The Kent Metro Cold Case Team has arrested a suspect in the 2007 killing of Russell Griffin, 19, who was shot as he walked up to a house on Cromwell Avenue SE.

Alvon Marquis Davis, 22, who is in prison, was charged with second-degree murder, felonious use of a firearm and being a habitual offender, the cold case team said Thursday, Nov. 1.

Griffin was shot and killed as he walked into his home at 1154 Cromwell during the early morning of April 9, 2007.

A witness told police that Griffin had just returned after a fast-food run, and was walking up to the residence when he was shot. The gunman fled the area.

The cold case team developed new leads in the case that led them to Davis, who is held in the Ionia Maximum Corrections Facility after being convicted in Kent County of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

He is serving a sentence of one year, seven months to 15 years in prison, records showed.

Davis waived his probable-cause hearing on Tuesday in Grand Rapids District Court. He will be held in the Kent County Correctional Facility until he has a status conference.

The cold case team consists of detectives from state police, Grand Rapids Police Department and Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

The team, funded by a National Institute of Justice grant, has solved 11 homicide cases.
