Whatcom County Public Works is seeking a Planner to join our Natural Resources team.  This temporary position has one-year of grant funding for up to 4 months of full-time with additional months at a maximum of 69 hours per month for the 2023 calendar year.    This position will primarily be involved with providing staff support for preservation, restoration, protection and enhancement of the County’s marine ecosystem including working closely with the Whatcom County Marine Resources Committee, community groups and other outside agencies.   

Duties will include some or all of the following:

Organizing, coordinating, and facilitating projects related to fresh and marine water resources.

Working with citizen’s groups and elected officials, including making public presentations.

Implementing data collection efforts, community outreach projects and restoration projects.

Conducting water quality monitoring, intertidal surveys, and plans community events.

Assisting with data entry and management tasks.  Assisting with summarizing data collection methods and results, implementation of restoration projects, and priority marine projects.

Reviewing reports, plans, studies and regulations related to water quality and marine resources and makes recommendations.

Promoting public awareness of water resources and best management practices.  Working as part of a team on projects and presentations.   Preparing background information and presentation materials.

Creating and distributing community outreach material.

Acting as a member of a team, group or appropriate review committee facilitating problem resolution. Notifying, coordinating, conferring, and maintaining professional liaison with appropriate agencies.

Assisting in developing and implementing programs.  Researching, collecting, developing, and analyzing diverse and moderately complex information and data.  Following established guidelines, justifying findings, identifying problems, and formulating recommendations anticipating possible ramifications and appropriately communicating significance of findings. Preparing complete reports on time with supporting conclusions and recommendations.

Recording information and data accurately following established procedures. Tracking activity, developing individualized plans and submitting documentation on time.   Researching, retrieving, updating, monitoring and analyzing information and data. Maintaining accurate, organized, and up-to-date records, databases, systems and files. Modifying systems and troubleshoots routine problems as needed.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in biology or ecology; marine or freshwater studies; environmental sciences, studies or policy; geology; geography; hydrology; forestry; planning; public administration or a related field AND one year of professional experience in natural resource management.

Knowledge of ecological systems similar to Whatcom County is preferred.
