writing style had hooked me from the very beginning of this series, and continues to hold me hostage while waiting impatiently for each new book. She ended this story with a bit of a look at the next book to come out dealing with some of the amazing secondaries, and I CANNOT WAIT so I happily HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I should start off saying I'm not much of a serial/parts fan, I'm not patient enough to wait when all I want is more at that moment. So when Say A Prayer popped up on my kindle I devoured it...seriously I read it so fast that I will go back and read it again. I LOVE Red and Mason. Their characters are full of emotions and they are finally showing it! And the storyline is funny, quirky, steamy, and unique! But I need more! I'm having withdraws! I NEED to know what happens, it sounds like a HEA but what if I'm wrong?!?

Say A Prayer is the fourth installment of SJ Sawyer's LIKE A LADY SERIES, and I must say I absolutely loved the way Mason and Red's story ended. I love a HEA kind of romance and when all comes together. Now while this one doesn't leave us with a cliffy, it sure does give us a little something to look forward to. A fifth book. The first few chapters, actually. It's just enough to excite you about what's to come! I know I can't wait :-)

LOVED this book. It finally brought everything together. Gave us all our answers and even hinted at possible spin offs in the future. I am really going to miss these characters. We can go back and re read the series as a whole now to bring them back anytime.

I have to say that I was pleased by the way this all wrapped up. I think Red evolved into a better version of herself because of all that she went through in a the two months this series takes place. Thanks for another great book!

Ok, so I read book 1 and really loved it, I loved the connection between Red and Mason, I loved all they're friends, I just really enjoyed it.
I then read books 2,3 and 4 together in a box set, and in book 2 it started going downhill for me, I'm not sure if i just didn't notice it in the first book or what but the time line in the last 3 books drove me up the wall! now I don't mind going back and forth but when the book is from 2 people's pov and it keeps going back and forth (not even to the same time line) I didn't know where i was half the time, also I didn't enjoy at all reading a chapter from one person's pov and then reading the same chapter again from the other person's pov.. I don't need or want to read the same thing twice!
I did enjoy the majority of the storyline however I didn't enjoy the way it was written.
I also have to say the sex scenes in these books were so strange like either put a sex scene in or don't, but what u can't do is put half a sex scene in and then when it gets to the good bit jump to the next chapter! talk about disappointing!
I've given books 2-4 3 stars purely because anything i rate 4 or 5 stars I would likely 're read, and I don't wish to read these books again.

'Say A Prayer's had me on the verge of tears. I wasn't sure what was going to happen with Red. Poor girl. I really want everything to turn out the way it should- everyone is loved and their lives go on with no heartache. I have to read more. A great add to your tbr list.

* I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review. *

This is book #4 in the Like A Lady Series and you do need to read the prior books to understand what is going on in this one. I love Author S J Sawyer's writing style, her humor, her characters and her train of thought. She is able to take the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions, laughs, and drama and make it into the readers most fun day ever. While you are reading this book, you will instantly fall in love with the characters, the way in which the author weaves the story, the drama and the fun that the author is having with her characters. The reader has no problem instantly realizing that the author loves her job and that she loves her characters just as much.

This book picks up where book 3 leaves us - Mason, Red and MaryAnne are in the midst of a love triangle/quarrel that threatens their friendships, relationships and future. Red has found out that her boyfriend/summer fling/love of her life has been with her best friend and now nothing can ever be the same. The drama and angst that pours out of the pages is instantly relatable to by any reader and the humor that MaryAnne brings to the story keeps the reader engaged and laughing out loud - even if they are not in the comfort of their own home...note to reader....beware that you will laugh out loud a lot so be mindful of where you are reading.

The author continues to try to make the reader like Jake and Shelby (soooo not gonna happen) and the author gives us closure on all of the lose ends regarding Red, Mason and MaryAnne, however, she does start a new thread that instantly hooks the reader and they don't want to stop reading. This book and these characters stay with the reader long after they have finished the story and the reader continues to predict the path that each character will go down next. This is a book hangover that will last a few reads after it to finally move on fully....be warned....this series is bound to make your top ten list of favorites and it will take a long time for anything to compare to it or take it down a notch in the ratings.

Add this series to your TBR list and don't hesitate to start it right now - it is that good!! Enjoy and don't be afraid to let the author know how much you enjoyed it - Don't forget that you will be laughing out loud so beware of where you are!! People will either want to know why or think that you are losing it....

