I think this is actually a really smart move by MS. They might have failed to appeal to most of Japan, but the niche, well really niche, shoot em up genre has thrived on the 360.
Really nice to see them recognize that and work with Cave.
[..]and encouraging Cave to release Deathsmiles 2X as the first region free game through Games on Demand[..]
I saw this thread at work the other day and hadn't had a chance to comment until now.
Just a theory, but, with MS courting Cave, publishing Treasure's shmups on XBLA, and encouraging Cave to release Deathsmiles 2X as the first region free game through Games on Demand, I think someone at MS actually gives a shit about this niche community.
I can't imagine the opportunity cost is that great either, considering the billions MS makes off Windows, Office, ect. I want to believe that someone at MS' Xbox division is a big fan.
Anyway, great to see that SDOJ will be getting a current gen release. Rising Star Games, you know what you must do...

let me vomit my money all over your face until the end of time
it would be my pleasure
it would be my honor
There's a long interview with Makoto Asada (producer) about this game on Famitsu.com this week:
http://www.famitsu.com/news/201211/08023600.html
Some highlights:
-The arrange mode is being done by S.Yagawa, Ikeda, and Ichimura. S.Yagawa is doing the basics, while Ikeda and Ichimura are programming the rest. Only one character is playable in this mode (the new character, voiced by Aya Hirano). There will be difficulty settings based on shot type, like in the arcade game. It will have a heavy story mode, fully voiced. It will be quite unlike any previous arrange modes or black label modes.
-The arrange mode will be 16:9 vertical, a first for Cave (and for the X360, I believe).
-The game will also have social aspects such as 3 player co-op teams that compete for online prizes like exclusive gamer icons. The scores of the three ships will accumulate and be posted as one score per team.
-The port will have an anime intro with a song by Aya Hirano - a first for any Cave game! The anime is being done by a well-known company. It will be previewed early next year.
-The arcade port is being programmed by S.Yagawa. Apparently this is the first time he has done this. The guy who usually does it, Koizumi, is busy with other stuff.
-This will definitely be their last X360 game.
-Microsoft is collaborating with Cave on aspects of the port, helping them implement various innovative new features.
-SDOJ will not being getting an arcade Black Label release.
-A big announcement related to this game will be made in March.
I don't like the sound of some of these things. Social bullshit, anime intro, Microsoft's "innovative features" (read: "Kinect"). What's next, a fully voiced adventure mode with hours of dialog? I like my arcades arcady, thank yo very much.
The second I encounter an unskippable cut scene in a Cave game, I'm out.
Death Smiles kinda has unskippable cutscenes.
Qute needs to put a date on Ginga Force for February.

Ug. February? I heard it was pushed, but figured it was still 2012.
