Position Purpose/Summary

Responsible for developing and providing teen programs and services for the Central Library, including collection development of print and non-print materials, programming, reference services, outreach and similar duties pertaining to teen services, and assisting in developing and providing system-wide teen services, initiatives, and collections.  Work is performed with latitude in the exercise of independent judgment under the general direction of the Adult and Youth Information Services Manager who reviews work through observation, reports and conferences.  Supervision may be exercised over other employees or volunteers, directly or indirectly.
 

Essential Functions

  • Initiates and engages in special projects that analyze, design and develop special services for various diverse teenage audiences. Participates individually or in work teams to make recommendations for new initiatives or changes in service as they relate to the overall operation of the library as related to teens.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with digital library resources. Models knowledge of and engagement with emerging technologies to system-wide colleagues. Collaborates with community organizations and obtains funding for youth-development projects and projects that allow teens to engage with emerging technologies.
  • Assists Adult and Youth Information Services Manager in developing programs for teens, such as summer reading and youth leadership development programs. Facilitates teen advisory group, oversees maintenance of teen website pages, develops, presents, and evaluates programs for teens system-wide in collaboration with other library staff.
  • Develops and implements collection development plans for the Central Library teen collection. Selects, purchases, weeds, and maintains fiction, nonfiction, and non-print materials for teen patrons at the Central Library. Assists branch librarians with teen collections.
  • Acts as liaison to school department on matters related to curriculum, assignments, teen needs, outreach, etc. Provides resources and references for student projects. Conducts school group tours for teens. Visits middle and high schools to offer book talks, book clubs, and other collaborative projects promoting reading and STEM learning; promotes library services for teens.
  • Coordinates the day to day use of technology and reading and viewing materials, and other teen activities in the Central Library.
  • Keeps abreast of teen trends, current events, and popular reading interests and responds using a creative, lively approach to reach the teen population. Keeps abreast of developments and technological advances in the library field through conferences, associations, etc. Attends After School Programming and Outreach Team meetings; may serve as team leader. Attends regional and statewide teen continuing education sessions.  Functions as member of Adult Information Services team. Provides reference and instructional services to the general public, branches, and regional libraries. When required, functions as Senior-in-Charge of desk activities and provides assistance to other librarians; determines priorities of service, interprets reference policies, and determines final disposition of questions received during the shift.
  • Researches, writes, and implements grants.
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

  • Familiarity with emerging technologies such as but not limited to 3D printing technology, coding, podcasting, and video editing.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and completion of an American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science.
  • Two years of specialized library experience.
