Overview of Workshop:

Participants will receive a copy of the manual. This course will provide an in-depth review of the entire technology report writing process and covers all eight modules the manual. Participants can complete their writing on their titles, problem statements, proposals, abstracts and executive summaries and submit it to the instructor for personalized feedback afterwards.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Suitable Report Topics
  • Your audience/reader and how to write for your audience
  • Writing Titles
  • Writing Problem Statements
  • Writing Proposals
  • Editing your writing: noticing and correcting common writing errors
  • Making good word choices
  • Gaining familiarity with OACETT's Pre-Screening Checklists for the Proposal and the Report
  • Writing an Abstract
  • Gaining familiarity with the body of the Report, the order of the components, the specific information that should occur in each component
  • Incorporating Table of Contents, List of Illustrations, Glossary of Terms, Foreword, Confidentiality Agreements, Declaration of Sole Authorship, Appendices
  • Referencing and/or Footnoting and In-text Citations
  • Formatting including: margins, font size and style, headings and sub-headings, illustrations, and, numbers in the report

*All members in attendance will receive a certificate they can use towards CPD.

Who Should Attend:

OACETT members working towards their C.E.T. designation and wanting to sharpen their technical writing skills.

Instructor: Samantha Burns, M.A.

Samantha Burns has a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Master’s degree in Education from Brock University. She has been training the OACETT Technology Report Writing Seminar since 2008 and has helped many OACETT Associate Members gain the confidence and knowledge to complete their technology reports and earn their C.E.T. certification. She has strong knowledge of the field of adult education. She has held teaching, training and program development positions with various educational organizations including the University of French West Indies and Guiana (Martinique), the Niagara Catholic District School Board, and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. She is currently an instructor in the English Language Program at the University of Guelph.
