Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Jeremy Zalacca - Assistant SID

Women's hockey falls to Colgate in overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT women's hockey team (5-11-4) held a 2-0 lead after the first period but Brittany Phillips completed a hat trick with the game-winner at the 3:28 mark in overtime as Colgate (6-13-2) rallied for the 3-2 win at Ritter Arena. The Tigers had been 6-0 on the season when they scored the first goal and the defeat ended RIT's four game unbeaten streak, the squad's first loss since Dec. 9.

Ashlynne Rando stopped 32 shots to earn her fourth win of the season, while #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# made 20 stops in a losing effort.

#Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) and Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic)# scored for RIT, who held a 34-23 advantage in shots.

The Tigers dominated the first period and took the lead at the 12:58 mark. #Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# won the faceoff directly to Maugeri who blasted a shot past Rando.

Just over five minutes later, Payerl converted a power play goal on assists from #Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) and Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres)# to put RIT ahead 2-0. It was RIT's fifth straight game with a power-play goal.

The Tigers held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the first stanza and prevented any good scoring chances for the Raiders.

Colgate narrowed the gap at the 8:35 mark in the second period as Phillips converted on the power play off an assist by Miriam Drubel to make the score 2-1.

The Tigers had chances to extend the lead but went scoreless on back-to-back power play opportunities in the second period.  RIT did manage to get five shots on goal on the power play but Rando kept Colgate within striking distance.

In the closing moments of the second period, Jocelyn Simpson had a breakaway opportunity but Binnington made a great sliding pad save to ensure the Tigers would go into the second intermission with a one goal lead.

Phillips' second goal came at the 11:06 mark of the third period on a shot from the left wing. Binnington managed to get a piece of the shot, but it trickled past her to knot the score at 2. Neither team scored in the last nine minutes, as Colgate held a 9-7 lead in shots.

At the 1:20 mark in overtime, Taylor Craig took a checking penalty, giving the Tigers their fifth power play attempt. The Raiders were able to kill the penalty, and eight seconds later, Phillips found herself streaking in and beat Binnington for the winner.

Today's contest was a rematch of the game played in Hamilton, N.Y. on Nov. 9 where the Raiders pulled out a hard fought 2-1 victory on Taylor Volpe's third period goal.

The Tigers dropped to 13-4-1 against Colgate all-time and are winless in their last four contests against the Raiders. RIT's last win against Colgate came on Feb. 7, 1999, a 3-0 shutout win at Colgate.

RIT returns to action next Friday with game one of a weekend series with Sacred Heart at Ritter Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
