The Royal Sorceress: Book I of the Royal Sorceress series Kindle Edition
Christopher G. Nuttall has been planning sci-fi books since he learned to read. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Chris created an alternate history website and eventually graduated to writing full-sized novels. Studying history independently allowed him to develop worlds that hung together and provided a base for storytelling. After graduating from university, Chris started writing full-time. As an indie author, he has published five novels (so far) through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. The Royal Sorceress is his first novel to be professionally published. Chris is currently living in Borneo with his wife, muse, and critic Aisha. Make sure you have 'Publishers fonts' enabled on your font menu for The Royal Sorceress or you won't see the beautiful decorated initials at the start of each chapter.

The author in this series has more sympathy for the downtrodden than in most of his writing, as well as more sympathy for revolutionaries (usually just fodder for his libertarian military leaders).
He comes overly close to a counterfactual slur against Darwin, but just manages to avoid attributing the eugenics faction of the magic wielders to Darwun personally.
Taken altogether a tolerable first entry in what is, in effect, an alternative history of the British Empire. Worth investing in the second volume.

I like the era the book is set in, the characters were instantly likeable and the writing was smooth allowing for a good fluid read. The story is original and i like the fact that Mr Nuttall has used a female as the lead character. It helps reflect on the differences between our modern world and the historical one in the novel by using the struggle of a woman in a time when they were second rate citizens. The only set of books i have read which could be used remotely for comparison is 'His Dark Materials' by Philip Pullman however they went a bit weird and i certainly prefer TRS. I like the way Mr Nuttall developes his characters but also the way he developes the worlds they are set in. The politics and social systems are complex and ever shifting which adds to an altogether great read, i am looking forward to more...

Overall I enjoyed the read; and would recommend to anyone who has read the Schooled in Magic series. This is a different magical universe, but one that is just as rewarding.
