New Yorkers love a deal, and soon we'll have one more available to us. Two smartphone apps will soon be combining forces to give you the option to share rides around town in yellow cabs, competing with the poplar Uberpool and Lyft Line services.
Taxi-hailing apps Arro (the yellow cab-summoning app created by the company that controls Taxi TV) and Bandwagon (a ride-sharing app that works from the airports) will allow you to book shared rides in yellow taxis by the end of 2016, the Verge reports. This is another attempt by the yellow cab industry to keep up with successful car apps, though yellow cabs still drive the most people around the city. “Drivers will be rewarded not only by higher fares from longer rides, but with an additional base fare of $2.50, for making two stops on the same ride," said Bandwagon founder and CEO David Mahfouda.
It will be interesting to see how the initiative works out with impatient New Yorkers. Already, people that take ride-sharing apps often complain and give their drivers lower ratings because of longer rides and multiple pickups. Keep calm and rideshare on, guys.
