A stuffed venue greets Peter Hook and his band The Light as they hit home turf for their latest headline show.

Most recently, Hook has paid live tribute to the songs that started his career - in particular, the music produced during Joy Division's all too short career.

But now he's moving on to the next chapter: New Order - a delicate next move, given the bad blood that now exists between some of the members and potential legal proceedings regarding royalties.

But you get the feeling it'd take more than those kind of dramas to break a tough cookie like Hooky.

Actually, this latest show is based around two Factory Records released that provided a definitive overview of those two bands: both called Substance. First, the 1987 New Order singles compilation with nods to Joy Division, and second a 1988 Joy Division companion compilation tracking them from Warsaw to Joy Division's enduring anthem Love With Tear Us Apart.

Coinciding with that is the release of Hooky's third book, Substance: Inside New Order , out on October 6.

Given the gravity of the songs on that album - from Joy Division's Ceremony to New Order's True Faith - it's hardly surprising the place is packed and the atmosphere electric.

They start with an instrumental version of Murder before Hook heads for the microphone for Procession. After all these years he still seems modest on stage, no diva airs about him.

Then onto New Order's Substance - a faithful rendering of the original album, a setlist that's impossible to argue with. Everything's Gone Green, Temptation, Blue Monday, Confusion, Thieves Like Us...

The lighting is moody and spectacular, all back lit and dark out front. It has been a difficult five years, Hooky confesses, but he's proud to see so many people remain keen to see the gigs and hear these tunes live.

Tirelessly he storms through more hits: The Perfect Kiss, Sub-culture, Shellshock, State Of The Nation, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, sending us back to a reinvigorated 1987 and the glory days of parties at the Hacienda.

A 15 minute breather, and part two unfolds: Joy Division’s Substance, track after track, Hooky taking time to dedicate Atmosphere to the recently lost Alan Wise and Love Will Tear Us Apart to his friend and former band mate Ian Curtis.

That's where it ends - on the entire crowd singing Love Will Tear Us Apart for several minutes, forcing the band to ditch a planned encore of Shadowplay. It's a small sacrifice on a night like this.
