Seven stories of the Changi Area Through Historical Maps and Charts
On 12 March 2018, DPM Teo Chee Hean posted on his Facebook showing a rare Spanish chart depicting the area around Singapore Island and the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. This 1778 chart was presented to DPM Teo by the Director of the Naval Museum of Madrid, Vice Admiral Fernando Zumalacárregui.
The label on the eastern coast of Singapore Island was intriguing. It read: barrancas coloradas, or red ravines in English. In every other map or chart depicting this area, the description was almost always 'red cliff', but never before described as 'red ravines'. What could be the reason(s) for this difference?
Attend this talk if you are curious about the story behind this Spanish chart. This talk will present six more stories of the Changi area as seen through the lens of selected historically significant maps or charts. They date from the early 17th century to the present, spanning four centuries of mapping of the Changi area.