This is the fourth book in the Like A Lady Series and they need to be read in order.

Scarlett "Red" Summers is confused after discovering a past relationship between Mason Pierce and her best friend Mary Lou. As much as she knows she loves him she keeps reminding herself that this was only a summer fling.

Mason Pierce has loved Red for as long as he can remember and how far will he go to prove that his love is the real thing and meant for more than just a summer?

Yet there is also Jake Roberson who hasn't quite given up on getting Red back for himself. Will Red be able to figure out what it is she is after?

I really liked this book as Red really had to come to terms with how much she wanted the past to influence her present and future. She had a friendship on the line with someone that was always there for her and she had to come to terms that what was done can't be changed. She also knew that she had made mistakes of her own in the past that she herself didn't want to be judged on.

Mason knew he had made some mistakes in the past but knew that he really wanted Red and would do whatever he could to make it up to her. Yet he made some mistakes with jumping to conclusions about certain things and jeopardizing what he could have with Red. He did not want to give up but was worried that she didn't care the same way he did.

Jake was such an ass with his feelings and how he treated women. He thought Red would just instantly come back to him. I loved what she did to him at the party and then what happened at the baseball benefit!

Such a great story and I'm interested to see what the author has for us next!

Well dealing with the aftermath of part 3 of this serial series we are at a place that I thought we would never see Mason and Red but just goes to show that even those storybook couples experience real life troubles and everything isn't always smooth sailing. It's how we recover from those shocking events that seperate the couples who are meant to be from those who are just in lust not love. I love this entry in the series just for that reason. Watching them fight to regain what they had before and get back to their love story made for a excellent addition to this storyline. We still have our typical funny moments and sarcastic comments (I would expect no less from this series actually haha) which add some levity to the serious situation going on here.

The farther we get into this story we really begin to see how different Red is now from the girl that we met in her wedding dress in the first book. She has become this tough character who has realized her worth and became comfortable with who She is and What she wants out of life. And I have loved seeing that transition of her character. Being with Mason has been good for her and has brought her a whole new level of confidence.

Mary Lou is actually pretty tame in this book and we don't see quite as many quirky shenigans and plans that she cooked up to involve Red and Mason and Monroe in. I guess it shows her growth as a character too but I did miss some of her outlandish behavior in this book. I hope we get to see more of her in later stories.

The benefit baseball game is An important scene in the story and one that you definitely want to slow down and savor as you read. And the ending of This book shows us that the adventure that these characters is just beginning! I hope we get to see more of their college adventures in the future because I know even if you take away the small town these guys still can cause a ruckus in a larger town and be memorable. It's just a change in venue haha. Way to go S.J. you have another awesome story in this amazing series!

Holy hell what a brilliant, rollercoaster of a ride the Like a Lady Serial has been!

Say A Prayer is the fourth novella in the Like A Lady Serials and picks straight up from where the third novella finishes

~Mason

I really enjoyed the journey I've been on with Red and Mason, I loved the dynamics of their relationship, their story was a sweet romance with a bit of angst thrown in for good measure. As I've said in my previous reviews the witty banter between the main characters and secondary characters had me laughing out loud quite a few times especially the one liners that come out of Mary Lou's mouth. I instantly connected with the character's from novella 1 and I'm so happy that Red and Mason got there happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the plotline and felt it flowed my only criticism is at time as it's told through dual POV's it was a little repetitive...that being said would definitely recommend to readers who enjoy quick easy reads.

Sadly, this is part four of the four-part novella “Like A Lady” series. I’m so sad that this story is over!!! I’m so happy that I got to read them all though. They are all written so well and blend together into one big story.
This book the author goes back and forth into time and to the present and switches from one character to another. That sounds like it might be confusing, right? It’s anything but confusing! It flows perfectly and reads SO WELL! She goes back and forth into time and to the present in her other books but I think this book it flowed flawlessly! There was really no question what time I was in or who was talking. It also answers some questions I had building up from book one and laid everything out nice and neat! This book tied everything up nice and neat into a nice little bow.
Did I say I’m sad that this series is over? I totally am! I loved reading Red aka Scarlett and Mason’s story! It is sweet, funny, romantic, heart breaking, angering, frustrating, and loving all at once! It will turn you into a baseball fan and make you want to go watch a game, be prepared.
Regarding the author, it’s been fun watching her writing evolve and the characters evolve from book one to book four. They’ve all been great, but the writing seems to have advance and the characters have evolved more too. It’s been a really nice progression!
I can’t wait to read what’s next for her. I’m certain she can knock anything out of the park!

