Year 5 and 6 Welsh Product Challenge

This term Year 5 and 6 have been learning about the Victorians, with lots of initial research and fact finding about the era undertaken in the first few weeks. Leading on from their findings and in-depth knowledge, the children developed their own end of topic challenge to invent a Welsh themed product to sell, with all profits going to selected charities.

The children set off by generating product ideas in groups before narrowing them down to two or three. They then had pitch their business plans to the ‘Ysgol Cwm Brombil Boardroom’, where a team of senior staff including the head teacher, Mr Clarke, had to decide if their ideas where worth the £5 investment to kick start their projects. With all groups excelling in the process, everyone managed to secure the investment. The market opened with masses of primary phase children eager to see what Welsh products were on sale with a wide range of stationary, food and drinks available. During the market there was a fantastic atmosphere with lots of smiling faces!

Reviewing the day, a grand total of £345.89 was raised with the children of Year 5 and 6 deciding to split this between two charities, Cancer Research and Farms for City Children - Treginnis Farm. It is fair to say all children went above and beyond to achieve the challenge set out. Da iawn Year 5 and 6!

Literacy Trip to the Hay Festival

Some of our champion readers in Year 9 were lucky enough to visit the Hay Festival on the last day of term. The pupils met authors, Sarah Crossan and Holly Bourne and took part in workshops with them. One author actually named the character of her next book after one of our lucky pupils! A fascinating talk off actress and comedienne Mae Martin was experienced and some pupils took part in a fun workshop entitled ‘I’m a journalist get me out of here!’ where they looked at fake and real news. A wonderful experience was had by staff and pupils!

Pupils Innovate Sustainable Products

Emma-Anne Tinsley has been selected to be put forward for the Student Innovation Awards for Wales with her solar powered 3D printed phone charger. Emma has designed and developed her phone charger as part of her GCSE Product Design course this year. Designs have been developed using Autodesk 2019 and printed in house in the new Product Design rooms in Ysgol Cwm Brombil using an UPBOX+ 3D printer using ABS. Work completed is of the highest standard and Emma has managed to design and make a high quality cutting edge product.

Newyddion Cymraeg!

Da iawn to Izzy Williams in Year 8 and the Year 7 recital group who competed at the Urdd National Eisteddfod last week.

Pupils at the International Club are preparing to host pupils from Belarus, China and Spain over the coming months. 10 children from the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity will visit the school on the 28th June along with their teachers to learn what it’s like to attend a school in Wales. It is also an opportunity to thank pupils and staff at the school personally for their kind contribution that was sent by lorry to their orphanage school last October!

In July over 70 Chinese students will arrive in Wales and attend our school for a week. Pupils will be integrated into classes and follow a normal timetable. This gives them the opportunity to practice their English language skills and gives them a once in a lifetime experience. A similar programme will take place in September with a group of Spanish students.

The club will also be holding a Bangladesh Awareness Day for the primary phase as well as linking with a school in Bangladesh. Exciting times ahead!

Another medal added to her collection from the weekend with some gutsy performances throughout the day which led to her to getting a Silver Medal. Lauren Dougan has also achieved a place in the Severn Stars Clifton Squad for the battle of the Nova Academies. Well done to both girls!

Well done to Gracie Hurley from Year 7 who won the Conso Draw in 12U tennis Europe VILLAS cup in Spain. This in one of her many achievements this year. We look forward to hearing about your future successes.

Katie Megan Davies has secured a place in Hartpury College to continue with her sporting development and progress further in her academic studies. We are very proud of you and how you have stepped out of your comfort zone to do this. Year 11 Pupil, Emma Tinsley, played a big part if the Ospreys under 18 Championship winning ladies team and was also nominated for Player of the Season at the end of season awards night, which is a massive achievement with her being one of the youngest squad members. Year 10 pupil, Cori Lewis Jenkins, been offered a place in Ospreys Academy training squad with, Year 11 Pupil Jack Goodridge, being asked to train with the Ospreys Under 18s summer squad. Congratulations all!

On the 2nd May, Aberavon Schools Under 15 played Neath Schools in the Lawrence Miller Bowl final at the Principality Stadium. The team consisted of many pupils from Year 10 and other Year 10 pupils from neighbouring schools. Although the result didn't go Aberavon Schools way, it was a fantastic day and experience for all the children involved. Well done to everyone involved.
