Tarot Card of the Month ~ The Nine of Swords
For those who are reading this newsletter for the first time, every month I discuss the tarot card that has appeared the most in the month's tarot readings. Even though the cards will always have individual significance, a commonly occurring card can also have a say about what's going on for the whole community.
The Nine of Swords was very insistent this month, and what a card to keep on repeating itself, over and over again! It's not one of those cards that people love to see: it is often depicted as someone crying in bed with nine swords pointing in towards them.
However, when I chose these images from my tarot collection I realised that not one of them features the standard teary bed scene! But anyway, that's the general vibe of this card: weeping in bed with swords nearby.
This Nine helps us face what we need to face and sit with the discomfort that arises when we aren't suppressing our emotions or running away. It is the archetype that is waiting for us at the end of the road, when we're exhausted and completely out of breath, left with no choice but to look at what we have been avoiding. We may not like what we experience, but if we observe what we are feeling as honestly as we can, it is far easier (and less painful in the long run) to navigate our next steps beyond this ouchy part.
Ouchy parts can be painful memories, regrets, comparisons, difficult thought patterns and unreasonable (or reasonable?) fears. The Nine of Swords holds our face to those parts, but if we don't run away we can notice that the complexity of the pain starts to change and disassemble. Perhaps those crunchy bits won't have as much hold on us as they used to.
With this archetype we may find the willingness to try to keep growing even when we are weary, knowing that the path will not always be golden. We can acknowledge the need to keep on going despite the creeping fear that relief may not come. But come it must, even if small and fluttery.
As usual, let us now hear from the four cards featured here from my tarot collection.
The 9 of Swords from Next World Tarot by Cristy C. Road says, "Rest as best you can during this time, but stay alert to old fears grabbing at your mind. Trust in your own wisdom to protect you."
The Nine of Swords from Prisma Visions Tarot by James R. Eads says, "I guess it's time to see how sharp those realisations can be. If you go with the process though, you are bound to gain useful insights into your own nature, so that you can be less overwhelmed next time you work with the Nine of Swords."
The Nine of Swords from Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince, "Approach your thoughts with careful resilience, be aware of every spike that could pierce you if you don't balance yourself appropriately. Learn how to gradually remove yourself from the proximity of the swords."
The Nine of Swords from The Elora Tarot, coordinated by Shelley Carter (this image by Silvia Galbraith) says, "If you must flow with the melancholia, make sure you create great stories that can be told to help inspire others, now and into the future. Don't let these feelings stagnate, release them so that more awakenings can take place."
Be mindful of those Swords.
Until next month, best wishes,
Sarah Barry (Psychic Sarah)
P.S Want more tarot stories? I post a Tarot Reading for the Collective on my website every month. This month I used Tarot of the World in Colours, a Keith Haring inspired deck by Eugene Vinitski Illustration.
The questions for March are:
What’s lifting us up?
What’s letting us down?
What lies ahead?
What helps us stay true?
Read on for the responses.
[I generally post the Tarot Reading for the Collective in the first week (or so) of every month.]

Since December 2013 I have been selling my very own delicious blend of chai - Psychic Sarah's Queen of Cups Chai. I personally select and blend the spices, and package every single packet of chai.
One 220g packet costs AUD$22 (GST inclusive), and will make you at least 50 large (I mean huge) cups of delicious authentic chai. Read a review about it here. I know I am biased, but it's my favourite chai! But that's to be expected of course, as I made it to suit my tastebuds. Friends and family often specifically mention that I am to make them chai when they come for a visit, and if I forget they have no qualms in reminding me to make it for them!
If you are local to Sydney (and in particular the Inner West) you can drink my chai in-house and/or purchase a packet to take home with you at Petty Cash Café in Marrickville (a truly glorious café on so many levels). Or, you can order it online. You can buy a packet off me directly when you come for a tarot reading, but be sure to let me know at time of booking so that I definitely have chai for you!
