April 13 and 14, 2018: Transgender Voices Festival presented by One Voice Mixed Chorus and held at the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
www.onevoicemn.org/transvoicesVALUES, GOALS, AND PRIORITIES:
* The Transgender Voices Festival is guided by values of social justice, gender justice, inclusivity, and accessibility.
* We recognize and wish to represent the diversity and intersections of identity in our communities including those of race, gender identity and expression, age, dis/ability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or belief, and more.
* We center the voices of trans and gender nonconforming and non-binary people.
* We value a learning and supportive space for all, where it's safe to ask questions, be authentic and be vulnerable, in support of our goals of reducing isolation, building community, and creating social change.
The Festival offers a place for trans singers across musical genres and cultures to explore our voices and identities, grow as artists, and learn techniques for voice care. Trans people can explore singing, perhaps for the first time, and join our voices with others. And for non-singers, there will be opportunities to explore voice in other ways like storytelling and poetry. The Festival is also a place for voice teachers, music teachers, and choir directors to learn about transgender voice, gain a deeper understanding of trans and gender nonconforming experience, and receive tools to support singers in the classroom and beyond.
Educators are welcome from across K-12 or higher ed, as well as private teachers and choir directors. Continuing education credits for school music teachers will be available thanks to our partnership with MMEA (the Minnesota Music Educators Association).
Accessibility is a top priority. Some of the ways we will provide access include a sliding scale registration, a no-scent policy, a quiet room, and a venue that is wheelchair accessible, on a bus line, and offers free parking.
