One Common Unity: Healing in a Time of Crisis

This interactive course will teach authentic communication practices and provide an important space for personal transformation and solutions to violence while supporting us to inspire healing in our own communities. Led by writer, producer and founder of the non-profit One Common Unity, Hawah Kasat and speaker, writer, educator, and master facilitator, Minista Jazz.

By having the courage to bring awareness to our ‘hidden’ stereotypes, prejudices and the -isms we live with every day that breeds a culture of violence, we create an opportunity to transcend that reality by engaging in  a safe space to have difficult conversations. This communication leads to healing and peace.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Have you been moved or shaken by the recent gun-violence, police brutality and race relations in the U.S.? Do you want to be a part of a diverse group of learners and thinkers around solutions that work? 

We are looking for students who are searching for solutions. Are interested in learning about what things they can do on a daily basis to shift the culture of violence we live in? Then we are here for you!


IN THIS COURSE YOU WILL:

  • Identify some of your own personal biases/ implicit prejudice
  • Have greater empathy and understanding for people who with different  racial, political, economic, sexual, or religious affiliations than your own
  • Know you are a part of a community that also desires solutions that are tangible and real
  • Learn new “actions” and ways to move through the world that allows space for greater understanding of collective consciousness, cultural bias and your role in making a different choice one moment at a time
  • Learn ways to have healthy conversations and begin authentic dialogue with people of different cultures, backgrounds, and views
  • Have a firm understanding of economic justice, institutionalized racism, and intergenerational violence and feel empowered to do something about it

WHAT WILL YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS COURSE LOOK LIKE?

Week One: Healing, race and compassion

  • Understanding the landscape of a nation... our past & present
  • Let's Dissect our hearts, mend our minds, and stitch tight the threads that bind us as human beings
  • Discovering our Humanity
  • What does it mean to truly listen, to have compassion and dissolve the "other"

Week Two: Digging into our implicit bias 

  • Defining implicit bias and identifying our own. 
  • The Dangerous Blanket. All, Never, Always in language
  • Beginning to re-learn and re-think our own minds. Breaking the cycle/ interrupting patterns of behavior
  • Pause for the Cause

Week Three: A new conversation

  • Practicing new dialogue/conversation
  • How to engage in a conversation with someone with different views
  • Being an ally to someone that is facing discrimination or being marginalized...
  • The difficult position of walking the fence (privilege in America)

Week Four: Health Patterns and Healthy Behaviors

  • Moving past guilt, shame, and blame  
  • Finding ways way to get involved
  • Community engagement and accountability
  • Staying positive in the midst of trauma

Hawah Kasat

HawaH is an author, yogi, non-profit leader, and social entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and executive director of One Common Unity, a non-profit organization that inspires a culture of non-violence through music and arts. In the past, he has served as youth representative to the U.N. World Conference Against Racism and as Director of Peaceable Schools at the largest public high school in Washington, DC. HawaH has been interviewed for his innovative approaches to peace building by multiple media sites, including CNN, BBC, Al-Jazeera, and XM National Satellite radio. He has authored 4 books, produced 3 documentary films, 2 musical CDs, and is the creator/ editor of  book anthology that features Grammy award winning musicians and master teachers. His latest collaborative documentary film project,  has received wide acclaim, awards, and toured 13 international film festivals.
