HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's basketball team
put three into double figures on the offensive end and put together another
strong defensive effort, sending the Sycamores to a 58-41 victory over the
Creighton Bluejays inside Hulman Center on Friday night.
The victory improves Indiana State to 13-8 on the season and an even 5-5 in the
Missouri Valley Conference, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the
Bluejays. Before Friday, ISU's last win over Creighton was at home on Jan. 3,
2009. Creighton (16-5, 8-2 MVC) was held to their lowest scoring output since a
40-35 victory over Liberty to open the 2010-11 season.
ISU and CU battled back-and-forth over the opening 10 minutes of action, as the
Bluejays held a 12-10 lead with 10:10 left in the first half following
back-to-back three-pointers from Jordan Garrison and Marissa Janning. Indiana
State's defense took control of the game after Janning's trey, holding the
Bluejays without a field goal over the remaining 10 minutes of the half as the
Sycamores closed the period on an 18-2 run to take a 28-14 lead at the break.
Freshman Marina Laramie led the way in the first half, totaling eight points
and nine rebounds. Sophomore Racheal Mahan also added eight points in the first
half, as the team shot 11-for-33 (33.3%) from the field and out-rebounded CU by
a 27-16 margin. Creighton went 4-for-26 (15.4%) from the field in the first
half and 2-for-14 (14.3%) from beyond the three-point arc.
Indiana State answered every Creighton push in the second half, as the Bluejays
were never able to get closer than 10 points over the second 20 minutes of play.
The Sycamores took their largest lead of the game on a layup by junior Anna
Munn with 17:57 remaining, capping a 6-0 run and putting ISU in front 34-16.
Creighton entered Friday's game as the national leader in three-pointers,
averaging 9.6 treys per game, but Indiana State's defense held the Bluejays to
5-for-27 (18.5%) shooting for the game from beyond the arc.
Laramie posted her first career double-double on Friday, finishing with 10
points and 14 rebounds. Mahan (14 points) and senior Taylor Whitley (14 points)
tied for the team-lead in scoring, as Whitley inched closer to 1,000 points for
her career, finishing the night at 995. Janning led all scorers with 15 points
for the Bluejays.
Indiana State improved to 11-1 on the season when winning on the boards,
out-rebounding Creighton by a 48-37 margin. ISU is also 35-7 under third-year
head coach Teri Moren when allowing 61 points or fewer.
The Sycamores return to Hulman Center on Sunday afternoon for their Pink Game
to raise funds for breast cancer research, hosting Drake at 2:05 p.m. Drake
(7-14, 2-8 MVC) fell 81-57 at Illinois State on Friday.
