One Suspect Dead, One on the Loose

Note:  I concluded here and started new live-blog at 2:45 p.m. ET.

UPDATE #14   Amazing presser with combative aunt of suspects, a lawyer, in Toronto, too much to summarize.  Says two suspects have two sisters.  Older brother never "devout" Muslim, though more so in recent years.  He may have gone to Russia last year on family matters only.   She seems to suggest the two "set up" by others with stronger beliefs.   Anderson Cooper comes on to say she "must be in a state of denial."

UPDATE #13  Suspect #2's Twitter feed seems to be @J_tsar.   Friends he tweeted to recently to attest to this, expressing shock now.  Most tweets typical college student stuff--loves "Breaking Bad" and Dave Chappelle--although from April 8:   "If you have the knowledge and the inspiration all that's left is to take action." March 24:  "you will have to make tough decisions today and those decisions will influence your future." March 21:  "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."  March 10:  "Never underestimate the rebel with a cause."

January 29:  "I got these bros that I'd take a bullet for, in the leg or the shoulder or something nothing fatal tho."  January 19:  "To be honest, I don't care for those people that wanna commit suicide, your life b, do what you think will make you happy." January 16:  "I don't argue with fools who say islam is terrorism, it's not worth a thing, let an idiot remain an idiot."

UPDATE #12  Salt Lake Tribune found photo of dead suspect boxing in city in 2009--and, surprise, was preparing for this year's Golden Gloves, also in that city.

Pete Williams says report of accomplice heading for NY and train stopped led to nothing.

UPDATE #11  Presser just started  12:30 p.m. ET.   Gov. Patrick asks folks to "remain indoors."  Ongoing probe.  Will not be taking questions.  Mayor of Boston thanks also.  Looks like nothing new coming.  "Be patient."  State police spokesman: "progressing through neighborhood.Sixty-seventy percent finished. Despite rumors, "no apprehension."   Will be "controlled explosion" this afternoon.

Most TV coverage for past two hours have suggested, or even stated, that suspect #2 was "surrounded" in house and "negotiating."  Apparently not true, although possibly true but not "apprehended."

UPDATE #10:  NBC says dead suspect flew to Russia for 6 months last year.  But could have just been visiting father--not getting "training."    Friends going on twitter and saying, "Dude, turn yourself in."

Now getting reports from friends at living suspect's UMass campus, who say not political guy, shocked etc.  CNN just now with two guys.  Common theme from so many all day:  No one knew he had a brother.  Nice guy, very Americanized.  Volunteered to help kids with Down's Syndrome.  Hung out with kids from all countries.   Said he was from Chechnya.

UPDATE #9  CNN site on suspect #2 recent tweets: "His tweets included one at 1:43 a.m. Wednesday that said, 'I'm a stress free kind of guy.'  On Monday at 8:04 p.m. -- hours after the bombings -- he tweeted a quote from rapper Jay-Z, 'Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people.'  On Tuesday shortly after midnight he tweeted, 'There are people that know the truth but stay silent & there are people that speak the truth but we don't hear them cuz they're the minority.'"

UPDATE #8  Suspects' uncle in Maryland  just now live:  Never heard them talk about terrorism.  They are simply "losers."  Hatred of those who did fit in would be motive.  No hatred of America.  Basing it on being Muslim "garbage."  But he hasn't seen them in years.  Asks nephew to turn himself in ask for forgiveness.  Says he has put "shame" on Chechen community.  BTW, suspect still alive  did not really seem like classic "loser."

Speaking of shame, Richard Engel on NBC just said uncle could be sincerely agnry or maybe just expressing "fake outrage."

UPDATE #7  Clear that two suspects not exactly well-financed.  Had to hold up 7-11--and now we learn that they also took $800 from ATM with card of guy who's SUV they hijacked.  Also their bungling overall suggests not well-oiled plot.

Mother Jones with photo of suspect #2 as high school wrestler and more reflections by friends.

CNN report from abroad seems to conclude brothers probably had no contacts abroad.  Also, older brother said to compete in Golden Gloves tourney a few years ago. ... On Twitter, former Wash Post national security reporter Bart Gellman hits lockdown of all of Boston (since no "pocket nuke" involved) as a win for terrorism.

