The Leftover Club

Rate this book
In 1986, Roni Lawless wasn't like most of her schoolmates. She was too smart, too awkward, and too different to fit into any specific clique. The only commonality she happened to share with her thinner, more popular counterparts was that she, too, had a massive crush on Dylan Fenn, the most popular kid in school.

Even though their mothers were great friends and shared a house, Roni was stuck in the Friend Zone, unable to win his interest like many of the girls he dated and discarded throughout high school. Instead she had to find solace with the other outcasts, all brought together by their unrequited crush. Together they formed The Leftover Club, a very exclusive group of teens who couldn't turn Dylan's head even if they spontaenously combusted.

Over the next 20 years, each member gets their shot at the dreamiest guy from their class. But who will ultimately win his heart in time for the 20th anniversary for the Class of '88?

Ginger Voight, author of the best selling "GROUPIE" and "FULLERTON FAMILY SAGA" series, weaves a new, standalone romance. It is a heartfelt and nostalgic look back at what it was like to come of age in the 80s, fall in and out of love in the 90s and ultimately come into one's own in the 21st Century. It is a love story for all ages, especially anyone who ever mooned over the one who got away.

Ginger Voight is a screenwriter and bestselling author with over twenty published titles in fiction and nonfiction. She covers everything from travel to politics in nonfiction, as well as romance, paranormal, and dark, “ripped from the headlines” topics like Dirty Little Secrets.

Ginger discovered her love for writing in sixth grade, courtesy of a Halloween assignment. From then on, writing became a place of solace, reflection, and security. This was never more true than when she found herself homeless in L.A. at the age of nineteen. There, she wrote her first novel, longhand on notebook paper, while living out of her car.

In 1995, after she lost her nine-day-old son, she worked through her grief by writing the story that would eventually become The Fullerton Family Saga.

In 2011, she embarked on a new journey—to publish romance novels starring heroines who look more like the average American woman. These "Rubenesque" romances have developed a following thanks to her bestselling Groupie series. Other titles, such as the highly-rated New Adult series, Fierce, tap into the "reality-TV" preoccupation in American entertainment, which gives her contemporary stories a current, pop culture edge.

Known for writing gut-twisting angst, Ginger isn’t afraid to push the envelope with characters who are perfectly imperfect. Whether rich, poor, sweet, selfish, gay, straight, plus-size or svelte, her characters are beautifully flawed and three-dimensional. They populate her lavish fictional landscapes and teach us more about the real world in which we live simply through their interactions with each other. Ginger’s goal with every book is to give the reader a little bit more than they were expecting, told through stories they'll never forget.

Here's the gist. An insecure and overweight Roni has been in love with Dylan for nearly her entire life. But besides cohabiting, (due to a set up created by their moms) Roni and Dylan travel in different social circles. Dylan is a popular playboy who's easy on the eyes, where Roni is a wallflower, lurking in the shadows. The two are friends, but that's as much as it will ever be, or so Roni thinks. As a teen, she creates The Leftover Club with other nerdy friends who worship Dylan from afar.

With a title like The Leftover Club it's safe to assume the book is going to be about the club itself, or perhaps getting revenge on the popular Dylan. But it's not really a story about that. Sure, the other leftovers are introduced and serve as weak support to move the story line along, but overall this is the story of the relationship between Roni and Dylan over the years.

Without giving too much away, I just didn't find the story to be all that believable. It was almost as if they didn't know what they wanted these characters to be. Was Roni really a nerdy or homely as she thought if two of her closest friends happened to be the most popular boys in school? And was Dylan really such a cad when it was clear he was a good friend to Roni for nearly her entire life? The whole thing just seemed so contrived. I couldn't decide what was more unbelievable, the fact that they could be apart, or the fact that they would get together in the first place.

Not gonna lie, I was suckered in by the nostalgic 80's reference and promises of unrequited love when I decided to read this book. I chose to ignore the romance label, as that can be a genre painted with broad strokes. But true to form, this was a traditional romance with a touch of the erotic and honestly, this just wasn't my cup of tea.

I definitely loved reading this unputdownable book throughout the entire story. I was hooked with it not just because of the crispy plot but the portrayal of the story was quite attracting to me as a reader. It was a satisfying read. Much recommendable.

I have not felt the need to write a review for a book in a great deal of time. Honestly I've been in a slump, reading crappy books with predictable story lines and characters that the author has recycled (Kristen Ashley). I can honestly say Ginger Voight is my go to author, her story lines and characters grab you from the beginning and don't let go. The emotion you feel for the characters and their personal struggles are real and as a reader you feel them deeply. There are no cliffhangers or kidnappings just real people living through the struggle and insecurities of life.

If you are looking for a good book read Ginger Voight, especially the Groupie Trilogy and the Fullerton Saga. You will not be disappointed.