In Say A Prayer we pick up right where we left off in Fix Your Makeup. Red is reeling from what she feel is a betrayal of her best friend and Mason, the man she's loved forever. Her heart is completely broken compared to how she felt when she found Jake cheating on her wedding day. She doesn't think she'll ever be able to get past it but she doesn't know how to live without them.
Mason has loved Red for as long as he can remember, but never knew she felt the same. Having spent the summer with her, he never wants to be without her again. When someone gets in the way of their happiness and she leaves him, he's heartbroken. He misinterpret a situation between Red and Jake and thinks they've gotten back together. Can he get her back and get the HEA they deserve or has he lost her forever?

I loved the conclusion to this story. There's a lot of twists and turns, misunderstandings and fear of feelings and truths. We get to see both Red and Mason's point if views, as well as alternating chapters from the present to the past. The only thing disappointing to me was that I wish there was more at the end. Maybe we'll get to see more of these characters in future books...I certainly hope so!

I am very sad; we have come to the end of Mason & Red’s story. I LOVE them and I wish the story would have been longer; I’m hoping we will get more in the future. Although it’s only been a summer, Scarlett has matured and has more self-confidence; finally realizing it’s meant to be. The story is told in alternating POV between Mason and Red, including scenes from their past. Way back in book 1 Mason and Red start their summer together as friends. In the previous book we are left wondering if it’s over between them. Red was very upset with Mary Lou and Mason and she did not want anything to do with them: “No! Let me go! None of this matters. We were doomed from the start, anyway. It was a summer fl-“ Mason is devastated but he gives Red space for her to work out her feelings. He is a gentleman, he is sweet and he is a hunk. Truly enjoyed it is a beautiful story of a love that has been growing for years and neither of them had the courage to tell the other. They drive off……..

Red: “See, here’s the thing, it wasn’t ever very good for me. In fact, it wasn’t any good, but I was too dang inexperienced to know better.”

Mason: “Loving Red, that ain’t the problem. Losing her is.”

Mason: “I love you, Scarlett. I’m not letting you go again. I’ve made that mistake once. It’s not gonna happen again. You understand? I didn’t fight for you before, but I damn sure will this time.”

Say a pray by S. J. Sawyer was once again a beautifully written book. I loved reading where Red and Mason's journey has taken them. I need more! There is twist and turns and you are always left on the edge of your seat thanks to S.J. Sawyer writing. The characters the plots are amazing.

Say a Prayer is written in alternating POV Told from Mason and Red's Pov

Red and Mason's journey is a adventurous one. You've learned of a past that is devastating to all parties involved. The emotions are nothing less then a Roller coaster ride you feel heartbroken, loss, love, friendship, and loyalty. You get to know other characters better and love the same characters you have loved from the very beginning. Red and Mason have an incredible story and a curvy road to each other.

Quote's that caught my attention from the book

"Loving Red, That ain't the problem. Losing her is."~~~Mason

"I've been so mad this summer, mad at Jake for being a cheating liar, mad at Mel for keeping her relationship with Jake a secret all these years, and most of all mad at you and Mary Lou."~~~Red

"Sometimes, you just have to say a prayer and go for it, hoping like hell that everything is gonna be alright at the end."

Can't wait to read "No Offense, Darlin."

5 on my knees stars!! Mason, Mason, Mason!!! That man certainly knows how to pull at your heartstrings!! I love this series, and this book proves why!

This is the end of the series and a nice little wrap up to Mason and Red’s story! Their story was wrapped up in a nice little bow and I loved it!! Mason and Red have been on quite a journey together and while I’m sad that it’s over, I loved the whole ride!! SJ Sawyer knows how to give you characters that you actually feel and root for!! I think everyone needs a little Mason in their life!!!

