The Valkyrie Project #1

The Valkyrie Project

Rate this book
Men in a black hovervan grabbed Ana's brother off the skywalk as she took him to school. That was sixteen years ago, but Ana hasn't let it go. It doesn't help that their parents left her to fend for herself. And it definitely doesn't help that Memo still sends her cryptic messages from, well, somewhere.

Ana took the job at the US Intelligence Agency so she could use their resources to find Memo. Unfortunately, that also means she has to work for them.

So when a shadowy organization know as the Continuum starts going after the people that the agents of the Valkyrie Project are supposed to protect, Ana finds herself facing down technology decades ahead of its time, as well as questionable decisions the Agency has made.

She understands that there's a lot of classified material in the Agency, but when those secrets include modifications they've made to the only man she's ever considered falling in love with, Ana has to decide where to draw the line.

Does she want to fight an elusive, exceptionally well-armed enemy for a government that treats its employees like drones? Or does she really just want to find her brother?

The Valkyrie Project is a good read. It's characters are well-written. The action sequences are great. The dialogue flows easily. The technology is very imaginative. The storyline is a mix of good guys versus bad guys with a personal quest and a little romance to make it very interesting.

The book does end on a high note and a cliffhanger. I'm going to be watching for the sequel and more from Nels Wadycki.

An exciting story taking place in the not-too-distant future, this novel has surprises and wrinkles around every corner. Wadycki is a master of the unusual analogy, using allusions to remote and unusual activity to describe current action. The writing is well-done and interesting. However, I didn't go five stars because the writing is uneven. The analogies and descriptions are overpowering in some sections and conspicuously absent in others. Noticing the difference takes away from a genuinely great story. I'm sure there will be more of the story, because the ending was a baseline for excitement yet to come. Wadycki paints a dystopian world of the future in which good and evil are difficult to recognize for both the reader and Ana, the major character. The story covers Ana's journey to enlightenment, and sets the stage for the future. I recommend this book.

I wanted to like this book. It has some fun world building and a plot device that I enjoy in my books. Unfortunately, it suffers from a lot of problems. First off, there are a number of typos and grammatical errors especially towards the end of the book that throw me out of the flow trying to decipher the intent of the sentences. Secondly, it depends on too much suspension of disbelief in the actions of the other characters. The world seems to revolve around the main character and she can do whatever she wants to do without recourse. Finally, the other minor characters don't really have any character building other than being a way for the protagonist to solve problems.

Reminds me of The Man From Uncle TV series, August 25, 2016

This review is from: The Valkyrie Project: The Valkyrie Project Technothriller Series Book 1 (Kindle Edition)

I stopped reading at 30% into the book. At that point I still didn't know what the Valkyrie Project is or why all of the agents but one are women. I also did not understand why there are less than 25 agents. The book resembles a literary version of the old Man From Uncle TV series which I outgrew some years ago. I downloaded this book via Kindle Unlimited.

Interesting story with some nice twists. The main characters are nicely defined, but secondary characters are a little underdeveloped.

Lots of action and witty comments. The pace is remincent of Bond and Destroyer books. A fun read overall.

If you like this, you will probalby enjoy "Serving in Time" an old book about time tampering.

This book kept the action coming from the opening pages right up to the end. I would have liked a little more detail and background on some of the side characters and the agency, but it wasn't jarring without the added detail. Looking forward to the next one.

Well written fast paced! SciFi secret agent government conspiracy. What's not to like? Protagonist is a driven individual with one goal 'find her brother'. Along the way she develops a sense of worth, trust and cynicism that is both real and believable. Waiting for second installment of the series.