UPDATE #6  Police alert for grey Honda CRV but don't know which suspect.   No updates from Watertown  scene.  TV ordered far away.

UPDATE #5:   MSNBC just now claiming, still, that White Hat Guy surrounded in house in "stand off."  But who knows.  Certainly no changes at that scene.

NBC reports "associate" of suspects on train to NY--train now halted in East Norwalk, CT.  Then quickly adds:  Train given all-clear and on its way again.  But others say still halted.

UPDATE #4  Mother Jones claims it has found YouTube page for dead suspect, and he posted  "a video extolling an extremist religious prophecy associated with Al Qaeda."

Mother of suspects arrested in 2012?  Home address lines up.

Longtime TV reporter and host Robin Young who long lives in Boston: "remember djohar well, beautiful boy in tux at prom party and elsewhere."  More on him as honors student, athlete, well-liked.

NYT:  "A Facebook page for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev shows a profile photo of a young man in a military helmet, holding what appears to be an assault weapon and taking a drag on a cigarette. An announcement from the city of Cambridge, Mass., listed a person by that name as a recipient of a $2,500 college scholarship in 2011, one of about 35 scholarships given to local high school graduates."

Dead suspect's revealing Amazon wish list. (Note: NOT confirmed.)  Also, his  hopes to become Olympics boxer for USA.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) - Father of Boston bombing suspect says son is accomplished medical student and 'a true angel.'"

UPDATE #3   Online profile for suspect on loose.  Logged in last at 6:04 last night!  Claims he mainly care about "career and money."   Worldview: "Islam."  CNN says his request in the "send a gift" section was for TNT and police cars....

Cable live now with major activity in Watertown,  small explosion and smoke in air.   MSNBC:  police "have location" of suspect, so that may be it.

AJE with livestream of police and SWAT team near surrounded house.  One report that a explosion was in house, but could have been controlled blast.

MSNBC's Pete Williams:  a third suspect taken into custody.  But other reports say "protecive custody."

UPDATE #2:   Guy, Eric Machado,  interviewed on CNN said they went to high school together in Cambridge.   Partied with him.  Not bad guy.  All who knew him in shock now, no "malicious" signs.  Some followed him on Twitter and he followed back.   Claims suspect had worked as lifeguard at Harvard.  Attending U Mass-Amherst and on break now.  Pronounces name "Jahar."  Did not know older brother. ...

UPDATE #1: WBZ reporter talks to uncle of Suspect #1.  Calls him "loser" and deserved to die...Brothers announced in hijackng SUV that they were the bombers....

Press conference:   Gov. Patrick and police in Watetown says all transit suspended.  All told to stay indoor and lock doors--for ALL of Boston and certain suburbs.  "Shelter in place." Police say getting tips but may take hours.  Brother still on loose and in car.  Biggest lockdown in history, it is suggested.

Earlier:  Awoke, turned on TV,  and just saw Pete Williams report  that two suspects in Boston bombings are brothers from  near if not in Chechnya (one born in Russia, one in Kurdistan), who have been in country for ten years.  Latest from NYT.  Suspect number one  shot dead in Watertown, MA., while other got away--in fact, in hijacked SUV, drove over dead brother on way out and huge manhunt underway.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, dead.   Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, alive (wanted flyer at left).
Brothers had gone to rob 7-11, leading to death of that MIT police guard.  Then they drove away, apparently throwing explosives out the window.   Had been in country for ten years. Allegedly "failed to assimilate."   CNN: "They are Muslim."  Speculation that not part of wider plot because no help in escape, seemingly hapless after doing bombing. CNN:  Brother killed found with explosives on him.  Not certain if police shot and killed him, or he blew himself up, or even was hit by car and died.  Dead brother had posted on Facebook that he did not have single American friend.

The Boston Philharmonic (not to be confused with the Boston Symphony Orchestra) has just announced on its website that the performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony scheduled for tonight (Friday) has been postponed until October. The members of the orchestra live in communities spread all over Metro Boston and can't get into the city. So this will be the SECOND concert devoted to the music of LvB to be cancelled or postponed this week (the Boston Symphony Orchestra had planned to present a makeup concert for one snowed out weeks earlier and consisting of the "Empere" Concerto and Fifth Symphony.) The Boston Philharmonic is a pro-am orchestra, and many members may be at work in law enforcement and medical care also.