The is the 4th (and hopefully not final) book in the Like A Lady Series.
This story follows Scarlett (Red) and Mason and how they have FINALLY become a couple.... until the truth of the past comes out. Now Red thinks it's like Jake all over again. But the pain it worse because she realizes that loosing Mason is awful because she really loves him... and he really loves her.
This book will make you laugh and cry and want to hit a couple very mean girls. You will swoon.... over Mason, Monroe, Beau and even Cash. This book is full of your future book boyfriends. The author SJ Sawyer has the ability to make each and every character feel very real. She gives them all very real emotions and character. Each is very developed and multi dimensional... I'm still reeling and want to visit Freeport OK or Norman.... because their are real gentlemen there (very hot, hunky, well mannered men) and of course a Jake that I would love to backhand.
I honestly hope this isn't the end of the series because I will miss Mason and Red and Mary Lou and Monroe, etc etc. UGH I really am trying not to be a spoiler here.... Sooooo let me just say GET THIS BOOK.. but get the other 3 before it too. You will want to meet these people, even to be a fly on the wall..... Damn this can't be the end of their story.

The previous book in the series left me hanging not knowing the rest of Red and Mason's story. It left me wanting to know whether they would remain apart or if they could get past the issues that broke them apart. Also wondering what would happen with the group of friends who seemed so close and looked out for each other.

I was irritated by Red not giving Mason a chance to explain what had happened or didn't with Mary Lou. I realize that finding your fiance in bed with a person who was supposed to be your friend takes a toll on a person and is why she wasn't given Mason the chance because she would have been betrayed by another best friend and love.

I recommend you read this book to find out the ending of Mason and Red's story. Do they end up together, alone or with others? Make sure to read the first books in the series before you read this one. Must read!

In the fourth and final Like a Lady Series book called 'Say A Prayer' we return to see what Red and Mason are up to after their massive falling out with each other and with Mary Lou. At the beginning of the series all seemed only slightly complex but as the series continued on things got progressively worse and worse. By the time that the secret comes out, my heart has broken for these two over and over again.

Through it all we learn what real friendship is, what real relationships with our friends are about and how we navigate going from childhood to adulthood with these same friendships.

It is a wonderful conclusion to a great series and I am glad to have read them all. Well don'e Ms. Sawyer!

The last of the Like A Lady series. I’ve been waiting for the final installment of Red & Mason’s story. I love that in this finale Red has finally learn and grow. She became more tougher and faced everything head on. Realizing that you yourself has a fault and owning those mistakes takes a lot of courage. SJ Sawyer has shown that in her characters, also the importance of family and friends. Of course it wouldn’t be Red’s story if there wouldn’t be funny, sweet & sexy scenes.

Like A Lady series was concluded beautifully, it’s too bad this is just a novella since i’m still looking for more when i finished the book. Another great read from SJ Sawyer! I’ll be looking forward to her next books.

Need more!

I waited to read book three until book four came out thinking it was the last one and now!...omg! I need book five! Lol. Wonderful Indy author. Everyone should pick up these books and laugh and blush and enjoy! These stories are so like real life in small town Oklahoma. Yea...sad but true on many counts but also depicts the beauty and peacefulness that is hidden in our state. I've traveled all over the world and quickly learned that there is no place like Oklahoma!, no place I'd rather call home. Readers, enjoy our state in these books as well! Now I need book five! Lol

I have to say, I expected a little more from the last book in the series. It felt shorter than the rest of the books, but I was very glad all the story lines wrapped up. It felt very obvious what was going on with Shelby, and I hated how Jake seemed to come out of nowhere, to act like a jealous boyfriend, when he avoided Red like the plague after *LITERALLY* screwing her over. It was refreshing light read, and I look forward to reading about Beau in the next segment!

Thank you S. J. Sawyer for continuing the series.

Best yet!

I'm sad this wasn't longer! I must say with honesty, other times I felt the past to present switches were confusing and I'd forget who I was reading about. This time around it seemed to flow better or maybe I just got use to the writing but either way, it worked. My favorite book out of this series. I do like that it's kept classy when it comes to sexual content. There's just enough to keep it interesting but didn't go full fledged "must be 21 to continue reading" material. Well done. Bravo!

Book four is more heartache and seeing if their relationship is just a summer fling or something that will last. Most of the book they are not together and Red has trying times with her ex. Her character is very strong and you see her start to evolve as an individual. Being apart for both of them is killing them and you can really start to see what their love is really about. S.J is an awesome writter and she has completed the series. To me we were just left wanting more. I wanted more closure with the end. Again another book I could not put down. Loved it.

"The only thing you need to believe is that I love you, Scarlett Lynn Summers. I never have loved anyone else, and I never will."~~Mason

This was a sweet little wrap up for Red and Mason. I have loved this entire series from start to finish. I waited very patiently for this final book to see how Red and Mason's journey would finish and S.J. Sawyer did not fail me! Amazing series and amazing characters!
