KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - A breakaway tap-in goal by junior Alexis Heffernan put an exclamation point on a Truman women's soccer comeback Tuesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs rallied from one down to earn a 2-1 overtime victory against Lindenwood (Mo.) at the Bulldog Soccer Park.
 
The Bulldogs (4-1) came out with all cylinders firing, out-shooting the Lions (1-2-1) 16-4 in the first 45 minutes. However, the inability to put a tally on the scoreboard cost Truman early in the second half, when LWU substitute Alexis Robbers finished a through ball from Taylor Wade for a 1-0 Lion lead in the 50th minute.
 
Truman would continue to pressure the LWU back line, with Megan Whitehead providing the tying goal on a blast from near the right baseline past keeper Lauren Groathouse in the 81st minute to knot the match at 1-1. Lauren Seawright was credited with the assist after her pass sent Whitehead down the right touch line.
 
In OT, the Bulldogs had a pair of early chances, but it was the third shot of the period that served as the dagger. As the ball skipped along the LWU back line, a ricochet freed up Heffernan all alone behind every Lion player – giving the reigning NSCAA Div. II Player of the Week a free path to dribble the game-winner across the end line. The goal marked the junior's fifth of the season.
 
For the match, the Bulldogs out-shot LWU 23-7 (9-5 on goal) and took four corner kicks to the Lions' one. Heffernan's eight shots led all players, while Sara Bommarito added five, and Megan Frkovic took four shots. Nicole Sparks earned win No. 4 between the pipes this season, posting four saves in 96-plus minutes of work.
 
The Bulldogs return to action this Friday evening on the McKendree University campus in Lebanon, Ill. Kickoff against the host Bearcats is set for 5 p.m.
