CHIP CHANDLER

Christmas Roundup

The shopping extravaganza Christmas Roundup takes place Friday through Sunday in the Amarillo Civic Center South Exhibit Hall, 401 S. Buchanan St.

The event is a joint fundraiser by Amarillo Symphony Guild and Amarillo Museum of Art Alliance.

Friday opens with a luncheon on Premiere Row inside Merchant Hall; the event costs $30 and is by reservation only. Music will be provided by faculty members of the Amarillo College Suzuki String Program.

Shopping hours are 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $5; children 12 and younger are free.

"The World on Our Walls"

A collaborative exhibition between Amarillo Museum of Art and Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum opens Friday at AMoA, 2200 S. Van Buren St.

"The World on Our Walls: Eastern American and European Paintings from the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum" largely comes from donated collections from Texas Panhandle pioneer families, dating from the 1500s to the 1940s and includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and miniatures. Artists represented include William Hogarth, Marco Bello, Martin Rico y Ortega, Thomas Creswick and Johannes H.L. de Haas.

The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 30. An opening reception is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with remarks by Michael Grauer, PPHM's associate director for curatorial affairs and curator of art.

Best of the Southwest

Amarillo Fine Arts Association's Best of the Southwest Fall Show opens Friday during First Friday Art Walk at The Galleries at Sunset Center, 3701 Plains Blvd.

Judging was done by artist and speaker Emin Abbasov.

A reception and awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, and the show hangs through Nov. 30.

Union Pacific Steam Locomotive

The Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 will stop in Amarillo on Saturday as part of the UP 150 Express, a multi-segment tour celebrating Union Pacific's 150th anniversary.

The train is traveling 13,000 miles through 15 states as part of the celebration.

No. 844 is scheduled to arrive in Amarillo at 11:45 a.m. at 83 S. Pierce St.

Other stops include at 4:45 p.m. Friday in Childress, 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Clarendon, 2:01 p.m. Saturday in Channing and 4:15 p.m. Saturday in Texline.

Harrington House

The Winter Holiday Costume Exhibit opens Tuesday at Harrington House, focusing on late philanthropist Sybil Harrington's evening gown collection.

The exhibition runs through Dec. 18 with tours by appointment from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Two of Harrington's opera gowns, as well as other pieces designed by Bill Blass, will be displayed.

A blue velvet gown and a red silk faille and tulle evening gown custom-made by Madame Paquin of Paris in the early 1950s will be displayed. Other noteworthy designers include Saz, Balenciaga, Bob Mackie and Oscar de la Renta.

In addition, the dining room will be set to reflect the holiday theme.

Tours are free but limited to four people ages 14 and older.