The premise of The Leftover Club had me sold.  I'm grew up and graduated high school in the 80's and I couldn't wait to be transported back in time.  Ginger Voight hits it spot on.  I almost had to pull out my Jordache jeans and drape myself in neon and lace fingerless gloves.  If only hubby would wear those parachute pants once again!  But I digress.  This is a story of unrequited love and a group of social misfits that stay true to each other years after graduating high school.

I've been sitting on this review for a few days.  I wanted to see if my feelings would change.  A lot of times when a story has that initial emotional impact my brain won't let me wait.  I have to get all those thoughts out of my head right away.  But with The Leftover Club, I didn't know I felt.  I liked the story, the characters, the writing.  I liked how the chapters switched between years so we could get glimpses of growth and connect some of the dots between the main character Roni and her childhood crush, Dylan, as well as the impact her friends had on her life growing up.  I really appreciated being able to connect to the emotions Roni had in high school.  The feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, the social stigma of being different, and the effect that high school has on all of us.  I thought she nailed it.  I couldn't commiserate on many levels.  I really connected with Roni in those chapters.

I didn't however, connect so much with the now chapters.  The current Roni didn't really match up.  I was confused by the lack of maturity in her outlook on life.  When it came to her broken marriage and the fall out of being a single parent with a not so nice ex, I applauded Roni's outlook.   However, her in ability to see herself as an abused wife had me befuddled.  It was never addressed that current insecurities were a direct result of the relationship between herself and her ex.  It was just written off as an okay thing because this is how she felt in high school anyway so it all made sense in her head.  I really wanted the author to explore that more.  Delve deep and force Roni to seek happiness on her own before chasing that dream of her high school crush.

Dylan's character was very intriguing to me.  His childhood was not idyllic in that he desperately wanted/needed the love of his absent father.  The absence of a father figure left him feeling inadequate to have meaningful relationships.  He learned very early that money can't buy love.  So to see him struggle with real emotions was great.  Like I'm sure many people do he chose to punish himself by denying what he really wanted.  Instead choosing the path of least resistance.

So we have these two flawed characters that see each other an unattainable.  Both struggling with internal demons and insecurities.  As an adult these images of each other continue, however, I didn't feel the connection between them as I did when they were younger.  I almost felt like they regressed as adults, thrown back into those teenage years and it was hard to understand why these two adults in their late 30's were acting out and behaving like kids.  I think I would have preferred more chapters with them coming together in the now making real connections between mind, body, and soul.

This is still an overall fun read.  I really enjoyed the banter between the members of the The Leftover Club as well as the interactions between Roni and her daughter.  I could definitely feel her pain in raising a teenager.  I love Ginger Voight's writing, she has an amazing voice for story telling, it's always consistent.  My issues with the story still make it a 3.5-4 star read.

MY THOUGHTS~

I wasn’t real sure about this book going into it, but I was hooked immediately! I could not put it down! I read through soccer practices, ordered pizza instead of cooking, and stayed up way too late reading until I fell asleep with my Kindle in my hand! Then, I got up bright and early and finished this bad boy! I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK!
Ginger Voight is one of my all-time favorite authors. She is amazing! I don’t believe that she is even capable of writing a bad book or a DNF. I could read her words all the time and never get bored. I mean seriously, who else could use the word “prophylactic” in a sex scene and it still be hot?? ONLY Ginger Voight!
The characters in The Leftover Club are very well developed and very layered. Their lives, trials, triumphs, mistakes, and relationships are so realistic. If this book wasn’t absolutely a complete story, I would be BEGGING for a sequel, but it is totally complete and there is nothing to add that could make it any better.
My only semi-complaint is that I got a bit confused throughout with the dates and time line jumping around as it did. That could have just been me not paying close enough attention to the dates or not remembering the dates throughout the chapter though. That little issue of mine wasn’t enough to dock my rating in any way though.
I can’t wait for more from Ginger Voight’s imagination!

3.5* - I read this book in one sitting until 3am! I haven't done that in a while and i think the latte i had at 7pm might be part of the reason but i also really needed to know the end -
The story is over a 30 years period and it keeps going back, i did read the jumps back quicker than the present because it annoys me when it keeps going back and forth but to be fair to the writer it did make sense to do it this way and whether i like that method or not she did it well -
A lot happens over 30 years between the 2 mains characters and i was coming to 12 mins left in the book when i realised it was either going to have a part 2 or end quickly - it was the latter and that was odd, the whole book goes over so much of what the main character thinks, feels, struggles with and then bang in the last page all is wrapped up - that annoyed me more than the back and forth between the present and future I would have liked for that bit to last at least an extra page and then get an epilogue -
Still i cried, laughed and got well mad so it pretty much covered all the feeling i like to go over when i read a book :)

A good story but there was too many flashbacks, many of which were unnecessary and didn't add to the story. I liked them until about 65 percent but after that they got old and I just wanted to hear about the budding relationship.
