Comments from the jury and others of a 2011-2012 short story competition held in Goa, at the Fundacao Orient. January 28, 2012. The programme begins with a welcome by Fundacao Oriente delegate in India Eduardo Kol de Carvalho. Novelist-editor-writer Victor Rangel-Ribeiro talks about the 20th century birth of Goan writing in English. He traces the birth of novels in English, and more. Author Dr Maria Aurora Couto introduces the panel of judges. Konkani novelist and writer Damodar Mauzo shares his views, while Vishram Gupte gives a spirited analysis of the role of, and challenges, to the writerly life (including from modern day journalism). He talks about some short stories he came across in this competition. Soft-spoken engineer-turned-writer Jose Lourenco narrates his spontaneously-created "short story" and talks about the pleasure and pain of judging over five dozen short stories that entered this competition. First prize winner Cordelia Francis makes an appealing acceptance speech on behalf of herself and speaks for the other winners.
